Freeze Ray > Graviton Pulse

I don't buy the narrative that Obama is "in trouble." He's ably kept us out of a Depression, he's winning the war against the people who attacked us on 9/11, and he's about to pass Health Care Reform that lays the groundwork for universal coverage. Sounds more like kicking ass than trouble to me.

Pilebsa 3 points4 points 2 days ago* [-]

Furthermore:

  • The whole notion that there's a "war" is BS in the first place. According to the War Powers Act, only Congress can declare war, and Congress hasn't done so.

  • Who would we declare war against anyway? The "War on terror" is just an abstraction, as winnable as is "The War on Drugs."

  • How do you even determine what "winning" entails? The concept of "terrorism" is totally subjective. One nation's "freedom fighter" or "patriot" is another's "terrorist."

Why put more stress on the PC's power supply when you can simply get an AC-based charger and plug into the wall?

The less stuff plugged into the PC, the more secure it is.

Then this thread is useless. Otherwise your post is just another, "some guy was mean to me, give me some attention"-type post.

You are obviously protesting the way you were treated. If you don't out the place, then you're not improving the situation for anybody else.

What's the point of this if you're not going to out the "museum?"

Pilebsa 25 points26 points 4 days ago[-]

Ok, let's say you can get a hooker to lay naked on the pool table for $100. You'd burn through the money in 38 years. I didn't necessarily say they were high class hookers, but then again they're just laying naked. Ok, maybe that's cheap, but even if you paid them $500, that's still seven and a half years. If you're fucking around with hookers every weekend, that might not be an unrealistic life expectancy.

If by awesome you mean ridiculously overpriced, doesn't improve playability of billiards, and will eventually be boring, then yes.

$200,000 for a video projector over a pool table? For that kind of money I could hire hookers to lay naked on the sides every weekend until I die.

Where do atheists come from? Scientists have studied why people believe in religion for decades, but have ignored the converse; why do nonbelievers not believe?

Pilebsa 0 points1 point 4 days ago[-]

I've also noticed an increasing new breed of "objectivst atheists" who are becoming more popular. Like conservatives who seem to resent the government because there is no specific benefit-to-their-specs for their tax dollars, the new objectivist/conservative atheist resents god because he hasn't done anything specific for him, and therefore chooses to call himself "atheist."

Atheists come from the womb.

Everyone is born atheist.

Until someone indoctrinates you into irrational, superstitious thinking, you'd have no inclination to believe in supernatural things.

I think about how as a young child, one might be afraid of the dark or think there's a monster under their bed. I don't think these fears materialized out of nothing. There's probably a genetic component built in for us to fear something we don't understand. Spirituality was initially born to alleviate some of that innate fear we feel as part of our defense mechanism that cannot be otherwise easily quelled. But this could also be achieved by a rational understanding of the world and our part in it.

Pilebsa -1 points0 points 4 days ago[-]

It's not "spirituality", it's a need for answers to questions. Spirituality is just a made up answer to satiate weak-minded people. When the fraud perpetrates on a large scale and starts to influence more intelligent people, then routine, say weekly indoctrination is necessary to maintain the illusion. In some cases, repetitive indoctrination is implemented several times a day (Islam).

In 2001 there were about 55000 Scientologists in US. In 2008, it fell to 25000: the brave new Scientology is all these beautiful buildings and real estate and no people

Pilebsa 4 points5 points 4 days ago[-]

Whatever the Scientologists have perpetrated pales in comparison to the Christians. If the Catholics had been selling pot instead of raping young boys, the government would own every church building in the country.

Pilebsa 0 points1 point 4 days ago[-]

how much have you spent so far?

I've estimated that I've probably spent somewhere in the area of $26k, most of it on cabinets, new appliances and the contractors for the cabinets and granite.

you said ten new circuits, that sound like a lot. how does that break down?

Well, the house had been hacked pretty badly by the previous owners and many of the internal wiring was not up to code. Previously I had run my own ground lines for a lot of the existing circuits and when I got to the kitchen I didn't want to have to mess with the crazy wiring so I made up my mind I'd run all-new circuits for everything in the kitchen and terminate the existing wiring, some of which went from the kitchen to other parts of the house.

I ran separate circuits to: two banks of outlets, island, microwave, recessed lighting, track lighting, double oven (220v), fridge and some other spots.

Generally I tried to exceed code wherever possible. I used heavier wiring and higher-quality materials. When we knocked down the walls, we put up heavy pressure-treated beams - It was way overkill especially since the house is one-story.

what was the most unexpectedly hard part?

By far the tiling. I had done tiling before but this time I wanted to get fancy, so I decided on a pattern of 16" tiles with 6" insert accent tiles at a 45 degree angle. This required me to make four cuts on each tile to turn the larger ones into octagons. My tile saw wasn't set up to be able to do diagonal cuts on a 16" tile so first I had to fabricate a special extension/jig just to do it, then I went through about four blades until I found one that worked well, then I ended up making well over 1200 cuts. It was horrendous. On top of that, working with the mortar and grout has really wreaked havoc on my hands. I wake up and my arms are numb in the morning and swollen. I think that'll go away after a bit. By far the most time consuming part was doing the tile but it came out really nice. I wouldn't do it again though.. LOL

For a long time I've been wanting to re-do the ultra-crappy 10x10 foot kitchen I've had in my house and I finally decided to do it. After having a lot of bad experiences with contractors and not figuring out how or why they were smarter or more capable, I decided to do almost everything myself. Here is a before: old kitchen, removing walls and after: work in progress but a lot better.

The only thing I outsourced was the installation of granite and countertops - after watching those guys (and I had to, like a hawk to keep them from screwing stuff up) I would DIY it if I had to do it again - it was hardly rocket science. Virtually everything else was done by myself and my neighbor, including tile, drywall, electrical, plumbing, framing, windows, lighting, etc. I also did a bunch of research into appliances and alarm systems and all sorts of stuff. This renovation involved the taking down of two load-bearing walls, removal of an exterior door, removal and replacement of windows and framing, movement of plumbing, gas and drain lines, and the addition of 10 new circuits in the electrical system. I'm happy to share my experience.

I'm interested in trends and the player's perspective of the value of cards. Is the game becoming more or less popular? Has it peaked in terms of popularity? Is WOTC cranking out so many expansions that the values of cards are chaotic? Is the online version hurting the old version? Anyone have any idea what the production figures are for expansions? Etc..
