[construction] Inductrack model Maglev train? by RepRap3din AskElectronics

[–]ModernRonin 3 points4 points ago

So I understand Halbach arrays are like one directional magnets

Not really. It's more like they're multiple magnets arranged so that the fields augment on one side and cancel on the other. You may be surprised by how much force it takes to cram the magnets together this way.

we're going to be making the track by wrapping Litz wire around it. What I don't understand is how this helps with induction currents? Litz wire is wire made of smaller wire, and the smaller wires are insulated from each other within the larger wire.

Same reason the core of a transformer is made of thin slices of steel instead of a solid steel donut. Eddy currents. You want to minimize these. The easiest way is to make the metal that you're inducing current in as thin as possible without increasing the resistance too much. Hence slices or thin wires.

However, doesn't soldering the ends together to make the loops short all the individual wires together?

Yes, but only at one place in the loop. Also, you want a large current to be flowing around the loop as a whole. Because the larger the current, the greater the magnetic field strength.

TL:DR How do induced magnetic fields work?

Miracles everywhere in this relativistic electrostatic bitch.

I've got a big magnet travelling down a rail. How do I induce the greatest magnetic fields?

You use as strong a magnet as you reasonably can. You get it as close to the loops as you reasonably can. You make the loops out of stuff that will minimize eddy currents as much as possible. You move the magnets past the loops at the optimal speed (usually pretty fast).

Do they need loops of conductive material?

Yes, they need to inductors. So loops are critical.

Isolated loops?

There are too many possible ways you might mean that to give a yes or no.

Long loops short loops?

The optimal geometry will depend heavily on the kind of and arrangement of magnets you plan to run past them. So there's no easy answer to that question.

Why does electricity appear blue? by progerialover69in explainlikeimfive

[–]ModernRonin 3 points4 points ago

Because blue-white is the closest visible color to ultraviolet. Most of the photons emitted by corona discharge are in the ultraviolet range, but humans can't see ultraviolet. So we only see the underachieving photons which fail to reach ultra-violetness. These "loser photons" appear blue-white to our (sadly limited) human eyes.

How does DDR3 RAM Keep up with processors that are 3* as fast ? by icy100in compsci

[–]ModernRonin 0 points1 point ago

If it's only a third the speed, that's actually ridiculously good compared to how bad it has been.

Indeed. Those of us who are old and cranky remember when we had to program 7 "wait states" into our BIOS for the RAM. "Wait states" were clock cycles where the CPU had to sit idle while it waited for the (sloooooooooowwwwwwwwwwww) RAM to return a byte of data it had asked for.

Re: TV thing.

You may want to listen to this: http://www.theamphour.com/2011/09/12/the-amp-hour-60-pancyclopaedic-prototyping-polymath/

This was a guy who was on the Discovery channel show "Prototype This" and it wasn't entirely a pleasant experience for him.

I realize most of this will be deadly boring to you. A bunch of nerds talking about transistors - is there anything more snore-inducing? But stick with it for the parts where he talks about being on a TV show.

On that note: I would urge you to go for it. I would love to see you on TV! But I just want you to walk in with your eyes wide open to the possibilities, both good and bad. There's a lot of potential for both.

Lastly: Always, always throw down the money for the couple hours worth of face time with a lawyer, to have them read through any contract you might be thinking about signing and explain all of it to you in detail. Lawyer shit is not easy, and the devil is in the details. "Decide in haste, repent in leisure" and all that.

ELI5 How horsepower works. by Theopocalypsein explainlikeimfive

[–]ModernRonin 1 point2 points ago

Horsepower, in an automotive context, is basically just twisting force that has been divided by RPM.

So, if you twist strongly but not very fast... low HP.

Or if you twist fast but not very strongly... low HP.

Twist fast and hard at the same time... high HP.

Technically HP is a measure of energy, or work. But when it comes to cars, the above description is a lot more real-world accurate.

In your thousand horses example, the horses win because they have more friction. All their hooves digging into the ground easily overpower the car's very small contact patches where the tires touch the road. To make the test more "fair", you should hook both the car and the thousand horses up to a big weight, and see how fast they can drag it up a steep hill. It takes energy to drag things uphill. How fast you can drag a heavy object up a big hill is a decent measure of how much energy you can throw down.

ELI5: What did Star Wars Galaxies do that pissed people off? by aschesklavein explainlikeimfive

[–]ModernRonin 1 point2 points ago

A) It wasn't fun. I mean REALLY wasn't fun. Massive grind, even by MMORPG standards.

B) It was really hard to become a Jedi and get a lightsaber. Which is all that 99% of people wanted out of a Star Wars game.

ELI5: Why do cats get high on catnip (but humans do not)? by HorFinatOrin explainlikeimfive

[–]ModernRonin 0 points1 point ago

For the same reason that viagra doesn't make cats horny, but does to humans.

We're fundamentally different from cats. They have certain kinds of chemical receptors in their brains, and we have certain kinds in ours. Some of the receptors are the same between cats and humans. Some are not.

Catnip is one of the different ones.

If light has no mass, than how can it be sucked into black holes? by the-best-person-everin explainlikeimfive

[–]ModernRonin 0 points1 point ago

Light has no mass, so it can't be slowed down. (Though it does have energy, so it can be doppler shifted as its energy is drained away.)

But light can have its direction changed by gravity. Or by the curvature of space-time, take your pick. Tow-may-toh, tah-mah-toe, let's call the whole thing off.

That's all a black hole is doing. It's continuously changing the direction of light shooting by it. Light that's farther away from black holes is only bent or curved a little bit. But some light gets so close that the direction change is into tighter and tighter inward spirals into the black hole. Light that gets that close will never escape. (Just like everything else that gets too close to a black hole...)

Democrats are only anti-war when the president is Republican.

And vice-versa, sadly. There's no integrity in either major political party.

Are democrats pro-war now? by Prerequisitein Libertarian

I always thought they were very anti-war, now my most liberal friends talk about the 'good' of America's wars.

They're fucking morons. They have no actual principles. Only a blind, slovenly, sheep-like need to follow the rest of the herd.

People like those are why I no longer call myself a Democrat. Now I am simply a "liberal with libertarian leanings." I refuse to enslave my mind to any political party's ridiculously obvious hypocrisy.

Clips and Magazines. by spencerawrin guns

[–]ModernRonin 4 points5 points ago

The easy way to remember it is that a clip is like a paper clip. It holds the bullets together by friction. For example.

A magazine, on the other hand, is a small box made of sheet metal or plastic, with a coil spring inside to push the bullets out. See here.

This isn't quite a 100% technically correct definition, but it's good enough to tell the difference about 98% of the time.
