(nsfw) (physics) Physics of space-sex by Nillerzin askscience

[–]Justintoxicated 3 points4 points ago

Here's an interesting article on the possible dynamics of sex in space It's a very light read with some speculation.

A wiki article on sex in space

and this article mentions a confidential report at nasa on sexual dynamics in space.

I was unfortunately unable to find anything very conclusive on the matter but a few interesting tidbits.

[x/post] Hey Chefit i was just offered KM at my job. Any advice? by glenns1212in Chefit

[–]Justintoxicated 5 points6 points ago

1. Do not let them stick you on salary.

Salary to you means you get paid the same (sans bonuses) no matter how much you work. It means the same to the owners. This means they will expect you to be there all the time working ridiculous hours. I know one excellent chef in particular who did the math and realized the dishwashers were making more than him if you divide his pay/hours.

2. Friends before may not be friends after.

It's easy to be friends with people when you're on the line but if they're not very good employees at some point you will have to exercise your authority.

3. Be direct and clear. You're there to do a job, if it doesn't get done right you're the first person the owners will complain to. Remember it's a kitchen not a kindergarten, you're not there to nurture and respect feelings. Be clear and straightforward with what you expect.

4. If people do a good job tell them.

This is surprisingly often overlooked. Simply put if someone works hard and is doing a great job (or improving) tell them they did a good job and maybe get them a beer on the rare occasion. Don't do it all the time though or egos might start to clash.

5. Be weary of venders/suppliers.

Their job is to unload products on you. Some of them will see a guy who's new to the job and try to sell you on overpriced products you don't need or will try to dump less than fresh produce on you. Check all your deliveries and don't sign off until you're satisfied. Send stuff back that is no good, it pisses them off but teaches them not to try these games with you. Once suppliers know you're thorough and they can't sneak rotting lettuce passed you they won't try as often.

6. Deals, Deals, Deals

So you're in charge of food cost and specials, many KM's/Exec Chefs get bonuses based on food cost/labor cost so your goal is to minimize these things without hurting the food quality. Cultivate good relationships with your suppliers/venders always ask them what's in season with them and when deliveries come ask if they have any deals (sometimes you'll get deals like such as seasonal produce like berries they're trying to get rid of quick or say some fish accidentally got frozen overnight by their refrigeration unit but is otherwise fine.) Produce suppliers are always looking to get rid of something and you can get some insane discounts just to recoup something. If you know what you're doing you can make a killing on specials or cut the cost of a regular dish with no comparable difference in quality. Also soups, soups, soups these are money generating powerhouses that cost next to nothing to make.

7. Equipment breaks.

Don't freak out, just get through service and call your repair person.

Hopefully you'll find some of this useful. I was the same age when I took my first KM job also at a pub with a third floor just for events/banquets and can say pubs are a great place to start the management learning curve since half the customers are drunk.

Good luck and have fun!

Are there any cases of suicide in any living organism other than humans? and is there any scientific/evolutionary reason it occurs in humans? by mokimadnessin askscience

[–]Justintoxicated 471 points472 points ago

Yes other species do commit forms of suicide, one of the more well known instances are when whales intentionally beach themselves.

Here's a short Discovery article about animal suicide and human behavior

This Abstract is from a study on animal suicide sorry I could find the whole paper. *edit Thank you benjiii for finding and linking the whole paper.

This is a short article from softpedia about animal suicide

I realize these are not the most thorough sources but it should give someone space to build on.

*edit adding a few more things.

A Brilliant Madness - the story of a mathematical genius whose career was cut short by a descent into madness by Aschebescherin Documentaries

Watched this awhile back, been a fan of Nash for quite some time and it was really great to hear him talk about his condition and work straight from his own mouth.

TED and inequality: The real story by nerfballin news

[–]Justintoxicated 1 point2 points ago

I think the only reason that some people believed this story to be plausible is because of the Sarah Silverman incident a couple years ago. However in her case it was her token vulgarity that is part of her humor/charm that did not sit well with some groups of people. However they were very transparent about stating that the talk would not be posted (mostly because they believed it to be more vulgar than thought provoking).

With that said I have watched some pretty awful idiotic talks on TED (and a lot of really excellent thought provoking talks as well) which suggests the talk had some blatant partisan pandering with little argument to back it up. Also despite the fact that ad hominem arguments are hardly reliable I would like to point out that the Huffpost and Moveon communities are poorly moderated and known as reactionary with very little fact checking before publishing/sharing material and have a track record of publishing inaccurate stories.

Manny Pacquiao Banned From The Grove Over Gay Marriage Comments by kwansoloin news

[–]Justintoxicated 0 points1 point ago

I would like to point out that Pacquiao did not say that quote and the paper he was quoted in does not exist. Please people you must remember the Huffpost is loose consortium of bloggers that have very little to no fact checking standards before publication.

Manny Pacquiao never said that. Eviscerating a boxer over a non-existent quote. by ngamauin news

Good because I like Pacquiao, seems like a good guy who's had a very tough life. Now I can go back to hating Mayweather.

Elephant in the room - just found this gem from 2006, predicting the subprime crisis and how it would evolve. by jacobsn2in Economics

[–]Justintoxicated 13 points14 points ago

Galbraith predicted the housing bubble and many of the current economic issues as far back as the 1950's. He was very explicit in predicting the change of the US labor needs from more agriculture and textile to knowledge based labor. Most of these crisis were not a surprise to many economists but there is a pervasive culture of dine and dash capitalism in the US which many people choose to be willfully ignorant of to reap short term gains.

To all the chefs and cooks about to head into a shit storm of tickets, yelling, and the usual.. Happy fuckin Mother's Day! by djm4391in KitchenConfidential

I always liked doing Mother's Day brunches, make a couple fruit salad watermelon baskets and a slew of other easily coordinated dishes and charge 30 bucks a head. My margin would rule for the whole month of may after that.

The Wisdom of Slime - Would America’s highway system be better if it had been designed by mold? by DrJulianBashirin science

[–]Justintoxicated 16 points17 points ago

I remember this story awhile back about Japan using slime molds to plot out their new railway system. A rather interesting application in my opinion, then again I quite like any sort of biomimicry.
