Ha! I did that once with a wolf spider that lived around my bathroom. Every single day, he'd either sit between the hinges of the bathroom door, or stand right in the main walkway. I joked that he was suicidal and named him Kenny, for the South Park character.

Unfortunately, the prophecy came true one day. He slipped in the bath tub and drowned. My heart broke when I found him.

Indeed, spider bites, like any wounds, should be tended to properly. Bacteria don't discriminate between different causes of open wounds.

I would rarely move spiders outside. At my old house, I lived alone, so I could leave all the spiders alone. The result was an entirely pest-free home, and I didn't even have to pay for the service.

The only spiders I'd relocate outside were the very large wolves and other specimens that I knew wouldn't survive too long on the limited supply of insects indoors.

Oh, I don't mean to say they should be feared at all. When I say that their venom can kill a person, I only meant that it's physically possible, as opposed to the vast majority of other spider venom that can never under any circumstances cause death in humans.

For latrodectism to actually result in death, your immune system would have to be almost or completely non-existent. Babies, the elderly, and people with severe immune deficiencies are the only ones at risk.

I never even killed my black widows. When I lived back where they were native, I'd simply either leave them be (they really don't move a lot), or get them in a cup to move them outside. If I was in enough of a rush, I'd just skip the cup and use my hands. Widows, like almost all spiders, are not aggressive.

Redbacks and black widows are both members of the same genus, known for producing latrotoxin, one of the only spider venoms that can actually kill a person (albeit an extremely rare occurrence).

Female Australian redbacks have the red splotch on the top of their abdomens, whereas female American black widows have it on the underside of their abdomens. Although this marking isn't necessarily always present, meaning that a spider like the one in this photo may or may not be a widow, its appearance is exclusive to the genus.

tl;dr: Black widows and redbacks are pretty much the same thing.

Perhaps, but searching for that species also gives a lot of results from Israel, which is where OP said he took the photo. Is it possible that the coloration is coincidental rather than evolutionary mimicry? Maybe that's why the other results don't look the same.

What Krucz36 said.

To put it all in layman's terms: Spiders don't have heads. They do have all the head parts (eyes, mouth, fangs, etc), but rather than being located in a structure of their own, the head parts and "chest parts" are all together within the carapace - this is called the cephalothorax.

Incredible. Very well done, my good man.

I suggest you hijack the top comment to repost this, though. This far down, neither will a lot of people see it, nor will it be able to collect enough upvotes to get higher fast enough.

That's some incredible mimicry. The front of the cephalothorax even extrudes somewhat like a head. I can't wait for the ID to come in.

My worst fear is maybe looking in the mirror and seeing this... by Un-nuttyprofessorin creepy

[–]NickDerpov 2 points3 points ago

Pictures and videos involving mirrors never fail to give me goosebumps.

Does anyone know why so many people have such an ingrained fear of mirrors? It's an otherwise pretty mundane object, so there has to be some psychological reason for it.

I'd assume it's because you can see dangers that are behind you (which is otherwise impossible), but wouldn't that make them valuable rather than menacing from an evolutionary perspective?

Not off at all. A lot of people consider pets part of their family. Whether she's a spider, a cat or a canary should have no bearing on that. :)

How I feel when reading anything police related on Reddit... by drink_ALLtheCOFFEEin AdviceAnimals

[–]NickDerpov 20 points21 points ago

Same here. Cops will often just reflect the attitude they're met with. Most of the folks commenting on this thread make their contempt for the police clear. If they talk with officers at that level of respect, it's not surprising they get the same in return.

Here's a life pro tip for everyone, when you get pulled over for speeding, don't explode into a lecture over your 5th Amendment rights. If you actually were speeding, just be a man instead of a child and admit that you were. You'll probably get let off.* All of those YouTube videos that say that you can't get found guilty if you don't admit to it, guess what, they're bullshit.

*Exception to the rule: this won't work on motor cops. If those guys pull you over, your fate is sealed before either of you even say the first word.

Just saved my first spider... feeling pretty good. :) by SarahWondersin spiders

[–]NickDerpov 0 points1 point ago

Seconded.

A sense of revulsion usually comes packaged with arachnophobia. So when you see a spider, try to force yourself to just watch it. Watch it walk around, spin its web, wrap its food, whatever. The instinctive sense of revulsion will dull this way, and at the same time, you'll gain a greater appreciation for how amazing spider behavior really is.

Why should gay marriage be illegal? by RuJinLingin Christianity

[–]NickDerpov 0 points1 point ago

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. I wasn't referring to my social circle alone. I meant everyone from friends, to coworkers, to other students in my classes, to the local news media, to the folks at the grocery store or the DMV, to the car salesmen, and so on. In other words, pretty much anyone I interfaced with. The issue was contentious enough that apparently everyone thought everyone else cared what their opinion on the matter was.

Besides...

just a lot more people outside of your social circles that approved of gay marriage than you thought.

...California voted against gay marriage. The proposition was written in such a way that a "yes" vote was to approve the ban, whereas a "no" vote rejected it, legalizing gay marriage. The only reason it's legal now is because a judge overturned the popular vote... twice.

Regarding the religion issue, I'm not sure how much use multi-religious education would be. You're right that it's a deeply seated personal issue, but you have to remember that folks take their religion on faith by principle, not study.

That said, I know that most theological programs that are offered at the tertiary education level contain a lot of teachings regarding other religions and political systems. A friend of mine finished theology in university (was originally planning to become a priest, ended up working for the church in a "civilian" capacity), and he said that part of the program included studying Marxism, a fairly anti-religious philosophy. I found that pretty interesting.
