Google's Fiber Makes MPAA Skittish. Why Does Hollywood See All Technology In Terms Of Piracy? by UlkeshNaranekin Piracy

[–]MunchkinWarrior 1 point2 points ago

Instead they're probably going to watch the technology develop with caution, wait for pirates to beat them to the punch, then arrive in the market with an inferior product and complaints about how they "can't compete".

This prediction will undoubtedly prove itself (again and again) in years to come.

Try to keep an eye out for Kickstarter projects, like this one. (Or support them, here, by getting a printer kits or parts through suppliers they list, and spread the word to others with an interest.)

In the future it should be possible to print out a new printer! (Some assembly required.) It'll be easier than ever to spread these things to everyone. :)

He's not complaining about the lack of variety in shows that have come out. Instead, he's made a criticism about the future potential of the show.

Apparently, it isn't valid anyhow as the show will be featuring a wider variety after all. (e.g., Dragon Age RPG)

Science has never preserved life. Science has never saved anyone's life. It has only postponed death.

That's absurd. It hasn't only postponed death. The definition of "preserve" is "to care for, maintain; continue." Science has accomplished that for untold numbers of people. Sure, death is inevitable, but that's no reason to ignore the things that bring it about more quickly.

Not to mention, science and medicine deal with things other than death. Life includes many things that bring about suffering and misery. Perhaps you think that we shouldn't bother trying to alleviate such things, because the person or creature suffering will eventually die anyhow? Science addresses these issues as well, often to good result.

So, my reply is that no, science has not only postponed death. It has done that, but also much, much more.

If women are supposed to have the same rights as men, why, when I turn eighteen this September, am I being forced to sign up for the draft, however no woman will ever have to do this? by Rob13869in AskReddit

[–]MunchkinWarrior 1 point2 points ago

If someone actually invaded the country, you wouldn't need a draft. I suspect you couldn't turn away potential recruits fast enough, not to mention the number of armed citizens who wouldn't bother signing up--they'd just head to the lines.

We call it the "scientific method," but is it really? Is it even fathomable that a better method for gaining knowledge is possible? by MunchkinWarriorin askscience

I'm pretty sure I understand the methodology. I'm not sure I could've formed the questions I pose if I didn't have at least a rudimentary grasp.

[–]MunchkinWarrior[S] 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure someone would like to argue that with you. (Though it isn't me, I'd add.) Having said that, it's why I'm asking here why we don't treat science as more than a mere method. There seems to be no alternate "methods" of knowing, and in their absence, science might be better described as the singular process of obtaining knowledge.

We call it the "scientific method," but is it really? Is it even fathomable that a better method for gaining knowledge is possible? by MunchkinWarriorin askscience

[–]MunchkinWarrior[S] 0 points1 point ago

Well, I think it can be said that any technique within the umbrella relies on the core of the scientific method--observation and empirical evidence. The techniques only follow the method, but not circumvent it.

We call it the "scientific method," but is it really? Is it even fathomable that a better method for gaining knowledge is possible? by MunchkinWarriorin askscience

[–]MunchkinWarrior[S] 1 point2 points ago

At the end of the day, can you gather experimental evidence that allows you to predict the outcome of a future experiment within statistical significance? That's science.

Okay, so let's imagine a distant future where a massive body of knowledge has been gained through science as we understand it today. Might another method arise that no longer requires observation and gathering of evidence?

For example, perhaps very powerful computers of this distant future can review the knowledge base, and gaining new knowledge then becomes just a complex logic problem that requires no actual evidence gathering.

Would that qualify as a new method? What would, if not?

I just don't see the possibility of another, real method that might supersede science. Anything else that wouldn't require observation or reproducible evidence almost certainly treads on grounds of the mystical or psychic or religious. I think most of us would agree that those "methods" have a fairly poor track record.

My wife can receives hives (and less occasionally, shortness of breath among other symptoms) after consuming a food or drink that contains sucralose. Aspartame also can also cause her to have heat flashes and gain a redness to her skin color, particularly around the neck and jaw.

