Found this at the beach today. What is it? by welshkid13in pics

[–]Sekenre 0 points1 point ago

it's called a sea mouse. They are burrowers, so usually come to the surface after a storm. Found a bunch of them and their eggs on portobello beach in edinburgh last week.

Suddenly, I just can't take it anymore. How do I deal with that? by throwawaytiredmommyin Parenting

What really helped my wife was going back to work at 6 months. Granny looks after the baby 2 days a week and I get Saturdays. Most of the time her job is pretty low stress and she had an evening a week to do a clay-modelling class. (Me again)

Once the wee one got used to just being with me and granny, she became a lot less dependent on mama.

Another thing is, get out of the house and go somewhere pretty where you can just sit on the grass and play with daisies with her. (we have a botanical gardens within easy bus distance) This will distract you from all the homemaking crap.

EDIT: Also: chores? husband. getting fit? bouncing 7 months old is exercise. blocs? what are blocs? tummy time? Our kid hated it so we stopped. Reading? We all like reading together, but when we can't be arsed, Shaolin Soccer was wonderful. Signing? If she really wants you to know something, she'll find a way.

Kids are naturally geniuses, we just have to not get in the way too much and point out the cool stuff and steer them away from the sharp things.

I guess I'm saying just relax. She can't help but be happy with a mother so interesting as to be on reddit.

UPDATE: becoming a parent has ruined my life. by throw_away_dadin Parenting

Really appreciate the update, well done for hanging in there.

It restores my faith in humanity to see a positive update.

EDIT: My own 2.5 year old is enjoying potty training. I can't tell you what a relief that was.

What will happen if oil gets scarce? Will farmers go back to using horses or oxen? Is there a book on this? by nsfwdreamerin energy

Good point, I would however like to see an example of an energy source more readily available than crude oil. Or an example of extracting oil using less energy.

[–]Sekenre 3 points4 points ago

A big addition to your bottom line is that as oil becomes harder to extract, you have to spend more energy to get the same return.

That's not to say that any doomsayers are right, just that "technology will save us" is a myth. Because technology is just another way of saying "we found a new way to apply more energy to the problem"

I don't have references for this, but most farm animals require about 30% of your cropland for their own food. However they provide manure so it makes nutrient cycling a lot easier.

For example see: John Seymour's Book Where he goes on about how awesome cows are just for the manure they provide.

I was reading in David Blume's Alcohol can be a gas That you can use only 10% of your land to produce the Ethanol needed to farm it. However i don't know if this has been studied in practice.

Both methods are more labour intensive, since animals need care and making your own moonshine almost requires learning a new career. This will require raising farm wages to entice people out of the cities (or desperate people) and will not favour megafarms as they are far more dependent on capital-intensive methods.

Hadn't heard of grml before, looks neat. Knoppix is too big.

Mostly it's a learning exercise for me, plus the archiso tools are awesome, and I really don't want X on my bootdisks.

I'm also a big fan of the clonezilla bootdisk.

Dirty little secret: the loo that saves lives in Liberia by ninzeein TrueReddit

[–]Sekenre 2 points3 points ago

Because it carries diseases that are specifically harmful to other humans. It's like a feedback loop of deadly crap. Also, in most places, human waste goes into the water, animal waste gets composted or spread on the fields. If you had animals that were constantly drinking shit from the same species in their water, they would have much the same problem.

Most disease organisms do not survive the transition from one animal to another. Those that do are usually the really nasty ones.

I don't expect it to be popular enough to build up a good population of seeders.

Also, it should be available to people who are behind corporate firewalls that block bittorrent.

I wonder if the kind of mental and social changes required could be helped by turning the idea of "poo-poo" from waste into resource, then people would care where it went instead of "away".

3 1/2 months old HATES tummy time. Please help by maman_poulein Parenting

[–]Sekenre 0 points1 point ago

Our girl refused also. We did not worry, she used to lie on her back and do crunches for ages, we thought she was struggling to sit up, but no... she was just exercising.

She also loved to stand from a very young age. She learned to walk before learning to crawl over 6 months later, and she is only just starting to use crawling to get under things at 2 years old.

She's strong as an ox and we only worried a little bit about whether crawling was a 'neccessary' part of her development.
