Missing Female Cyclist in Lafayette, LA. Please Upvote! by ams9698in TwoXChromosomes

[–]PipPipCheerio 25 points26 points ago

The difference is that one is begging for upvotes for the sole purpose of collecting imaginary internet points. This, on the other hand, is asking for upvotes so more people see a PSA about a missing person-- a personal friend of the OP, no less-- who could have been killed or abducted. Also, it's a self-post and doesn't receive karma, so there's no reason to complain that it asks for upvotes.

Fundie girl I went to school with posts a religious picture and the class genius responds with a smart-ass comment. Made my day. by Waffle_Quafflein atheism

Yeah, I would have liked the response better if that part had been left off.

I feel like my ex crushed me. by nimravidin TwoXChromosomes

[–]PipPipCheerio 2 points3 points ago

That's understandable. Being in an abusive relationship is traumatic, and when something reminds you of what you were dealing with, it's going to trigger those feelings associated with your evil ex. The only thing you can do is to ask yourself questions about what you're feeling and why, and not scold yourself for sometimes having anxiety because of your past relationship (in other words, try to not feel bad for feeling bad.)

If you don't feel comfortable talking to your current boyfriend, a trusted friend could help you work through these feelings. If you can afford therapy, it would probably help you more than you might think. Check your health insurance plan if you have one to see if therapy is covered; sometimes the first couple of visits are. If you are still a student, you should go to the student counseling center without delay. It's an amazing resource, and it exists for just this kind of situation.

Also, here, have an internet hug. Things will get better with time. For what it's worth, every time I've ever seen a relationship like the one you described with your ex, the kinds of hurtful things he said to you generally indicate that the abuser is the broken person, not the abused.

Maybe, but sometimes it's better to make someone think about why a statement they make is problematic rather than to shut them down with a witty retort/personal attack that puts them on the offensive.

"Please, tell me more about how I should feel about sex, how often I should have it, and who I should do it with." by rmuserin TwoXChromosomes

[–]PipPipCheerio 1 point2 points ago

Oh, jeez, people are telling her she deserves to be beaten/raped?! That's horrible!

You make a good point. She does sound really young, and I shudder to think what kind of idiot I would have made of myself as a teenager if I had used a widely-read blogging platform.

Edit: Accidentally a word.

Internet Man Does Not Want To Be On The Google Anymore by redcolumbinein TwoXChromosomes

You could almost think that this guy is trying to become internet-infamous. Aggressive bullying + willful ignorance of how the internet works + trying to run damage control in the clumsiest way possible= surest way to harness the internet rage machine. It's like he's Ocean Marketing and Cooksource combined.

Ah, I was talking about the post from stacymicheleee21 which Laci reposted. Your comment makes much more sense now!

If you do a Tumblr search for her account, you can see that a lot of people have been calling her out on the post Laci quoted, and she has been responding with increasingly irrational and judgey arguments.

[–]PipPipCheerio 5 points6 points ago

Are you really using a grammatical error as part of your argument?

No, I was merely pointing out that it was a much-needed moment of comic relief for me among her other crazypants posts.

Her message is of tolerance and making your own decisions for yourself

Wait, really? Did you read her posts? She is specifically stating that any woman who has sex before she's oh-so-madly-fairytale-in-love with a guy is a dirty slutbag with no self-respect. It's not exactly a message of tolerance and support for other women's sexual autonomy.

I just found her Tumblr, and the things she's been posting in the fallout of this post spreading are mind-blowingly condescending. She recently posted in response to someone calling her out on being judgmental that one night stands are only fun for those who have no self-respect. Her sheer ignorance coupled with self-righteousness is making me see red-- although this hilariously poorly worded post from her made me laugh:

Condoms, birth control, and dental dams ARE NOT 100% PREVENTABLE!!

It's true! Despite our best efforts, birth control devices still exist!!

(Edit: To be clear, I'm referring to Stacimicheleee21's posts, not Laci's. Sorry for the confusion!)

I want to cook a romantic dinner for a guy. Suggestions? by couldntbeathrowawayin OneY

If you're making Italian food, stuffed mushrooms would make an awesome side. They're super easy to make and very tasty. Plus, they would fit well into a romantic dinner.

When I compliment a girl and she looks at me like I am a freak. by dolphinflipin AdviceAnimals

[–]PipPipCheerio 1 point2 points ago

If you're dancing with someone, a compliment is totally appropriate in that context. Presumably you're in a bar or club, which is the right place for being flirty.

What women generally find disheartening or objectifying is when we're walking down the street, going about our lives, or in a more professional setting, and men start throwing out uncomfortable compliments.

That's some Mad Men shit right there. It makes me sad to know that some people still think that way.

2X: Would you date a guy who crossdresses? by Dudelookslikealadyin TwoXChromosomes

[–]PipPipCheerio 4 points5 points ago

Honest answer: I would be fine with a partner crossdressing, but I would be really uncomfortable if he wanted to crossdress in public while I was out with him. I know, I know; it's not really fair, and probably just reveals my own personality flaws, but that's how I would feel.

That said, finding out that he crossdressed would not make me think of him any differently. Hell, women's clothes are fun! I wouldn't blame him one bit. I could see having little private dress-up parties with a boyfriend and really enjoying myself. I mean, I can't see it being a turn-on, but it wouldn't be a turn-off either.

Their Yelp page is here. Leaving a negative public rating might be a more effective way of expressing your disapproval of the school's behavior, assuming you're willing to act purely on the word of OP's friend.

As a half-blind glasses-wearer who occasionally indulges in ridiculous eye makeup, I say don't wish away your glasses! I feel like I can sometimes get away with over-the-top eye makeup because my glasses lend a touch of seriousness to my appearance.

Whoa, guys, remember retiquette?! I don't agree with this poster's point either, but it's a valid opinion. Don't just downvote someone you disagree with when the comment contributes to the discussion.
