The Thing I Honestly Never Thought Would Happen (Possible NSFW?) by LadySerenityin atheism

[–]MadmanPoet 1 point2 points ago

Christianity gave me a sense of superiority and due to the particular branch of Christianity I was in, I believed that humans could have super powers based on their faith (prophecy, healing, et al). I pushed away a lot of people that probably would have been great friends if I hadn't been such a dick to them.

Now, I have more friends, I am less quick to judge, I don't walk into a room with a sense of moral superiority, and when confronted with a problem, I deal with it instead of hoping God-given-jujube will save me.

My Biggest Problem with r/Atheism. What Do You Think? by LetsDebateBigfootin AskReddit

[–]MadmanPoet 0 points1 point ago

The education isn't for the Fundies being debated. It is for other Atheists. If I post a screen shot from my FB wall where I site contradicting bible verses or uncover someone else's flawed logic and someone on r/atheism reads it, the next time they are having to defend their lack of faith, they will have a tick more to use.

Sure, it looks like a bunch of Baby-eaters sitting around saying "Cristans r stoopid!" but only if you are on the outside looking in. My Kung Fu school looks like a bunch of people learning to fight from the outside. From the inside it's more that that.

A great deal of r/atheism is indeed a bunch of circlejerkery, sure. But look deeper. Every post that quotes one of our thinkers, every rage comic that depicts an encounter, every over used meme (aka every meme), every facebook screen shot is part of a support network. It is a shared education.

Yeah, I've seen similar ones around. This one was metal... I don't know, bronze? Pretty well tarnished from the weather. The lamp was already in its hands, but I lit it.

Is my girlfriend faking having pancreatic cancer? by isthereadoctorplzin AskReddit

[–]MadmanPoet 0 points1 point ago

Depending on how dark she is, you may still see some yellowing in the skin; though mostly in the eyes. She should also be nauseous and depressed. Also, no amount of drinking is going to numb that kind of pain. And, of course the final symptom, if she isn't taking any treatments she should also be dead soon.

On an unrelated note: why did you need a TL;DR for a three word post? It wasn't that long. I muddled through.

I just discovered it. I think I am half way through the first season, easily one of the funniest shows ever.

Is my girlfriend faking having pancreatic cancer? by isthereadoctorplzin AskReddit

[–]MadmanPoet 2 points3 points ago

I had a very close friend die of pancreatic cancer. She should be suffering intense abdominal pains, fatigue, and pretty rapid weight loss (due to her complete loss of appetite and intense pains whenever she does eat). Now, the above she should be able to fake when ever it is convenient, but she should also be developing some pretty persistent jaundice. If she isn't yellowing at the eyes or general skin tone, she is faking and you should probably distance yourself from her.

TL;DR: If the bitch ain't yellow, then ditch her, good fellow.

How are the Hindu / Advaita concept of Brahma different from the Buddhist view of enlightenment? by Treefingers7in Buddhism

[–]MadmanPoet 2 points3 points ago

There is a reason that Buddhism and Hinduism share a lot of similar ideas and practices. They share a similar origin. Before Sidhathra reached Enlightenment, he was a devotee of the early Vedics. From these teachings and mystic traditions came what we know of as Hinduism. Now, sometime after the Buddha had died, Vedicism (Hinduism) kinda "reabsorbed" the Buddha as another incarnation of Vishnu, of which there are many. However this does not keep Buddhism from being considered heresy in many parts of the Hindu world. Buddhism rejects the worship of gods, rejects the idea of castes, and focuses on the idea of the self as being empty. I've had a few rocks thrown at me in the past.

A few clarifications by vistascanin Buddhism

[–]MadmanPoet 0 points1 point ago

Anger has little to nothing to do with resisting the "knocks of life" (a phrase that I think I am going to have to steal). Just as you can be angry about a situation without doing anything about it, you can do something about a situation without being angry.

Also, a meditative practice isn't about rising above emotions, more like learning to control them rather than they control you. You learn to understand your emotional reaction's dependent arising, looking further you perceive the emptiness of that emotion through which you learn to detach. You still have the emotion, sure. Buddhism isn't about becoming cold and emotionless, it is about seeing reality.

When a hot girl at a party asks if I want to see her room. by memorygardensin funny

[–]MadmanPoet 5 points6 points ago

It's about a young soldier leaves the Mexican War and goes to live as a hermit and a fur trapper in the Rockies. He makes some good friends and some really bad enemies, like the entire Crow tribe wants his scalp, but they weren't expecting a man with his level of Boss-ness. It is seriously an awesome movie.
