What does /r/autos think about a $3000, rust-free 1981 BMW 633CSi? by eppey1in Autos

[–]Octal040 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

633? I don't think I'd pay $3000 for it unless the paint is good enough to leave as is. I'd pay that much for a 635, tho. I do my own mechanical work so I usually buy cars like that based on how hard it is to make it look good.

Biggest problem I've had out of these things is the electrical, tho. I've got one (owned four total) that has been sitting for years because I can't figure out why it usually (not always) doesn't crank at the ignition switch. I've replaced the ignition switch, starter, and main fuse box. Traced all wires back. Taken it to a mechanic. It'll crank every time if I jump the diagnostic port. Damn gremlins.

Another thing to watch out for is the 4HP22 Automatic transmission, if that's what's in it. If it has no problems now, consider your self lucky. Just never, ever, never, rev the engine while it's in Park or Neutral. It could have been upgraded at some point but don't find out the hard way.

"Believing Anarchy can work is just a phase!" - Your thoughts on this claim by SaneDunkin Anarchism

I doubt I'll ever believe that it can't work. I may, at some point, come to believe that we're not getting or can't get any closer to anarchy in my life time but that's a lot different from changing my mind about the last 15 years of my life. I didn't even really begin to understand or embrace the concepts involved until I was 30.

Well, I'm liking it so far but apparently some of the networking stuff isn't included in beta2. It wasn't apparent what was missing or how to connect to my NAS, media servers, and Windows boxes. It was cake on 10.10 but I haven't been home to really work on it, tho.

Another thing I miss is having my apps split into categories. I imagine a Lens could be made to do it.

I really like Delta Community CU, also. If you have a branch near you, that's the one to go with. I had to drop them because it was 30 miles to the nearest branch. I went with them initially because they were the only ones that were part of the CU network that allowed me to easily move money between here and my CU in California.

Once I didn't need the California accounts any more I moved to Georgia's Own. It's a smaller CU but just as good for those that live OTP.

Bitcoin has been trading over $1 all day! by reardencodein Libertarian

[–]Octal040 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It will be near impossible to shut it down completely. They could (will) use the new copyright domain jacking powers to try and block access to exchanges. That is temporary at best and will only slow trading and maybe hurt acceptance.

The Feds can also datamine the block chain and begin to track the movements of individual transactions. This has already been used by an exchange to track a fairly large theft. That still doesn't allow them to easily put positive ID on traders. The best the exchange has been able to do so far is freeze the stolen bitcoins when they end up on it's servers again. However, online services and software is already available that makes this kind of datamining much more difficult.

It will be a massive undertaking to reliably start convicting users. Only when/if the arrests start, will squeemish users really back away. The rest will keep going but move over to darknets and Tor. Then the only options left to the Fed is watching physical places where Bitcoin intersects thier jurisdiction. They can still only get at the little guys buying food or whatever. Those that stay inside the Bitcoin system, the ones building and maintaining systems, will be fairly safe.

Bitcoin may see a huge challenge when the gov't gets it's way with this internet ID scam. Its not hard to guess the end goal. Tying every bit of data moved on the net to specific people before anyone is even allowed online.

Whatever the fed does, it had better do it fast. The time is rapidly approaching when Bitcoin infrastructure and userbase will have enough built-in redundancy, damage control, and defense to take on anything without having to hide from it. Then it'll be up to bitcoin to fail or not on it's own.

I had a 1956 F-100 and I let my dad junk it because I never thought I'd even move back to this state again. Same with a 1980 grey market BMW L7. Now I have time and no awesome cars to restore.

You may regret it later. If you were near me I'd offer you free storage.

Which do you find more concerning: right libertarianism or state socialism, and why? by JesusFreakingChristin LibertarianLeft

[–]Octal040 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I tend to be more concerned with state socialism than right-libertarianism. If RLs stick to their stated goals and principles it will be easier to live outside or compete with their systems.

As it stands with previous and current state socialist systems, you must participate. Too many atrocities are committed to ensure you participate.

Of course I'm counting on RLs to be moral and consistent in their actions. That may be asking too much when profit is the sole motivation in all human interaction. Also, I base my observation/opinion on a stateless or ultra-minarchist RL society. If the Libertarian Party was suddenly voted into power in the US, today, I would see that being nearly as catastrophic as Stalin taking over.

Wait a sec. "Anything" can be found where? You weren't clear on that.

I'd pay more for services like Netflix and Ubuntu One. I default to torrents when companies like Amazon, Comcast, and AT&T are involved. Just because of their political meddling. For instance, I'm not going to pay double to Comcast just so I can watch an edited version of Doctor Who a week later than the UK release. Same thing for HBO only shows like Game of Thrones or the upcomming American Gods.

Give me everything on a streaming or a la carte service and I'll pay.

Last year he got addicted to speed and shot him self. It was ruled an accident.

Solar Power Breakthrough Could Render Photovoltaic Cells Obsolete by mjanesin energy

Man, I want for this to be true but the details seem very counter intuitive, to me.

I just wish one of these technologies would make it to market. We've been putting off going full solar for years because of PV efficiency improvements and other breakthroughs that are always 2-5 years away. I'm always afraid of being 3 years into a 10 year loan when the holy grail of energy drops.

