I hate the phrase "IRL cakeday" by celticmagnumin self

[–]Janus_Grayden 21 points22 points ago

I don't like it, but I can at least understand it. It's a simple way to say that it's your one year anniversary of signing up and a cake does show up next to your username.

While it is a little silly to make a celebration of it, internet communities have been doing it forever. It's not something that's specific to Reddit.

I've owned 2 HP laptops back to back. The first one lasted about 3 years and I only replaced it because I wanted better hardware, but mostly because someone cracked my screen in half.

I'm still on my other laptop and I use the crap out of it. It does get hot, but I've never had any problems with it.

I Was One Of Those Kids Who Always Took Cats Apart To See How They Worked by Mute2120in humor

[–]Janus_Grayden 1 point2 points ago

I was hoping this was going to go the classic "kid who grew up torturing animals becomes a serial killer" route. It would have been such an easy segue, too.

Beauty ideals, Then and Now by Naivain pics

Not only that, but being obese these days is a sign of being poor. Cheap foods tend to be much less healthy in terms of fats (think fast food). In addition, where poor people would predominately work the fields back then, today this isn't the case. We're mostly indoors all the time. If you're rich, you can afford gym memberships, personal trainers, and let's not forget liposuction.

Being thin is more difficult to maintain for the poor than it is for the rich.

I love it when this happens... by SuperXackin comics

A very popular, but unfortunately very wrong bit of misinformation. Carrots do not help you see in the dark.

The idea that they did was developed by the British to explain away their seemingly supernatural ability to detect enemy planes. The real reason, of course, was the invention of RADAR, but they couldn't have the Nazis knowing about their technological advantage, so they crafted and disseminated the carrot story to throw the Germans off the scent.

As we all know, it worked a little too well.

Subway rage (fixed on the fly) by retryfailin fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

[–]Janus_Grayden 2 points3 points ago

It's not like the good old days when people had their faces buried in magazines or newspapers on public transportation. Riding the bus or the subway is boring as balls. Having something to do is the only thing that makes it bearable.

And, really, are you expecting them to just strike up a conversation with you? Do you strike up conversation with strangers on the subway? If not, then what do you care how people spend their idle time on public transit? If you do, are you aware that, throughout history, that has always been weird? If you want personal interaction with strangers, strike up conversation in social situations where everyone's having a good time. Public transit is not such a venue.

Relationships, eh? by japuteh3in funny

[–]Janus_Grayden 10 points11 points ago

You were upset about an actual situation that had happened. Your subconscious was reminding you of the hurt that had happened in real life.

There's a bit of difference between that and being upset about someone doing something completely fictional. For instance, a dream of them cheating when there's never even been anything close to that ever happening.

Each man creates his own god. by Monty_Moosein atheism

Yeah, honestly, this strikes a little too close to the awful "you just make science your god" false equivalence nonsense that some religious people spout.

She is right about one thing, though. If we did have the technology, we could live there.

If we had the technology we could run our cars on trash and they'd turn it into champagne and unicorn farts.

Taekwondo was developed by South Korea during the Korean war and is still part of their military training.

Ninjitsu only gets a bad rap because kids try to pretend like they know it to be cool. Feudal Japan didn't think it was quite so funny.
