Is it bad when an interviewer tells you they are interviewing more candidates and they will contact you after the interviews are completed? by offwiththepantsin jobs

[–]Rice_Daddy 0 points1 point ago

As someone who was recently told that I was going to second interview, only to be told later that I got knocked out by candidates they interviewed after me, absolutely not.

The worst part about this is that I did really well during the interview, and they based their decision partially on something really trivial (or at least so I was told), when in fact I think they just got people who had more experience, even though it's an entry level position where experience was not required.

Floating a theory on job Interview - Don't be the first/early by soAsianin jobs

[–]Rice_Daddy 1 point2 points ago

Not terribly relevant, but I have an anecdotal account in support for your 'theory'.

I regularly compete in martial arts, and in forms/patterns competition, going first is always a massive disadvantage, unless you're absolutely awesome.

I was in a competition where I was given the lowest score out of everyone, except the ones who forgot their pattern half way through, and I can say with absolute certainty that whilst my performance was not medal worthy, it was clearly better than some of the competitors, and I attribute the result mostly to having gone first.

my dad always bashes taekwondo during family gatherings. it's starting to piss me off. by ch_bu13in taekwondo

[–]Rice_Daddy 2 points3 points ago

Not so much just ignore him, but just let him know that he's not a credible source of martial arts related knowledge, every time he starts bringing it up.

Maybe throw some 'jokes' back, say him talking about martial arts as a non-practitioner is like watching a child trying to speak to adults.

EDIT for tips: be sure to milk it, really make it patronizing for him, throw in some 'awws' and 'watch him babble!'. Look amused when he try to discredit you, the trick is to piss him off more than this piss you off, that way he will be less likely to bring it up in the future.

[–]Rice_Daddy 1 point2 points ago

What the hell, I can see why he might do this in favour of MMA, MT, or BJJ, but Aikido and Kung Fu?? Really?

I would suggest not to bother arguing with him, just take this opportunity for family banter, tell him that he has less authority in deciding what martial arts are good for than you, by virtue of the fact that he doesn't do any.

Kickboxer - Just The Kicking by Black6xin martialarts

Doing multiple kicks with one chamber seems to be a bad idea for full contact sparring when the importance of power is considered.

Also, who spars with their elbows up when you opponent just keep kicking you in the body? WHY?

Most knifes can be sharpened to be very sharp, depending on how thick the blade is, it will make a difference on its slicing ability, generally, a thinner blade will be better for slicing.

This biggest difference between a good knife and a bad knife is not how sharp it is, it's edge retention.

I think in a scenario like that it would be justified to address the others through the person responsible for the recruitment process.

My apologies, I posted the thought hastily, I'm reading the Chinese translation, now that I have a copy in front of me, it does indeed say the gen is not made from minerals.

However, it also said that people believe it's a gift from outer space, coincidence?

Look for work, it's the holiday now in the US isn't it? A bar job, babysitting, shelf stacking, even volunteer if you're really out of options, but get some sort of work experience.

Also, bear in mind that your feelings about your parents won't necessarily be completely correct, they're concerned about you, to what extent, I cannot say, but I certainly do share some of the pain, I was recently approached to interview for a role in a pretty big plc, a recruiter found my CV on a job site, my mum was convinced the company was dodgey despite me assuring her that everything is legit and it also looked like a great place to work, I'm 23.

As for the last part, try reasoning with them, tell them that confining you to the house will only make you do even less, from your post, I would imagine that you're pretty intelligent, tell them how wrong they are, failing that, look for work using telephone and internet regardless, then just head out one day, when they ask where you're going, just tell them you're off to a job interview.

"Job seekers should band together and grow a spine. No thank you notes. Not unless you're given an offer." by mendozaaain jobs

[–]Rice_Daddy 2 points3 points ago

Whilst I agree that a thank you card shouldn't influence the decision at all, I still believe that job seekers should send thank you notes/cards, if only to maintain a positive relationship for the future.

For all the jobs I have applied for, the decision generally came the same or next working day, so there was never time to send a card to influence decision anyway, but that didn't stop me from sending them.

Thank you letter, e-mail or phone call? by UnbelievableRosein jobs

[–]Rice_Daddy 0 points1 point ago

I tend to send a thank you card to each person who interviewed me on the day, but if you're afraid the card won't arrive before the decision, just send an email, although bear in mind that the gesture rarely change the outcome explicitly, an email less so, it might be a swaying factor if there are some really good candidates, but if they thought you weren't a good fit for the role at the interview, a thank you won't change their mind.

Under-performing UK civil servants will be identified and fired under plans to rank all government officials in order of ability by maxwellhillin worldnews

[–]Rice_Daddy 1 point2 points ago

I'm guessing you're talking about civil servants specifically, since teachers, health workers, emergency services etc are pretty self explanatory, although they are still public sector workers.

Some example of the things that civil servants do, for example, they run the Job Centre, helping people find work and making sure they're actually looking, other civil servants might do some research stuff such as the ONS raking up insightful information about the country or manage projects, which can range from international projects to boost global economy, or domestic projects to encourage local growth, the list goes on and on, and those diplomats you ring if you run into trouble overseas? Civil servants. They do more than you think.

As for local government public sector workers, they can range from town planning, organising garbage collection, budgeting for maintaining public areas etc etc, if public workers didn't exist, a lot of things would be a mess.

Unless, of course, if by 'doesn't need to exist' you mean that they can all be outsourced and privatised, in which case, that's a different talk altogether, although some work obviously still can't be privatised.

Under-performing UK civil servants will be identified and fired under plans to rank all government officials in order of ability by maxwellhillin worldnews

[–]Rice_Daddy 0 points1 point ago

To my knowledge, public sector pay to date is determined nationally, so whilst a public sector worker in less wealthy places are paid above local average, public sector pay in London is paid below local average.

I believe plans are being made to change that, also, I'm not sure if you read the article, but it suggested that public sector workers, specifically civil servants are not unsackable, but senior managers are reluctant to take action.

Under-performing UK civil servants will be identified and fired under plans to rank all government officials in order of ability by maxwellhillin worldnews

[–]Rice_Daddy 1 point2 points ago

I think it's important to fire poor performers, but if the company have simply evolved to the point where all the employees are already in the top 5-10% of people, if they are actually good performers who comes at the bottom 10% of that, they should not be fired, they are brilliant people, a better strategy could be to work out how to raise their standards further rather than trying to hire other people.

Salary should always be based on the level of responsibility, local pay rates, performance, among other factors, to say that they should not make 6 figure full stop is illogical, and if the job is being done badly now, the job will only be done worse when they can't offer competitive salary to attract talent.

AFAIK a lot of bigger companies have a policy of not giving references, it leaves them liable to law suits if they aren't dome properly, in this case they will give a factual reference to confirm that you worked there, your position, and duration.
