I'm not a military guy but my understanding is that if you don't absolutely do everything in your power including putting your life on the line to help your brothers in arm you have some serious shit coming your way. So even out of peer pressure and pack mentality it is probably "easier" and not that selfless to be heroic instead of running away. Not taking anything away from the courage needed to be in that situation in the first place though.

Knives 'illegal' to buy/ship to NYC? by jpriddyin nyc

Not illegal to own, illegal to carry and most online sellers just won't take the chance with NY and California. It may be easier for you to deal with individuals selling on forums, plus you might get a better price out of it. That's what I do with balisongs.

I would share your view if we humans weren't overpopulating the planet and sucking resources dry. I do not have self-loathing for my own species, I think we are better than everything else just because we succeeded in controlling our environment and all other species but because we are so numerous and parasitic to the globe now I just don't think each individual human life is that precious, mine included.

I would disagree with your interpretation. We are not heading towards a super human form of ourselves we are just changing. Selection is a game of good enough, not the best possible. So if you are handicapped, ugly and sick and have a baby, you win the gene transmission lottery even though you had pretty low odds. If you are healthy, rich, intelligent and decide to not have kids, you are just not cashing in a winning ticket. But we are not all playing the same game anyways...

I find it interesting that our evolution (just like every other living organism's evolution) is based on traits that increase mating potential, including our modern society, jobs, status etc... except that we get so caught up into our own created world that a lot of people don't even know why we are here in the first place. Then again it's not like I want more humans around so thank you on behalf of my potential children and grand-children for the added resources left on the planet.

Obese man cut from chair he was stuck in for 2 years dies; skin fused with maggot-infested fabric by Candlemannin WTF

[–]RelativeObjectivity 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Let us assume this man was on a non-optimal diet which yielded a 0.4 lbs bowel movement 3 times per week. After 2 years we would have roughly 120 lbs of waste generated by this individual into the very chair he was sitting in. Probably started off as a shart and got a bit lazy.

Best part is that there were roomates (wtf) and yeah, they freaked out when he was unconscious, not the fact that he slowly became one with the chair.

Why crossing your fingers works … if you're lucky by ichthisin skeptic

[–]RelativeObjectivity 1 point2 points ago

I think superstition may help instead of actual focus on real things but it can't outperform actual focus on real things.

I do think it outperforms it for the average person. Given no training whatsoever, superstition will be much easier to "use" instead of the meditation or conscious focus approach. That is why it is so much easier.

The same applies to morals, it is so much easier to be told what is right and what is wrong by an established source of authority rather than to actually think about it and figure out why such and such thing would be right or wrong or neither. When done properly both paths lead to the same result of inner peace but I believe we like to trick ourselves because it is just easier.

Aside from that I completely agree with your point and believe that everybody should be learning this.

Everything we need we already have within us but somehow it is much easier to trick our brain into thinking that we are in "lucky mode" instead of actually focusing and triggering the right hormonal or chemical cocktail on command for improved dexterity/memory/speed etc...

I wish it were easier to be "awaken" but chances are, a superstitious or religious person will outperform (like in this article) and probably be happier than the average non-believer/non superstitious: that is the positive power of delusion. It would be so much easier if our brain wasn't this placebo craving gullible blob of irrationality and instead would do what we want it to without the need to use tricks and diversions.

Now that we have a few more admins, can someone PLEASE fix the search feature??? by shortyjacobsin reddit.com

[–]RelativeObjectivity 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you fix the search feature reddit will only have 2 submissions a day since most of the stuff are re-posts. It's not a big deal, and this is a democracy so whatever people want to see they are free to upvote it.

A minor annoyance (for me) that results from the absence of search is that we end up with submissions such as: "Hi, I have self-confidence issues and I want reddit to tell me how I can talk to girls/get some action" every other week.

Not that I don't sympathize with the issue but usually the comments are always the same more or less from one submission to the other and nothing new has really been gained in the process.

So yeah, fix the search for this place to be less socially awkward. "How do I use my penis?" is a valid question but should not appear more than once. Thank you.

I like your measuring system; I usually go with pounds or kg but fractions of "a girl" is a good standard too.

Also, punching your neighbor's dog is not the same as punching an attack dog high on adrenaline and set on you. By the time you armed your punch it would already have most of its teeth sandwiching your arm and making it's way to some delicious bone marrow.
