The big issue I have with this project is it doesn't even look like they've made basic game design decisions yet. Depending on what funding milestone they hit, the game could be a 2-player coop game, a 4-player coop game, or a 4v4 competitive PvP game. I expect stretch goals to include previous milestones as alternate game mode, but there's a big difference between a game optimized for 2-player coop, versus a game that was optimized for 4-player coop and has 2-player coop thrown in. (Anyone who has tried playing Left 4 Dead's couch coop can attest to this.)

I don't mind having a game's scope defined by stretch goals--more money means more levels, more classes, more weapons, and the like--but fundamental game design choices should be made ahead of time. The fact that they haven't made such a fundamental game design choice at this point really speaks to the amount of planning that's gone into this project on the game development side of things (i.e. not much).

What's your favourite Andrew W.K. songs that aren't from I Get Wet? by Hatecin AndrewWK

[–]Kuiper 1 point2 points ago

Lyrically, I think that Totally Stupid is my favorite song; I feel like it really embodies the spirit of Andrew WK and everything he believes in. The one lyric that I really found myself chewing on was "Would you give up all you want / To keep the things you got / And would you give up all you got / To get the things you want." Thinking about this made me realize that, as Andrew says, "All the things we want are here." It really inspired me to begin living in the moment. Do I still have dreams and aspirations and ambitions for the future? Absolutely. But there is joy to be found in the world around us, and it's important not to lose sight of that.

Musically, Party Party Party from ATHF is a fun song. Tear it Up is classic Andrew WK "wall of sound" and it's also got some fun lyrics. I also like a lot of his j-pop covers, especially Kiseki and Little Love Song.

I hope Fire Emblem 13 gets a US release. I know that an English-language European release is already confirmed, but due to DS region locking, I can't import a copy (unless I also want to import a foreign 3DS to play it on).

I'm still disappointed that Fire Emblem 12 never saw English release, at least the DS is region-free so it was possible to play the game with a translation guide.

The Vita and 3DS versions were also released in 2012. Looking at this thread, it almost seems a bit surreal to me that a single game was released for six different platforms in the span of one year.

Unfortunately these titles are only playable if you have a PS2 or a backwards-compatible PS3 (one of the earlier models), since they're not available as download titles. Hopefully Atlus will release them on PSN later the same way they did with Persona 3 FES.

Zekrom EX is too high cost for too little payoff, he's too much of a liability and not worth a deck spot in my opinion.

Uh, maybe you might enjoy Jane Austen? Try reading Pride and Prejudice. Here's a free copy.

As for manga, Genshiken is a wonderful slice of life series. The first omnibus collection was just released; I think Barnes and Noble is selling it for $13 right now which is a pretty good deal for 3 volumes of manga. If you want a long-running shounen slice of life type story, Bakuman is entertaining; it's about two boys who create manga for Shounen Jump. (There are some romantic underpinnings, although the love interest is a pretty minor character throughout the story.) I get the feeling you'd also like Chihayafuru and Hotarubi no Mori e. Onani Master Kurosawa is just wonderful too.

Oh, can't you also watch anime on your device? I know that Funimation and Crunchyroll have Android apps available.

Have you considered reading conventional novels (and possibly non-fiction books)? You'd certainly have a a wider selection of reading material, especially since the Kindle store is available via Android. That being said, sometimes paperbacks can be cheaper than buying via Kindle, example, the Mistborn trilogy on Kindle is $23 while Amazon is selling the paperback box set for under $17. Incidentally, the Mistborn boxed set is a great bang for your buck in terms of content; it's a fantasy epic that outclasses the Lord of the Rings trilogy for length. Other personal favorite authors include Neal Stephenson (Snow Crash is a fun read) and Orson Scott Card (Ender's game is a classic, and the Ender's Shadow series is even more thrilling).

On the subject of "novels worth reading," here's a list of all books that won both the Hugo and Nebula award the year they were released. Anyone who considers themself a fan of sci-fi or fantasy should read every book on that list at some point in their life.

If you want non-fiction books that make you feel smart for reading them, there is always Malcolm Gladwell's library. Freakonomics is another one of those "makes you feel smart" books that anyone can pick up and read.

If you want to read books for free without resorting to piracy, Project Gutenberg is a collection of works that have entered the public domain, and you'll find the works of a lot of long-dead authors available there, including Jane Austen, Mark Twain, Arthur Conan Doyle, Charles Dickens, among countless others. (A lot of these authors' works are also available for free via the Kindle store.) Or, if you want to read contemporary authors for free and legally, you can visit a library.

Alternatively, you could load some GBA or SNES emulators onto your Android, as both platforms have a plethora of excellent JRPGs available. If you've never had the chance to play Chrono Trigger, Golden Sun, Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, or Tactics Ogre, now's as good a time as any. Tactics Ogre probably deserves special mention for being a bit VN-like with its branching story. (Do note that acquiring GBA ROMs legally is a bit tricky, as it requires special hardware to dump the game file from the cart.)

