That's exactly the kind of title this post did well in avoiding.

why call of duty isn't good: the death of tactics by emospartan911in gaming

[–]JudgeOrlok -1 points0 points ago

Sure there's no military tactics in there, but it's not meant to be a realistic experience. The combat is about quick reflexes and precise aim - rather similar to the old FPS games nostalgically upvoted to the front page. The enemies spawn continuously in most areas, making it impossible to take them out one at a time from behind cover. On higher difficulties, the game becomes extremely challenging - and fun. Calling this game the "death of tactics" is a moronic and hipster-ish move to gain popularity and views. Last time I checked, ARMA 3 was doing just fine on the road to release. You want a tactical FPS? Buy ARMA 1 and 2, or OF: Dragon Rising. COD has in no way damaged or impeded their development/release.

I'll be helping to feed and bathe them, and to keep them comfortable. What worries me is that some of them have "strong" personalities, sometimes becoming agitated and hostile - I'm not entirely sure how to deal with that (though, as you said, my coworkers will no doubt have some advice).

The description of "Journey" reminds me a little of the empathy boxes in "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"

I understand that Kane and Lynch are not shining examples of excellent characterization, but in the video game world, they are above and beyond the regular standard (though the story, I agree, is quite terrible).

I also resent the implication that I have not read any good books or seen any good films. Literature, films, and video games are entirely separate worlds, and one must adjust one's expectations accordingly.

False. The guys in Gears of War is what hack writers make when they try to create a "gritty" character. Take, for example, Kane reaction to his wife's execution, and him speaking to his dying daughter in the first game. The dialogue was heartfelt and genuine. His character was not portrayed as calloused and grim, but broken, and the writers did a damn good job.

I know the reviewers kicked the shit out of it (and the gameplay really does suck), but it was pretty awesome, in its own way. The voice acting and the dialog were fabulous, as was the music. The characters genuinely felt human, which is something not often encountered. Definitely worth a play through, even at full price.

Old Warfare: Bringing Honesty to Military Shooters by El_Murphoin Games

I think Modern Warfare 2 is somewhat under credited for this kind of gameplay. During the mission that starts out in DC, (playing as Ramirez, when you try to give the CASEVACs time to escape), I found myself strongly moved by what I saw - the soldiers around me were just staring blankly at the ground in front of them, all in almost total silence (markedly different from the usual incessant jargon heard throughout the game). When the order came to head up, into the raging battle above, there were no shouts of "HOO-AH" or "GET SOME!". Just a silent, almost distanced acceptance of what they had to do. The guy ahead of me just grabbed his gun, pulled himself to his feet and ran up into the trench. It was night, tracers and explosions were everywhere, and the whole thing seemed like suicide - which, of course, for the stream of reinforcements backing you up throughout this mission, it pretty much is. It was then that I realized I would find it difficult - almost impossible, in fact, to follow such an order. And the way those around me simply accepted it just really hit something inside me. It seemed like the developers had really made an effort to emphasize what one would feel, and how one would behave, right before being ordered into a deadly firefight.

Most of Modern Warfare 2 is the epitome of what's wrong with the attitudes of modern FPS games. But all the chapters with Sgt. Foley somehow transcended that - that scene where you're preparing to head into battle is one of the best I've encountered in any recent game.
