The real paradox of this situation is you’re under the impression that if you hide your size and can get him to like you first, then he may be able to overlook your weight, which is absolutely not the case for men.

However, the reverse is actually true. A woman is often willing to overlook a guy’s size if he wins her over first. And yet men are up front with all the pictures, figuring women think just like they do, and aren’t ever able to overlook size.

So both sexes get it wrong, figuring the other thinks like they do.

It's sick, but that is a lot of dissonance to deal with--going through life every day knowing you're an okay person and at the same time knowing people fear and distrust you. It has to collapse in one direction or the other. Either you're wrong about yourself or they're wrong about you. He chose the former and sugarcoated it with a "care for others."

The Nikon D4 is now official by nsolarzin photography

[–]Lucent 52 points53 points ago

For those of us who e-mailed Nikon every couple years to suggest this feature, it's finally happening:

However shooters using zoom lenses, or worried about camera shake rather than freezing the action, may prefer a minimum shutter speed that relates to the focal length in use, rather than specifying an absolute figure. This has been resolved on the D4, with an Auto ISO system that detects the lens’ focal length. When this is activated by setting the minimum shutter speed to 'Auto', the user can then also bias the program towards using slower shutter speeds and lower ISOs, or faster shutter speeds and higher ISOs, in five steps.

Ptable.com isn't technically an app yet but you can add it to the homescreen and it's rotation aware.

YSK why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love by annamesein YouShouldKnow

[–]Lucent 13 points14 points ago

I ran an experiment for a month. It was as subtle and friendly as it could be and offered an alternative. Not only that, you could even hide the donation suggestion.

Total failure. Two donations from literally a hundred thousand ad blockers.

I came to the conclusion that ad blocking is a fundamentally antisocial behavior. Site creators are often individuals, too, and regardless of how technologically abstracted it is, your relationship with that site creator is the consumption of their resource with the simultaneous rejection of their implied contract. I make no commentary about the wrongness of ad blocking, simply that it's an antisocial behavior. My donation message specifically to ad blockers removed some of the abstraction and served as a reminder that I was a person, too, and was okay with their blocking, but they were welcome to donate if they wanted to

Confronted with the dissonance of their actions, some flew off the handle and sent hate mail when I'd previously gotten none. I also got downvotes on StumbleUpon. It ended up not being worth it to solicit donations from those who already rejected one exchange. Now I just leave those people alone.

Why don't people tell it like it is? by MungoBroin amiugly

[–]Lucent -1 points0 points ago*

You may think you're being helpful or positive by offering overly generous feedback to the ugly, but what you're actually doing is confusing them.

Society isn't friendly, forgiving, or tolerant to the ugly. Some of these posters have probably gone through life ignored, shunned, and looked down on and they come here to see if maybe, maybe they're actually a decent person and all this poor treatment is just due to their appearance.

And what do we do? "Oh you look fine! Just lose a little weight and cut your hair!" And they feel good for a moment. Then the nagging question that brought them here in the first place slowly weasles back into their mind after the temporary high. "If it's not my appearance, am I just an undesirable person to be around?"

When you tell an ugly person they're not ugly, you're actually telling them the raw deal they seem to be getting in life is due to their personality. The pressure to "be constructive" is what's actually harmful. If someone's truly ugly and fashion tips won't save them, then the constructive thing to do is to tell them they're ugly.

BBC Question - AIU? Are You Ugly? by bbcemmain amiugly

[–]Lucent 2 points3 points ago

We're already judged on our looks every moment of our lives. It seems the point of this community is more to tease out in what direction and in what amount our appearance is skewing those interactions.

We already know if we're quickly liked or often thought creepy or whatever. What we want to know is how much of that is just due to the halo effect, positive or negative, and how much is due to the person we've actually become.

Why are some elements state of matter unknown at higher temperatures? by Krednsin askscience

[–]Lucent 1 point2 points ago

The reason 97-103 switch from solid to unknown is because the melting point is known but not the boiling point. Below their melting point, it's known they're solid. Above, it's not known if they're liquid or gas, since the boiling point could theoretically be infinitesimally higher.
