Quebec's education minister quits after the 14 weeks long student strike by slawnwaterin worldnews

They obviously know how good they have it, since they fought to get it and are fighting to keep. And they'll keep fighting even when those who have a shitty deal want to see them torn down to their sorry state.

Game development on Linux? by NotYourGuyin gamedev

[–]ReddEdIt 2 points3 points ago

I use Haxe in FlashDevelop on Virtualbox running Windows on my Linux (Peppermint) netbook.

Haxe targets just about everything, so I can test my game in Linux or Windows. You can also use Eclipse in linux instead of FlashDevelop, but the latter seems to be more commonly used for Haxe, so I figured it would be easier to set up and learn by going with the most common approach. I may give it a shot in Eclipse later on.

It's only been a couple months so far and I'm loving Haxe.

MMM: Can We All Stop This Fucking Complaining About our Government? by ALTRUISM_IS_WRONGin financialindependence

Ignorance and blind optimism with exclamation points. Yes, America is much nicer than countries it has bombed, conquered, fought proxy wars in and exploited.

Even with ignoring the reasons and the history of why the US is a nicer place to live than the world's slums and battlefields, there is still value in understanding the opportunities and advantages one has in being there than those alternatives. Blind optimism is not the best way, especially when that medical problem that should have been covered by your insurance bankrupts your family, or when your major clients move to China, or your military clients close up shop because the unnecessary wars have slowed, or maybe you get fired one day because your company doesn't need a valid reason to do so.

Blaming Obama for all your problems is just as infantile as exclaiming that "you can BE the president!"

tl;dr: Yes you'd be better off in the US than in Laos, Iraq, Mexico or Chile but that's because of what the US has done to the other nations and their people. Even still, you'd probably be better off in Canada.

Reddit, my friends call me a scumbag because I automate my work when I was hired to do it manually. Am I? by CS-NLin AskReddit

And you still believe something is true because it's found in a management textbook? Safe to assume their both business degrees of some sort?

It's a true story, it was in one of my management textbooks.

Your degree is worthless. You may earn lots of money because of your degree.

Scumbag Realism, how do you deal with it? by TheNosferatuin gamedev

[–]ReddEdIt 0 points1 point ago

It's definitely a good suggestion. Imagine you aren't making a game, but are designing a spaceship's user interface. How would you represent the identically inconvenient reality in that situation? And if you keep the UI code separate from the simulation code, you can represent the 'reality' in multiple ways and allow the player to swap between them at will (or have multiple views up at once).

violence through economic policies, the war on drugs, poverty, etc

The war on drugs is one of literal violence and oppression.

Egypt... by [deleted]in Anarchism

[–]ReddEdIt 2 points3 points ago

Both of those movements involved significant violent resistance. Much like how people have tried to paint the Egyptian uprising as non-violent, this was the goal, just as with Martin Luther King Jr.

By whitewashing history to pretend that non-violence is all there was and all that was needed the State has succeeded in turning would-be armies of revolutionaries into mere annoyances. This is essentially the answer to your original question.

Btw, that list includes non-violent protests that ended in tragedy as well as those that were part of a greater whole (as were your examples).

[–]ReddEdIt 2 points3 points ago

How many non-violent movements can you name that have wrested power from the oppressors? In a discussion I had on reddit a while back regarding US movements, we came up with only one; women's suffrage, and that took 70 years to succeed.

My boss is a "tuck your shirt in" nazi (among other things), so I found a loophole in the dress code where I dont have to tuck in my shirt. What things have you done "by the book" just to piss off your boss? by kazin420in AskReddit

Your job regardless of what your description is, is to be helpful.

Just like when something goes wrong at home, it's your employer's responsibility to advance you some extra money, give you time off without stress or hassle or give you a ride in when your car breaks down. If your employer does these things, they are awesome and you should reciprocate. If they do not, then your sentimentality is being abused and you are a sucker.

It's the same thing as people sticking with underwater mortgages, because keeping your agreements and paying off your debt are "the right things to do." While on the other hand the bank will happily foreclose and take your home if it can and if someone feels it's a better (or at least easier) financial decision for the company.

When it comes to your job and your business relationships, you should only care as much as you are being cared for.

Military personnel of Reddit, what misconceptions do civilians have about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? by AbiteMolestiin AskReddit

[–]ReddEdIt 1 point2 points ago*

The oil is flowing via the open market and OPEC quotas are no longer adhered to in Iraq. The wide array of foreign corporations involved in the process ensures that there will be plenty of oil available for whomever can afford it. Nothing was "given back to them", unless by "them" you mean wealthy Iraqi businessmen and corrupt politicians who are happy to sell everything to the highest bidder.

As long as your country does not withhold any of its resources for political reasons (either internal or external) then the US is content.

*To look at it from the other direction - even if Exxon-Mobil had secured 100% of Iraqi oil contracts it would not mean that the US had stolen their oil or that the US government would have any control over the pricing or ultimate use of the oil.

[–]ReddEdIt 0 points1 point ago

Wresting control of oil from an OPEC nation into the hands of Western countries is a victory, as having troops stationed in several OPEC nations. "Because of oil" does not mean that an invaded country has its oil stolen from the ground and pumped into the gas tanks of the victors, but is a long term strategy that has more to do with the pushback against embargo of 1973 and ensuring access to a vital resource that the US and partners require to maintain dominance.

Just keep in mind your the horrors of your own culture, whatever that may be. None of them are clean, and all the powerful nations on the planet are guilty of many worse things than marrying 9 year olds (such as killing countless thousands of children in bogus wars with no prosecution of the perpetrators calling the shots).

Criticism of one's religion or culture is a bitter pill when coming from someone who believes their own to be a shining example to the unwashed heathens of the world.
