Thinking about creating trails and an edible forest garden on a 5.3 acre plot near work.(not my land) by Libra30in GuerrillaGardening

As well as tax records, you can also try going to your local city hall with the address or location of the lot and try looking up the parcel information.

What commonly 'sexy' thing are you turned off or disgusted by? (NSFW) by Waltzinblackin AskReddit

[–]KiraOsteo 4 points5 points ago

Because I'm 5'3" and my boyfriend is 6', so occasionally I want to be closer to his height so he doesn't fold in half to kiss me.

Because they're pretty and I like the way they look.

Because they make me feel dressed up.

Because they don't hurt if worn for short distances. So if I'm walking to a car, walking to a restaurant, then walking to your place for a movie, it doesn't matter if I wear wedges or flats.

Daughters of Reddit! I'm a new Dad. What's your single best piece of "fathering" advice? by prosskin AskReddit

[–]KiraOsteo 0 points1 point ago

When she's young, don't be afraid to play with her. My dad never was much of one to play with dolls with me. I loved my dolls and did massive storytelling with them. Don't be afraid to ask her what happens next - little kids have really strong narratives going and just want someone to play along. It's okay that you don't have any idea where it's going, just go.

Also, there was a post a while back about science to do with kids. Do it. Robert Krampf was part of my childhood and a darn good part, too.

Read to her and be a ham. Put on silly voices, act out the parts, and let go and have fun. If she's giggling, it's good. Those were some of my favorite things my dad did when I was little.

On a more serious note, never threaten more punishment than you are willing to follow through on. Once I was fighting with my dad and I vividly remember him threatening to "pull me out of [homeschooling program] and make me go to public school where they'll put me in a box all day." I never got over how he was willing to ruin my life (as my family really emphasized education) because he was upset with me. We're not as close as I would like, and it's things like that which have hurt our relationship. I don't trust him like I want to.

Reading your replies in this thread, you're going to be an amazing dad. Go forth and you'll do well.

Good advice, but one addendum that I think is relevant to third-wave feminism.

Do not force her to be anti-feminine. If she hates legos, but wants a dress, buying her legos is just as bad as forcing a tomboy to get something pink. Provide a wide range of options and let her direct what appeals to her. Clear her of ideas that some things are for girls, some things are for boys, and let her know that if she wants to try it, it's for girls. Even Alanna wanted pierced ears.

Be certain to praise her for looking nice as well as being intelligent, working hard, taking on new challenges, mastering skills, etc. Knowing that family, who knows you better than anyone, feels that you're beautiful can help you stand up to outside interests pushing false insecurities.

I need saliva for the same reasons, but I just quietly spit it into my hand and rub it on, not spit onto him directly. It's less obvious.

What are your favorite things to do with friends that are cheap, easy and instantly fun? by Noedelin AskReddit

[–]KiraOsteo 0 points1 point ago

Variation for those of us who can't draw worth beans. :)

1) One person (or a pair) quietly decides on a scenario and pantomimes it to a group. 2) They then pick two random people, who must quietly decide what they think they saw, then continue to act it out. 3) Repeat until everyone has had a chance. Then tell what the original scene was.

It's a lot of fun to see the silly acting bits, then compare notes about what everyone was trying to act out!

LOVE this game. It's a fun way to spend time on the cheap.

If you want a variation and you have people who know each other well, try this: when you tag someone, you have to guess their eye color to make them "it". The way we played, you had to grab a hand to "tag" them, so you were allowed to use the hand to try to guess your tagger's identity.

Great afternoon fun, that was.

Awesome, thanks! I really want to make this; my bathroom has no counter space and my makeup is occupying the top of the toilet. :P

Hairstyles for social dancing? by KiraOsteoin beauty

I tried it, but it didn't stand up to vigorous dancing. Worked for ballroom, though.

I didn't realize Lisa did hairstyles, too. I've looked at her product reviews, but I'll have to check it out.

Do you have non-vintage recommendations, too? I love vintage, but I also dance WCS and that's definitely more modern. :)

I've done the no-heat curls with the band, but not the bun. I have layers and I think that it would get tricky fast. Thanks for the advice!

Late to this party but a question:

How do you like your makeup for travel/taking with you if you've glued magnets to the back? I want to make this board, but this is my main concern. Are they heavier/bulkier/harder to handle in a travel bag?

Found out my girlfriend has been cheating on me for the last 2 months, I've honestly never felt this low in my life, how do people deal with these kind of feelings? by s_dafuq_jin AskReddit

Also - block her on Facebook, remove her number from your phone, and cut off all other digital contact as well as physical. If you can, block her incoming calls to your phone, too.

I have gone through some miserable breakups. Nothing nearly as bad as yours, but trust me - this will help. You've got enough crap in your head, don't let reality shove her in your face again.

This will also prevent unfortunate messages that you will regret the next day.

Peace to you, my friend.

covering up a bruise before & after by mupandain MakeupAddiction

[–]KiraOsteo 4 points5 points ago

There are lots of ways to get facial bruises, and abuse is only one of them. Trust me: I'm clumsy and a martial artist. I've experienced most of the alternate ways. :P

I don't want to downplay the seriousness of abuse, but people immediately springing to my defense because I have bruises (has happened) is a little overkill. Ask first. Defend later.

What "amazing fact" or colloquialism do you know is actually wrong, and you're sick of correcting people about it? by TestZeroin AskReddit

Yeah. The level of ignorance is astounding. I really wish there was a more comprehensive level of evolution education in the US; I really think creationists would have a more difficult time being taken seriously if people actually understood how science and evolution work.

Cool factoid:

The word in the original translation just said "curved bone". Now, humans are one of the few placental mammals that lack a baculum, or curved penis bone. Some have suggested that "Adam's rib" might actually have been "Adam's baculum", which honestly makes more sense to me as something to create new life out of.

Bio anthro here.

I especially love trying to talk to people who say, "If we evolved from monkeys, why do monkeys still exist?"

Pardon me, I couldn't hear you over the sound of Darwin spinning in his grave.

I actually got into a tiff with an adult in a martial arts class about this. A young girl had been punched and had a light nosebleed. Being the only first-aid trained person on site at the moment, I had her tilt her head down. Interfering, non-trained parent ran over as soon as I left and had her tilt her head up.

Lots of single-syllable words later, parent finally stopped trying to correct my Red Cross training with her anecdotes. sigh

I especially love the psudeo-neuro follow-up of "Imagine what we could do if we used 100% of our brain all the time!" There's a scientific term for that: "seizure."

"The human body has got 206 bones in it. What's say we make it 207?"

Osteologist here. I know it's an allusion to a "boner" but the most commonly known animal with a penile bone (aka baculum) is the dog. Just sayin'...unless you're proposing bestiality, I'd shy away from that one.

Forever 21 Dupe of Naked palettes - your opinions? by KiraOsteoin MakeupAddiction

Wow, congrats! You're doing what you need to and being awesome.

I'm a year into an MA/Ph.D, with a research assistantship to fund my first few years. Luckily I have enough to live on, but only just. I get a little splurge now and then. No help from the family, either; they were awesome enough to put me through undergrad and I'm not taking anything from them now so they can help my grandma out.

Good luck!
