Police detain 400 anti-capitalist protesters in Frankfurt on Friday for defying a ban on demonstrations against austerity policies by pool92in worldnews

Americans assume all politicians are bought. How could it be antithetical way?

The funny thing is that I'm totally not an "I love America" kind of guy. I just thought it would be a popular design. I'm sort of embarrassed to show it off, to be honest!

Kala ukulele had a "design a Ukadelic" contest back in October, and I was one of the winners. They just started shipping them, and I was excited and thought I'd share.

I actually submitted a number of designs, but this was the one they chose. I also had a Steampunk design which they are interested in, but there were apparently some production hurdles that they haven't figured out.

Any recommendations for ukes? by vaderprimein ukulele

As others have said, it all depends on your price range. At the low end, the Islander series from Kanilea is a great choice. In mid-range, take a look at Mainland or Pono. At the upper end, any of the Hawaiian K-brands, or a custom builder.

My brain can also do transmission repair and proctology, but I can only devote a certain amount of time to things, so I choose carefully. It would be a great skill to add someday, though, and I've already got a training app on my iPhone, so maybe I'll get there at some point.

That's exactly what I was wondering about. That looks like a very nice radio, exactly what I was looking for—alas, out of my meager budget, but something to remember.

Thanks for the link!

fldigi sure didn't work on my Mac running Lion. All of the text was upside down!

Edit: I downloaded an earlier build and it works fine. What an awesome toy! I had my iPhone playing morse code, and fldigi had no problems decoding at 50 WPM. Is there any way to have it attempt to identify a digital transmission mode automatically?

It should be a basic grammar test. The remaining 500 people would have to repopulate.

Kala KA-KC, a gift from my wife after we got married in Hawaii. Still my favorite over my Kamaka and Big Island. :)

Concerning firearms... by JasonBenthamin EDC

[–]MacMonkey 0 points1 point ago

Just a reminder for those who may be considering a firearm but aren't familiar with them—the shorter the barrel, the less accurate the gun will be. That means if you're going to use your firearm in a hurry (as you likely will should you ever need it), you will need to be pretty darn close to your target to be accurate.

The NYPD did a study and claimed that most civilian shootings were within a distance of 10–11', so it likely doesn't matter, but it's something to consider.

How about just rinsing your mouth with a little baking soda mixed with water to neutralize the acids? Or eat some alkaline foods.

Questions for the Elmers by MacMonkeyin amateurradio

[–]MacMonkey[S] 0 points1 point ago*

This is an excellent question. The reality is that they had a ton of things to do before they left on their trip, and although they tried to research this stuff a bit, it's very hard to find all of the answers you need in one location. They saw SailMail, but being Mac people they figured they'd find a good Mac solution before they left. No such luck.

Also keep in mind that my friend got her General license all of about a week before they left, so she wasn't even sure what to look for. She hit up some hams in her area, but she got the impression that they weren't taking her very seriously, possibly because she was a girl and had no practical knowledge yet. She said the attitude she was getting was that there was "no such thing as a free lunch" and she should learn the stuff on her own. :(

Questions for the Elmers by MacMonkeyin amateurradio

[–]MacMonkey[S] 0 points1 point ago

I can certainly get my General license if required, just want to make sure I'm not wasting my time first. :)

Is there any way to know which bands are better for which locations short of trial and error? You said 20M seems like the best bet.

I'm located in Colorado near Boulder, and my friends are currently off Key West and slowly moving south.
