We criticize DRM but can the PC gaming industry really survive without it? by maxwoodin truegaming

How do you tell a pirated copy of the DRM version from a pirated copy of the version without DRM?

We criticize DRM but can the PC gaming industry really survive without it? by maxwoodin truegaming

I don't understand what you mean. Are you saying that people are using pirated copies of the game that still require them to be online while playing?

So you hate girls who say "lol"? Because that is the only thing this post has in common with the one you described.

Types of outlet plugs used around the world [1011x766] by karpify2in MapPorn

[–]SGMidence 2 points3 points ago

I added up the population figures for all of the visible dark blue countries on this map (excluding the UK and the PRC but including Hong Kong): you share that plug design with 469,621,662 people around the world - over seven and a half times the population of the United Kingdom. You've got plenty of company.

I don't think cultural exchange is much of a barrier to conflict. Before the war and even now, a large percentage of the U.S. population was and is of German descent. The Japanese were more foreign to the average American, but far from unknown - after all, there were plenty of Japanese Americans, too. Furthermore, think of all the civil wars between people of the same culture, but with a few key ideological differences. Sometimes it's even just a fight over resources.

ELI5: Why don't we have electric run cars? by zaikerin explainlikeimfive

[–]SGMidence 0 points1 point ago

There's actually a sequel to that movie that came out last year: Revenge of the Electric Car. It "features the birth of a new generation of electric cars including the Chevrolet Volt, the Nissan Leaf and the Tesla Roadster", all of which are on the market right now. I've even seen TV commercials for the Chevy Volt.

Live TV is losing traction, forcing advertisers to buy more time by menevetsin cordcutters

[–]SGMidence 1 point2 points ago

Look, I get it: ads are generally a nuisance. But what is the alternative? People are always throwing Netflix out as an example of "the right way to do it", but the problem is that virtually all of the television content on Netflix was at some point subsidized through advertising (excluding BBC series and any other government-subsidized content, I suppose). Netflix has produced only a single series on their own, and obviously they could not afford to produce anything close to the vast library of programs they offer through their streaming service. So if not through commercial breaks, how would you propose that TV series be funded?

Work Is Work: Why Free Internships Are Immoral by ElBehin TrueReddit

[–]SGMidence 5 points6 points ago

Isn't that basically a reiteration of the point he was making - that unpaid internships usually go to people who already have the means to support themselves, and thus can act as a barrier to advancement for poorer people?

What hard truth does Reddit need to hear? by TheJungleVIPin AskReddit

You realize that both of those examples exist, right? Black people are just like any other racial group: they're not all the same. Do you really think the family in that picture just posed like that, then went back to throwing chairs?

The vast majority of black people are not Turk from Scrubs

What are you implying here?

Eh, poor spelling and grammar are hardly the scourge of this website. The dominance of easily-digestible content (e.g., memes and other ostensibly funny images) is much more of a problem, as it so quickly takes over subreddits that don't have rules against it.

[–]SGMidence 6 points7 points ago

You're misconstruing what he said. He said that the U.S. government is not "the shittiest government ever" because in many countries the government actually forbids such criticism, while the U.S. does not. Re-read his actual words: they don't contain any of what you're railing against.

You make a very good point. There was discussion in the thread about the benefits of a single global language, but I agree that a multitude of global languages is far more likely in the foreseeable future.

Most of the relevant discussion seemed to branch from the comment I linked, but I also found this comment by Gaijinloco to be an excellent treatment of the issues.
