Does anybody have a list of "official scriptures" on the Church's past? by Denommusin exmormon

[–]Mithryn 1 point2 points ago

Just in my head.

I think it could be useful to have a timeline. Brings up that the first Vision wasn't part of scripture (or really even known) until 40 or so years after Joseph's death (1880).

I've tried to put together a "translation and revelation" timeline:

http://www.xtimeline.com/timeline/Book-of-Mormon-Translation-Timeline

But I haven't had time to put in when various books were cannonized.

Trading his wife for yours is grounds for disfellowship, even if lawfully divorced, etc.

He would know this, probably having disfellowshipped others for it. The likelihood that he is "makin a move" is low.

But he may genuinely prefer your wife to you for conversation.

That being said, I think asking for an interview and quoting to him all the talks about "Avoiding the appearance of evil" and asking him to read out of Alma 42 ("She deceived the hearts of many, but that was no excuse for you, my son") and David and Bathsheba would probably win you the "Best Conversation with a Bishop" Brodie award for the year if you so desired.

His face would be priceless, when you read scripture after scripture and talk after talk about avoiding temptation, etc.

Ah yes, Good 'ol Bishop Snow. Never convicted of course, which according to my mormon lawyer friend, means he was innocent.

sigh.

Which General Authorities do you think are knowingly perpetrating what they know to be a religous fraud? by JehuLovein exmormon

[–]Mithryn 1 point2 points ago

Packer knows that the system is there to get promoted.

Hinkley knew about Mark Hoffman's writings and hid them.

Oaks knew about Mark Hoffman's writings and gave a talk to hide them.

Monson and Hinkley conspired together to take over the church while Bensen was ill. That says volumes.

Ballard gives too many talks about "keeping covenants without looking into things" and spoke to freely about Nemelka being a nutcase for me to think he actually believes in Joseph.

Those are the ones I'm certain have more knowledge, but hide it away in favor of their sales positions.

How to handle this.... by throwaway123454321in exmormon

Made your bed, now you have to lie in it.

1) Don't drink coffee on the job.

2) When the conversation turns to mormon things, you can always bring up a mission experience if you want to keep up the pretext

3) I'd be frank about it if asked. Oh yeah, I totally believed when I was younger, but now I have a broader world view. If you'd like to know more of what I studied, I'll provide you some links (Mormonthink.com)

Mormons almost NEVER take you up on the offer, and will avoid finding out what a "broadened view" means. But the drops of discussions of you studying the JoD or mentioning what was said last sunday are enough to convince them that you are one of them.

(This was my survival plan for a year and a half or so, and it worked very well).

Now, I'm pretty upfront, though, and so far; professionally, except for douche-bags, it doesn't matter.

What exactly do you mean?

Like the book of Commandments (Pre 1835), 1835 Doctrine and Covenants, and the 1890 Doctrine and convenants?

Or that the PoGP wasn't added as scripture until 1880?

A lack of conviction doesn't mean innocence either.

If a man has 6 allegations of sexual harassment from 5 different women across 3 states, even if there is no evidence able to incriminate him, that doesn't mean one should treat him as an innocent when he asks to take a late night stroll with your daughter.

But I'm not sure I ever called Quenton a fraud. I think I said there were allogations of fraud, and then you asked for the source, and I provided.

Then I tried to explain it as best as I could from what I had read there as well as some of the surrounding newspaper articles. I'd love to go into the legal end, but that's not my specialty. I became excited to find someone who had some expertise and I'm happy to be wrong and know that Quentin is really on solid ground...

but all you've provided is the statement "I'm a lawyer" and your opinion. On the internet that's not worth a lot. So I asked for something to back up your claims, and you (admittedly a very lawyerish thing to do) claimed you charge $300 an hour for such research.

So I'm asking you to back up 1) your claim you are a lawyer, and 2) your claim that lawyers become CEO's all the time after working on cases.

I've worked at a lot of companies, not a single one had a lawyer CEO. I've worked WITH a lot of companies, not a single one had a lawyer CEO.

Really, I've never heard of a Lawyer becoming a CEO after a case.

The specific cases similar to Quentin's we can probably skip... just looking for you to back up your claims.

Now I'm having visions of erotic Mass Effect/Harry Potter crossovers.

Garrus: Hermione, this can never be...

Hermione: Garrus, honestly, I love Shepard, ever since he used that paragon interrupt.

Garrus: Let's make out one more time before you go...

Hermoine's wand glows softly, and gently as she points it towards Garrus with a slight raising of her hand.

Hermione: Turian Errectus!

I think your willingness to accept that you and other lawyers should try to get cases dismissed without looking into merit disproved the book ok Mormon. Namely that Zeezrom had a conscience.

$300 an hour, go fuck yourself.

And finally, burden of proof on me... Well then I'll link you when I post my compiled list of fraud allogations of church leaders through time... Free of charge.

Shepard wakes up from choosing the three choices still next to Anderson. He really just passed out.

The Reapers have wiped out all the fleets, and earth has fallen. Then Shepard destroys the citadel and mass effect relays and everyone on every other system. This is shown in excruciating detail, including Shepard dying.

Everything dies.

Cut to Old man and son. Son says "Tell me another story about the Shepard". Old man says "You're not depressed enough to commit suicide yet?"

The son then shoots himself.

Also, if I found out there was an appeal on the case, and that the previous judge's ruling was thrown out, would you admit that the case was then fishy?

because all you have to do is basically say "Your honor, the statue is five years and the case is 7 years old."

Okay, the claimants in the case are saying there is no statute of limitations on cases including public lands. Are they wrong?

I know this stuff happens all the time, mostly with hospitals and schools, and sometimes it is controversial and sometimes it is not.

As a lawyer, I assume you have vastly superior knowledge and resources for citing individual cases.

That is what I'm askign for here. Not that I shouldn't just believe you because you claim to be a lawyer, but I'd like some actual cases. Otherwise, my skepticism has to be that you're not really a lawyer, and just someone defending a position.

It would be impossible to know how common the resolution was without doing a broad survey of all of the cases.

Hence why I asked.

But, it does not really matter because each case is handled differently and if the statute of frauds bars the case, it will almost certainly be invoked.

No, I think it does matter. I think seeing precedent for this type of action in an actual case would be very beneficial to me. In addition, if the precedent is something different, it strengthens the case that something was wrong/out of the ordinary here.

As for your hinting that the case was improperly dismissed, that is what appeals are for. Statutes of fraud appeals are relatively easy because the statute of frauds does not involve a lot of judicial discretion. If the statute applies the judge must dismiss, if the statute does not apply, he/she cannot. If the dismissal was improper, it almost certainly would have been appealed.

Are you actually saying that a lack of an appeal filed is evidence of no corruption, but that a Lawyer getting a CEO job in an unrelated field is not evidence of corruption.

You confuse me. Please, provide me with sources and documents to support your credibility. Right now I'm feeling that you're mostly apologetic with a bit of law, instead of the other way round.