She carefully avoids artificial sweeteners as a result. Maybe she is just allergic to them, for whatever reason, but I honestly don't know why there seems to be so much doubt about some people having real, physical reactions to these things. My wife can't be an isolated case.

[WSIG] Now that my friends are interested, what are the must-own board games? by Abstrusein boardgames

[–]MunchkinWarrior 1 point2 points ago

I'm no expert, but I'd suggest that Defenders of the Realm may be a solid choice for you. Reasons?

Pros:

  • Your group may take well to the game's fantasy setting.
  • Quality components and artwork.
  • Fun mechanics that urge teamwork and increase tension as the game progresses.
  • It's quite possible to lose, but isn't a ridiculous challenge.
  • Expansions exist if the game becomes a favorite.
  • Offers a decent variety of characters to play as and with.
  • Very good replay value.

Cons:

  • Setting up the game will take a while longer for your first few games. (That, or familiarize yourself with setup before the first game--after that, it goes a lot faster.)
  • Luck plays a decent-sized role in this game. (Not a con for everyone, but bears a mention.)
  • A little more expensive than other games that might be recommended (roughly in the $50 to $55 range).

In all, it's a fun and often exciting game that works well with almost any gaming group, and one that stands a chance of being played often.

Agreed. Seems like a grand opportunity for the DM, not something that need be recon'd (if there ever is a need for that).

Suggestions for Co-op Titles to Play With Your Girlfriend on PC? by Interference22in gaming

[–]MunchkinWarrior 1 point2 points ago

I've had moments before when she's flat out refused to play something, later caved and suddenly enjoyed herself.

You're not alone. Probably happens all the time--I know I've seen it often enough!

Prime example? The first NWN via Undrentide + HotU. She resisted, gave me the blah-blah, it-doesn't-look-fun bit, and finally relented during a vacation.

The result? On occasion she still talks about the HotU dragon fight and the beast's cavern-covering treasure. Oh, and then there's Deekin. Just saying his name elicits a smile. She was ecstatic to see him NWN2, and heartily let down that he was little more than a merchant.

But you're right. If you could drag her into NWN2, you'd be set for quite some time. And I hear ya on BL2--not too much longer now!

Suggestions for Co-op Titles to Play With Your Girlfriend on PC? by Interference22in gaming

[–]MunchkinWarrior 1 point2 points ago

Barring some of the more mainstream first-person shooters, it seems like you two might want to dip your toes into other genres.

For example, you might try Age of Empires III. Not the new, online piece-of-shit, but the more recent title from the actual series. It has a lot of thematic flavor, is easy to pick up and learn (even for a relative RTS noob) and has a lot of strategic depth. I convinced my not-an-RTS-gamer wife to try it and it's become one of her favorite games--for a long while, I kept catching her playing it solo all the time!

Sins of a Solar Empire also provides another solid and fun co-op (or versus) experience, this time with a sci-fi bent and a slightly longer deeper curve. It's pacing is different than many other RTS games, however, and alternates from a contemplative strategic feel into dramatic and exciting skirmishes and full on battles. It's a lot of fun, and like AOE3, provides tons of replay. Rebellion is also this games upcoming expansion, so there's a future to it if you like the original.

It's a shame that she won't try NWN2, as that can be a ton of fun played co-op and tips you into the RPG genre a bit, too. Have you suggested any of the older D&D titles that are popular such the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series of games? You can get the entire Infinity Engine line of games for a mere $20--but you may want to hold off, as Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 are getting a modern, HD face-lift.

Dead Island is another choice that is RPG-ish, as it appears she isn't tizzy about face-eating zombies. It features drop-in, drop-out as well, if that makes any difference. Since the game has fallen out of favor, the price has also dropped to around $20.

Finally, I might suggest Titan Quest. There's a lot of good things to say about this game and its expansion, even beyond how much fun, how good looking, how addicting and how its co-op is fantastic. Themed with ancient Greek, Egyptian and Asian mythology in what amounts to a notable campaign, it follows the game play of the grand-daddy of its style of game: Diablo 1 and 2. Best of all, you can get the gold version (core + expansion) on Amazon for less than $7.