[–]Kuiper 5 points6 points ago

Ditch the Emolga, Druddigon, Plusle, Minun, Pikachu, and Raichu. You can probably also get by without the Cleffa. Also, get rid of Cilan and Jim & Cas.

I recommend four copies of Juniper and PONT, and at least three copies of N. Consider dropping the Sage's Training, since 11 draw supporters may be enough.

You can replace the Pokemon Collector with Dual Balls, which makes for a more efficient search engine, and allows you to play Random Receiver (1-2 copies of Random Receiver should be fine.) Also, replace the Communication and Great Ball with Ultra Ball and possibly an extra copy of Dual Ball.

Replace potion with Eviolite. Actually, you probably want multiple copies of Eviolite.

Add an Eelektrik, and consider increasing your Tynamo count.

Pluspower, Skyarrow Bridge, and Smeargle are cards you might want to make room for. (A single copy of Smeargle should suffice.)

Add as many copies of Junk Arm and Catcher as your budget allows. Junk Arm is currently overpriced (and out of stock) on trollandtoad, you can probably find it cheaper from individual secondhand sellers. If you're having trouble tracking down a reasonably-priced one I might have an extra playset to trade/sell.

If you need to cut out cards to make room for anything, you can take out lightning energy. You probably don't need more than 10 lightning energy or so.

Bad Luck Japan by NateVarmacin AdviceAnimals

[–]Kuiper 0 points1 point ago

I think the west tends to be largely ignorant of events in far east Asia, largely due to how removed (both geographically and culturally) we are. I'm amazed how many of my peers (American young adults) are unaware of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, which for some of them is an event that occurred during their lifetime.

Bad Luck Japan by NateVarmacin AdviceAnimals

[–]Kuiper 1 point2 points ago

For the past few years, the Japanese government's Agency for Cultural Affairs has spent millions of dollars on the Young Animator Training Project, which is spent creating short anime films with the intent of training young animators on the job. The main rationale for this is that anime is considered a major part of Japanese culture, but large portions of anime production (mostly grunt work of non-key frames/interpolation) is being outsourced to countries like Malaysia and India.

Durant Deck by cathemeralin pkmntcg

[–]Kuiper 1 point2 points ago

Junk Arm is one of the most important cards in this deck, you need a fourth copy for sure. I recommend that you cut out a Lost Remover to make room for it. In the event that you need to play Lost Remover more than twice in a game, Junk Arm is your third Lost Remover. In other situations, it's an extra Crushing Hammer or Revive when you need it.

If you're going to play Collector, max out on it. You want to maximize your chances of a turn 1 Collector. You can ditch the Alph Lithograph to make room for it. Once you get the hang of Rotom, Alph Lithograph becomes largely unnecessary. Check out this article by Jason Klaczynski for a more detailed analysis. Also, in a tournament setting you are legally allowed to take notes, so it's not necessary to memorize each and every one of your prizes.

I think the Battle City is mainly there to be used in conjunction with Rotom. Ditto for Victory Medal.

Rants and Discussion Questions! by ElderMasonin pkmntcg

[–]Kuiper 1 point2 points ago

I feel like I'm remembering failure more than success. Is this a newbie thing? How do you deal with failure in the TCG?

I think it's most important to note that losing != failure, especially when playtesting. Sirlin has a more detailed article on this subject. Your playtesting should not look like your tournament play. If your playtesting is indistinguishable from your actual tournament play, you might want to revise your playtesting methods! Probably the most concrete example of this is that it's generally best to begin playtesting with the most consistent build possible, including thick lines of your main attackers and spending less room on techs. Over time, you become more aware of how the deck operates, which cards you can get away with playing fewer copies of, and exactly which cards are necessary in what amounts, and by the time nationals comes up you're teched and loaded and know your deck inside and out. I wouldn't expect most Durant players to run Mewtwo EX, but you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't at least try Mewtwo EX + DCE in playtesting.

Whenever I begin playtesting a new deck, I tend to have a negative win ratio, and this much is to be expected. My losses aren't failures; they are learning experience. The goal by the end of the season is to have a positive win ratio, but I can't achieve that without practice.

Now over at r/games and r/gamernews we're lucky if we get 10 submissions a day.

There have been over 50 submissions to /r/games in the past 24 hours. I realize it's probably a bit more active now than it would be on a weekday, but 10 submissions per day is a bit of an exaggeration. Surely it gets at least twice that much traffic on a typical day.

/r/gamernews moves slower because, well, it's news. Not every day has a lot of worthwhile news items to report. If anything, my biggest complaint about game journalism is that big sites like Kotaku feel that they have to have 10+ updates per day even when nothing newsworthy is happening, so you have news items like "NOTCH INSULTED SOMEONE ON TWITTER" (no, seriously)
