What's the biggest non-sexual benefit of having a girlfriend/boyfriend? by littlebalooneyin AskReddit

[–]Please_send_baguette 69 points70 points ago

Not a gender thing. A "when you work 60 (70, 80) hours a week and see no incentive to cut on your precious free time to have a sit-down dinner by yourself" thing. I am a woman, and my pantry has been a joke since my partner moved away.

Currently the opposite for me as well, but in a different way. I am temporarily long distance with my partner of 5 years, and I drink so much more now that he's not here.

And I think some classical works are fucking metal on their own already, like this, or that....

Mh, good question. The pressure to have absolutely perfect skin is much stronger on women, for sure, but I think it applies to men too to a degree. It's not unusual at all for men to get plastic surgery to correct acne scars. I don't typically see men wearing the ridiculous apparatus women use to protect themselves from the sun in the summer, though (umbrella + sun visor + face mask + gloves...)

Here's an interesting source of media images in Korea on this topic: http://thegrandnarrative.com/category/body-image/skin-whitening-body-image/

The ideal of paleness in Asia comes with plenty of problems. Think tanning is unhealthy? Women here apply whitening products daily. There are race and class implications as well - not everyone is as candid about it, but a couple of Japanese women outright told me that they kept their skin white so as not to be mistaken for a Filipino maid.

French prime minister promises to implement equal marriage and adoption rights for gays by mepperin worldnews

[–]Please_send_baguette 3 points4 points ago

The current adoption situation in France is that single (unmarried) individuals are allowed to adopt, regardless of orientation, but if 2 people want to adopt together they need to be married. Since there is no recognition of same sex marriages, gay people can't adopt as a couple. There are loopholes that are kind of up to whoever handles your adoption file, but we're definitely missing the explicit authorization for gay adoption.

CAJUN. How much of this can a native continental French speaker understand? Is this even real? by DogPencilin French

[–]Please_send_baguette 0 points1 point ago

From France here, could understand maybe 85% on the first try and 100% on the second. Took me a while to get his pronunciation of "écrevisse". And does he call his pot "la chaudière"? Sounds cute!

Some of my father's family has never left the deep French countryside (in Burgundy) and some of their speech is similar - flipped "r"s, a drawl on some vowels. Except they would never say "okay, that's it!"

Un ventre? Un bon vivant? It depends a lot on whether you want to infer a negative connotation or not.

Possibly moving to Germany after the Summer...Questions by norml_normlin germany

I'm interested in taking some language classes in Germany - moving there in 3 weeks. Could you let me know what program / school you went through, and how it went? I typically do best with intensive language programs.

All birth control methods have some failure rates, even when used perfectly. Lactational amenorrhea actually has fairly good odds, comparable to the pill and significantly better than condoms (see comparative chart here).

Check out /r/LongDistance, lots of us are in similar situations. I was long distance with my partner for over 2 years at the beginning of our relationship while we did internships and finished grad school in different countries. Then we moved in together for 2 years. Then he moved to a different continent for work, we were LD for 6 months and I will join him in 3 weeks!

With love, dedication and a solid head on your shoulders it can work, and it will be a great learning experience for the trials of coupled life that the 2 of you will experience over (hopefully) the decades to come.

Has anyone here gotten a MBA (Management)? How hard or time consuming was the program compared to the B.S. or M.S. engineering program? by morto00xin engineering

[–]Please_send_baguette 0 points1 point ago

I did both an MBA (mine was specifically a master's in project and program management with a focus on entrepreneurship taught by a business school) and a master's in ME. The MBA was not hard at all, most (all?) of the material falls under the umbrella of Good Ol' Common Sense. It is time consuming though, especially if you take management certifications like Prince2 (it's a lot of cramming).

What you can gain from an MBA is not what you learn (knowing the jargon is a plus, but it's nothing you wouldn't learn by reading through a marketing textbook or working with business-oriented people for a few weeks). It's mostly the certifications if you take any, and the networking opportunities. You need to milk the human resources of your MBA program for all it's got. If you don't have the time for that, then you'd be missing on the real added value of the program.

Also, what are your goals with this program? Do you want to move away from engineering into a business oriented profession? Or do you want to combine the EE and MBA skills? If so, do you already know what kind of jobs this would lead you to? Is the MBA going to make a real difference in accessing these jobs?

Visa pour travailler en France - est-ce j'en ai besoin ou non? Je pars le 21 mai, aidez-moi svp! by kywaiin france

[–]Please_send_baguette 6 points7 points ago

Never heard of it, but French people aren't necessarily the most qualified to know about visas for France - since we never need them. Your best bet is to call your local French embassy, confirm that this matches your situation and receive the explanations on how to get this authorization. Good luck!

Once gay marriage is legalized what do you think will be the next big social rights movement? by myfairlady91in AskReddit

[–]Please_send_baguette 1 point2 points ago

I am by no means an expert, but my understanding is that trans people face very different problems than cis queer people. For example, belittling or disbelief of their identity from the medical community, pathologization of their identity, legal issues pertaining to the recognition of their gender, sometimes discrimination within the LGBT community itself (a couple with one or two trans partners can pass for straight and may not be considered queer enough to be included in the community by some). I believe that the rates of hate crime against trans people, including murder, are also higher than against cis gay or lesbian people, and these are not recognized everywhere as hate crimes.

Overall, you're right that the LGBT movement as a whole fights against the discrimination and bashing of its members (like all civil rights movements), but since the discrimination takes different forms for different populations, it calls for different approaches and actions.

Once gay marriage is legalized what do you think will be the next big social rights movement? by myfairlady91in AskReddit

[–]Please_send_baguette 3 points4 points ago

Yes. The issues and inequalities faced by trans people are completely different from those of cis LGB folks. Also, L, G, B are mutually exclusive categories while Ts can also be L, G, B, or straight (or pan-, or asexual...) This bothers me!

Punching someone else for being a dick is a crime, regardless of their gender. It's assault. You are only legally allowed to use physical violence in self-defense and only with a lesser or equal level of violence that is being used against you - at most, restraining them or incapacitating them. So, no, you can't punch a woman in the face for "nagging".

HF (hydrogen fluoride) and Cl2 (chlorine gas) are anhydrous gases (dry, containing no water) and halogens or behaving like halogens (first column of the periodic table, highly reactive elements).

Upon contact with water or things with high water content, like the cells of your windpipe and lungs, these gases spontaneously decompose into hydrofluoric acid and hydrochloric acid, respectively (and destroy your cells in the process). These compounds are still highly toxic and corrosive, and will keep causing damage inside your body. They also have the property to penetrate lipids (fat compounds) and burrow deep into your organism before causing damage.

So the immediate effect of exposure is intense pain (one of my coworkers suffered from Cl2 gas exposure, he described inhaling it as the sensation of a drill go through his nose and sinuses). The secondary effects can be nerve damage, sequestration of your calcium, both in your bones and in your blood, the latter leading to cardiac arrest. The tertiary effect is that these lung cells originally damaged by the anhydrous gas keep leaking, filling your lungs with water, and if left untreated, can cause death by drowning after a few days.

(Process engineer here, not biologist or medical professional, so qualified redditors please feel free to complement the information!)