Yeah. First world problems. :/

Well, I was trying meet you half way. Rest assured, I understand the words I deal with and I am liquid and practical in my opinions.

It seems you're the one that is rigid and 'huffy' about this. I didn't mean to imply that I would give up and go it alone. People should just have the option to join a different community when they are no longer represented. Be it by representative or directly. I just prefer one vote per voice and groups small enough for consensus.

Its strange you try to belittle my opinion now after suggesting direct democracy earlier.

Quite right. I don't mean to speak for everyone or anyone but myself. I did try to cover many bases and I realize the left-libertarian label is very broad. And for good reason. My intent was to impress upon OP that left-libertarians are generally much more radical than he knew.

This sub is usually so dead that I honestly thought no one would show up with other examples. I just wanted to push some buttons to see if he would come a little farther down the rabbit hole.

Because we the people are the government. It is our apparatus.

This is untrue and has never been true. Where there is a group that has power over another group, someone with more resources has and will always find a way to control the power for their benefit alone.

You are not a left-Libertarian. That symbol at the top-left of this sub is the symbol of the Alliance of the Libertarian Left (ALL). All of the individuals and member groups of the ALL are Anarchists. You would fit more with the Green party or even a Socialist party. At best you could be considered a Libertarian Socialist because you still seek to use an elected minority to force economic equality on the majority while being lenient on other moral/social issues.

However, there are others that use the Libertarian Socialist and Left-Libertarian titles for their brand of party politics. That wasn't the intent of this sub-Reddit. Left-libertarians here seek to do away with all party politics and generally take the same anti-hierarchy stance as other anarcho-socialists. Yes, there is an ocean of difference between anarcho-socialism and state socialism. There is a very thin line that separates the Green/Libertarian Socialist parties from the GOP/right-Libertarian parties.

We actively work against the solutions you favor in your OP. We work to create and operate black markets, co-ops, and mutual aid to deprive the state of tax revenue. We run "Do not vote" campaigns for every election. We support and use untaxable, anonymous currencies, bartering, and gifting. We circumvent/break any law when it is morally and financially expedient to do so. Where we differ from right-libertarians is mostly in property rights. While many of us are market anarchists (not all, we count anrcho-socialists/communists/syndicalists as equals) we prefer usufruct property and are anti-copyright/patent, where right-libertarians prefer to retain some centralized authority to maintain and enforce property rights and intellectual property. Yes, we are against usury (interest and rent income) but we believe the solution is to provide people with alternatives to traditional financing rather than using a central authority to force morality and fix prices. We would seek to compete with the old model rather than using the state's storm troopers steal from them. Our means must be consistent with our preferred outcome or we risk becoming the monster we fight.

If all of the speed limit signs were taken away, how far above the now-gone speed limit would you drive (on average)? by rpete710in AskReddit

Same as always.

65-80mph on two lanes. (limit of my car's cornering ability). 80-105mph on highways (my car tops out at 110ish).

Slower in town but I don't hold back when the road and my car can handle it. I've gotten two speeding tickets. The last was in 1999. Been in two wrecks. Both while I was sitting still.

Does anyone live near Georgia Atlanta? by procrastinationwinin AskReddit

The question of rednecks is overblown. Stereotypes abound. The actual rednecks are either cowards or they don't go looking for trouble in public. The main thing NOT to do as Atheist is mention it at work. Generally, religious or political discussion is frowned upon at work. You'll find Christians are the only ones that ignore the rule and if they happen to be your boss, it will hurt you. Even when walking around on the street wearing a shirt that says "Fuck god" on it, people will mostly leave you alone. I've seen it happen. I've even done it. The most trouble I got for it was a guy shaking a bible at me from a moving car.

Now, if your sister needs help, my wife and I live 30-35 miles east of ATL and my wife works in Downtown ATL. If your sister is planning to live on this side of ATL, they could even car-pool. Also, I can loan your sister a car. It's a 1986 Mercedes 190e. It's parked right now because I can't justify buying insurance for it. We already have two other cars on the road. I don't know what her money situation is but I suppose I can sell the Mercedes to her if she wants. It has been a mechanically reliable car but it does need suspension work put into it and I wouldn't call it pretty. I paid $2000 for it and I've put about $400 worth of work into it. I don't think it's worth more than about $1500, tho. I bought it when my brother needed a car and I had a lot of extra cash laying around. It's slow but it gets good MPG. If she has money to spend I would advise her to get something else but in the short term I have no problem letting her drive it until she finds something else.

Where we live there's not much to do but we don't complain. "Doing things" is over rated IMO. I'm on the edge of anti-social myself. My wife is a people person and gets most of her social kicks at work. Work and hobbies are enough for us most of the time. That's not to say there isn't stuff to do. There's clubs, parties, concerts, local music scene, a good theater scene. There's a huge production of Peter Pan in town for the next couple of months. It was worth every dime. I got burned out on partying a long time ago. The most I want to do these days is go to a friends place, see a friend's band play at the Masquerade, or go to a movie a few times a month. But seriously, anything your sister is in to, it is available here and I generally know where to find it.
