I find it difficult to like Kimi Raikkonen, help me understand. by oh84sin formula1

[–]Mulsanne 22 points23 points ago

Were you watching the sport when he came up? I feel like that is part of it for me. When he came up he was soooo young and sooo inexperienced. I think he'd barely competed in any races before jumping into F1. I went and looked it up and yeah, just 23 car races before F1. The dude practically went from karting, to a spec formula series to F1 in no time at all. Seriously he was driving karts in 1999 and F1 in 2001. Insane. He was so inexperienced they almost didn't grant him a super license.

So from that angle he was someone to watch, an oddity and a new Finn (I came into the sport loving Mika). Then he scored points in his first ever race and was immediately fast. After just 1 year he jumped to McLaren, which is also rare, and he was quick again.

It's hard to say for sure but for me the way he came up so fast and so young like that was really something to me at the time. In a way he heralded a new era of F1 of young guns entering the sport. It used to be that F1 drivers arrived in the sport when they were mid 20s and up. Senna was 24, Prost was 25, Jackie Stewart was 25, Mansell was 27...you get my drift. With Kimi he was just 21 and then we had, Alonso was 22 and finally Vettel who was 20. He marked the start of the shift towards teams looking for younger talent and not being afraid to put the guys in the cars with comparatively little experience. Nobody had less experience before F1 than Kimi though.

Finally, I just want to say that it's perfectly fine for you not to like a driver for any reason.

The illusions don't work in most of these as the angles are all wrong. It's still a cool video, but it really starts strong and works backwards from there, unfortunately.

Don't we all: McLaren hope error woes are in the past by iamstandingbehindyouin formula1

yeah I was gonna say...I'm pretty sure their rivals aren't hoping that. And neither are the people who don't root for them.

...it's a silly headline.

Likewise. I miss him on the grid for sure, and it would have been spectacular if he led Williams back from the wilderness.

how I'd completely ruined their game. Now I burn in shame every time someone mentions the sport.

It's reallllly not a big deal dude. Not that big, anyway. I've had some people "try to be helpful" to me before, and I just laugh about it. Nothing to be ashamed of and those dudes overreacted if they were angry and chasing you.

After looking through some history of F1 cars I got to thinking, how much horsepower did a car like this have? by louis_xiv42in formula1

[–]Mulsanne 0 points1 point ago

I like it a lot! That's a really useful breakdown and I love how all the info is presented. When I went searching for some rules from that time period, I thought it might be difficult to track down, but was glad when I saw you guys had it covered.

Formula One is quite determined to be as unpredictable as possible. by LouWatersin formula1

To be honest all I remembered that 2008 was wet and Hammy won through interesting circumstances...I had to wiki to be sure and to get 2nd and 3rd :P

2008 started wet but dried out. Hamilton won despite having an early puncture. Kubica finished 2nd, Massa 3rd.

I don't know when the last truly wet race was, though.

LA really laid into Sederstrom over this nonsense. I didn't see it, I'm listening on radio, but as ever LA let him have it.

Great video!

It's amazing how close together they all are. It was only by the end that the gaps became really obvious and even then...man it's so close at the front of the grid.

ehhh...I don't buy it dude. Tree trunks aren't that much softer than stone. Plus, it's so far away!

At the very least, I am very well acquainted with the sort of damage that a hard throw into a tree can do. So maybe trees are less damaging than stone, but trees are definitely damaging.

Hypothetical situation,

Surely the trees would be a far more pressing concern, no?

I doubt the bridge, especially at that distance, could be any more damaging than trees.

That's pretty sweet. I was thinking of driving down to the circuit for this event. I went to the Ferrari days at Sears Point last year and it was a lot of fun. I snapped some cool shots there. The best bit was when I came back to the garage after the Ferrari Challenge race and there was practically nobody around the F1 cars. I could walk up/around/next to these cars with no barriers, and nobody to get in the way. It's not often you get to do that with F1 machinery!

This has got to be my favorite shot. I always loved the gills on the back of the F2007 and I tried to capture them with this shot. That event was definitely $20 well spent, but couldn't make it this year...
