Things to do for 24 yr old couple. Not outdoorsy. by K8ersin Charlotte

[–]JangusKhan 0 points1 point ago

Just a heads up, the mummies exhibit isn't really for kids, and the rest of the museum is pretty enjoyable for young adults (aquarium and rainforest esp.). Dandelion Market is a pretty relaxed small plate bar, about 2 block away. Rock Bottom Brewery across the street is decent. Mert's Soulfood is a couple of blocks away, excellent stuff.

They mentioned it on the news. Honestly, I didn't see anything about it in the Noda News, otherwise.

ELI5: Can someone please explain the difference between a 'closed' universe, and an 'open' and a 'flat' universe? by Mudskunkin explainlikeimfive

[–]JangusKhan 1 point2 points ago

I'll actually take this as a compliment, as when I worked at a science museum it was basically my MO. However, is the concept of an ever expanding vs. limited expanding universe not the heart of the issue? I get the topological angle (wink) but is the math more of a consequence of the expansion, or vise-versa?

[–]JangusKhan 4 points5 points ago

Wait, i'm confused. Firstly, I will acknowledge it is an imperfect analogy, but if you think it's a good explanation, how can you say that each part is not correct, and with no reason why?

Assuming you understand the idea that the Universe has been, and still is, expanding since the Big Bang, the different "shapes" are related to how fast it's expanding and the amount it starts to collapse back in due to gravity from galaxies and stuff.

An analogy (that leaves out some big mysteries): You throw a baseball straight up (or thereabouts).

You throw it hard, but eventually, it falls back down right in front of you. This is a "closed" universe. Not enough outward expansion, it eventually collapses back in on itself.

You throw the ball again, but with super mutant strength. The ball sails out into space, moving so fast that even though it slows down some as it leaves, it's going so fast that it never stops. The ball keeps traveling forever. This is an "open" universe, where expansion is so fast the inward pull of gravity can't stop it. A universe like this will eventually expand so much that everything will cool down into darkness. Kind of depressing, but not for trillions of years.

Ok, you throw the ball one last time with some help from NASA. You throw the ball with such perfect speed and direction that it coasts into orbit, like a satellite or the Moon. It never falls down, it never leaves. This is a "flat" universe. The balance of expansion and collapse are perfectly in tune, so the Universe reaches a certain size... and then stays there.

At this point it's still unclear which kind of universe we live in.

The neighborhoods in this post are exactly what I would recommend for young dudes looking to have a good time. I don't want to sound too negative, but stay out of Ballantyne. It's essentially the suburbs.

ELI5: How does finding a stronghold with "maths" work? by FusionXin explainlikeimfive

[–]JangusKhan 2 points3 points ago

If you've taken basic algebra, what you're doing is first finding 2 equations of a line, then finding the intersections of those lines.

You need the F3 coordinates to do this. No way around that.

For the first toss, you record the (X,Z) coordinates at the beginning, then where it lands. Type into wolfram alpha: line through (X,Z) and (X,Z). You need to type the numbers from F3. It will give you an equation that looks like Y=X + __. The blanks will be numbers. The plus might bra minus.

Do this again for the second toss. You need to write the 2 equations down.

Now, go back to wolfram alpha, and the the two equations in. It will give you a graph and an intersection point. The intersection is the location, but on wolfram, it will call the Z part Y.

ELI5: How do those 'life time supply of...' competitions work? by foxriver94941in explainlikeimfive

[–]JangusKhan -5 points-4 points ago

In some cases, the winner can get a card that says "Free Pizza" and they just show it to the store. I've heard about someone who won a lifetime supply of (I think) Pepsi. They got a pallet of soda periodically delivered to their house.

Anyone Interested in attending a 'Global Reddit Meetup Day' on June 23rd? (X-POST from /r/UNCCharlotte) by 70DaysInCharlottein Charlotte

[–]JangusKhan 1 point2 points ago

I'm in. Would this be a primarily UNCC focused event? Or more central to CLT? It seems like a decent number of people on this sub are from the south side, so Uni area wouldn't be very convenient.

Honestly, I would be for having it at a more specifically Charlotte spot.

[ELI5] How does touch screen on IPhones, IPads, and IPods work? by jewish_fishin explainlikeimfive

[–]JangusKhan 0 points1 point ago

I'm putting this in a separate comment to ensure OP sees it as an orange red.

iPhones use a capacitive touch screen. The post that is currently top submission is describing a different system.

If you hold an iPhone at just the right angle and look really hard, you can see a very small grid of lines in the glass. This is a network of very fine, transparent wires. As electricity flows though the wires, the electricity forms a weak electromagnetic field. Basically, there are rings of magnetism around the wires. This magnetic field behaves one way if there is nothing touching the screen, and changes if something comes nearby. Also, the way it changes depends on the material touching the screen. Apple sets the sensitivity do it will respond to "finger" material, which is mostly water. Other things, like a piece of sausage or liquid filled objects will work, too.

The iPhone checks all of the wires to see if the magnetic field is changing around them. When it does, the phone translates that into the location of your finger.

I have mixed feelings about the Saucer. The management obviously know their stuff, the selection is beyond great, and they have decent events but:

1) it's in the university area, so accessibility is pretty shit.

2) It's in the university area, so a lot of the clientele doesn't give a shit what barley wine is available, they want to know the shots specials.

I find that the majority of people I meet at Growlers or Noda Brewery actually give a shit.
