EU Blocks France's Ban on Monsanto's GMO Maize by jjeremyharrelsonin worldpolitics

[–]SavannaJeff 0 points1 point ago

You really think pitting your voice against 500 million others to elect one 'leader' of the EU over what will probably be a single-issue vote is in any way democratic? Don't be fooled, only direct or 'liquid' democracy gives you any real voice - the EU is no more or less democratic than any of your national governments.

You think most 'democratic' states are really that democratic in the first place? I'd trust the EU over almost any one of the national governments in the EU

The point was about ignoring historical context.

Does taxation = theft? by DescendingLogicin PoliticalDiscussion

Furthermore, I'd like to direct anyone interested in further (more advanced) reading to look at Mancur Olson's "stationary bandit" theory that pretty much blows the libertarian argument out of the water.

As a result of dozens of generations of being treated like shit. I guess if you were in the US you'd be saying "niggers just rob shit all the time and are useless", ignoring any historical context for crime rates or the wealth disparity...

Had I only lived in Australia, I'd agree with you however I've spent the last few years in Sweden and I have not seen a single instance of this, where in Australia it was noticeable. Culture matters

I was raped this February. One of my professors (i assume) thought I was being hypothetical in an essay assignment. This is what I turned in for my final. He hasn't said a word to me since. I might've fucked myself over but this is the most honest thing I've written in my whole life. by aWritingThrowawayin TwoXChromosomes

This happened to me a few weeks ago. Still think about it often, and still have no idea what to do, and I certainly don't want to make it worse. We've barely spoken since. Don't know if that makes me a bad person or only human.

Hollande to press Merkel over German veto on eurobonds by ai565ai565in europe

[–]SavannaJeff 0 points1 point ago

Well, the calls for growth promoting measures have largely had at least some sway in endearing the southern population to more of a French leadership when it comes to tackling the crisis. There's actually concrete talk about something to improve their lot under Hollande, rather than merely 'be Spartan and claw your way through this and we'll be good again".

Hollande to press Merkel over German veto on eurobonds by ai565ai565in europe

[–]SavannaJeff 1 point2 points ago

Ah, my point was that there is already widespread resentment about the way Germany has been handling the greeks, meaning putting a more French face on the proposal is a necessity for it to be swallowed. That's why France, in this case, is equally as important as Germany and at the moment they hold equal levels of power (or it's even tipped slightly in France's favour I'd say).

Taxation trends in the European Union by krattrin europe

[–]SavannaJeff 3 points4 points ago

  1. Have you been reading some Mancur Olson? If so, then you'd know that the 'stationary bandit' also works to maximize revenues by maximizing wealth, and balancing the costs and benefits of a given public good to get the best return for themselves and the people being 'extorted' by the stationary bandit.

  2. Pretty sure this is covered under 1 and the public good thing.

Really, you seem to be a little bit of a naive anarchist.

A French vote is critical to any proposal the Germans make, and both parties know it.

Weird? Yes, in that most people do want that kind of feeling. Bad? No, it's just you. By asking the question however, theres a chance you do actually feel these feelings, you just repress them.

EDIT

Aaaaand... 5 minutes after I email them, I get an 'order dispatched' email.

The Secret World: Impressions From Beta Weekend by belghastin TheSecretWorld

[–]SavannaJeff 1 point2 points ago

Tried it. I thought the cutscenes and the story were great, and rather in humourous in places that I didn't expect it (for example the deputy on the roof with his daddy issues). Combat was a tad boring, but it's early days in the life of this MMO. It was months after WoW was released that they started getting it into a really good rhythm. Skill wheel is still confusing (and I'm not even sure if you're able to save custom decks? I didn't see that option anywhere)

Overall though, I can certainly see this being a fun and interesting game, though in truth I could only see it being a masterpiece as a single player game.
