Easily my favourite moment in the whole movie. I remember the theatre in at Scotiabank erupted into laughter.

Have to say the shatter element bothered me quite a bit. He did always find a way to bring it back to himself.

I always have a laugh at this one because I always wonder whether Harry Kim was really the only casualty of the other voyager. If he wasn't, then it sucks for anyone else who died and didn't get a replacement.

Who's the better pilot? by rottenpossumin startrek

[–]Jamziz 1 point2 points ago

Haha - interesting question. During the course of Voyager we certainly never heard of the "Paris Manoeuvre".

I'm going to assume that upon Voyagers returning to Earth, after all the debriefing / all the logs have been read and reviewed - Paris will get some crazy commendations based on the manoeuvres that he pulled off to get out of tricky situations. Virtually every episode that Voyager escapes is Paris pulling a manoeuvre.

Who's the better pilot? by rottenpossumin startrek

[–]Jamziz 6 points7 points ago

I'm going to have to lean towards Paris - and believe me I think its heretical that I'm suggesting this but hear me out.

Paris just logged 7 years (2371 - 2378) piloting Voyager through some crazy shit, not to mention all the hours he logged on the Delta Flyer. I'm going to bet thats far more time than Picard had at the helm. I know that he was originally the helmsmen of the Stargazer before he assumed the Captains responsibilities (which he apparently held for 22 years? Holy cow.) - so I'm going to assume that although an extremely qualified pilot he never got the same level of helm experience Paris got in the delta-quadrant.

I'm thinking they're bringing back Nimoy as:

  1. A continued valentine to the original trek fans
  2. (An extension of #1) Capitalize on the marketing potential of having Nimoy attached.
  3. JJ and crews belief that having Nimoy on board adds to the legitimacy of this criminal reconstruction of trek.

Amazing! I was just thinking to myself the other day that I would love to have a trek themed painting of the TNG characters in iconic poses in my flat.

You must do a Picard one that makes him look glorious and heroic.

Was thoroughly relieved when I heard he'd been casted in the film which I suspected was to play Khan. I was relieved because I know the writing for his character / this story is going to be weak at best, I feel a bit better knowing an incredible actor like him will helm the role.

[–]Jamziz 8 points9 points ago

I absolutely agree. I'm going to repost my comment from Trekmovie to here. (I find that the /r/startrek community is far less enamoured by JJ abrams version of Star Trek then the Trekmovie commentators.)

Zero surprises here.

The Khan angle was virtually confirmed with the casting news that was making its rounds around the internet – del toro, etc. The leaked set photos of a “failed vulcan neck pinch” cemented those rumours regarding the character.

All the major studios have taken some serious notes in light of the successes enjoyed by the Batman Reboots – Paramount is no different. Given the formula used by JJ and crowd to piece together a “new” story, its no surprise that Khan (the most iconic villain in Trek history aka greatest marketing potential) was chosen.

Problem for me though is the fact that Eric Bana’s Nero was so heavily based off Khan this may seem redundant. I know regardless of the quality of the writing, Cumberbatch is going to bring that character to life, he’s a phenomenal actor. Bana’s character was too one dimensional, not enough for him to work with as an actor – all he could do was “emulate” that Khan feel.

I don’t know what JJ and crowds contractual obligations were like, but I wish Paramount took a hint from from the performance of MI4 vs MI3 and brought on a new creative team to tackle this project, let JJ rest comfortably in the producers chair. MI4’s 93% RT score and far superior box office returns vs MI3’s soft 70% RT score and significantly lower than expected box office returns should have been evidence enough. Wouldn’t mind seeing Brad Bird helm this franchise…

This is the leading candidate for a new Trek Series? Really? Tell me this is a joke, it reads like one. by CampforLifein startrek

I have to agree with you - I've always had a burning desire to see how Starfleet / The Federation turns out post Voy. Think about it, Dominion gets owned, Cardassia becomes a dump (which suggests that all those border issues throughout TNG / DS9 have been rectified with all Federation colonies well within Federation borders). New height of cooperation with the Klingons with Martok as Chancellor and Worf as ambassador. Romulan alliance reinforced with the actions of the Enterprise in Nemesis (Perhaps even Spocks re-unnifcation efforts begin to materialize). Janeway took out the Borg, no doubt brought back enough data to utilize the transwarp corridors the Borg had / slip stream technology they tried developing.

Hypothetically the Federation could begin consolidating most of the Galaxy under its banner of membership. This opens the door to exploring other Galaxies...

Also with respect to what you said about Starfleet Medical - I've always loved this idea. Star Trek given its scope has the ability to do episodes / story arcs that can incorperate these popular genres already on television. If and when a new series takes off, doing episode arcs that focus on Starfleet Medical (in the style of House / Greys Anatomy / ER), Starfleet Intelligence (X-files, Bourne, 24 influences), Starfleet Command / Federation Council (West Wing style). This would be akin to a serialized television show (Much like DS9 with multiple characters, plot arcs, etc) but could also switch back to the TNG bottle episodes. Food for thought.

A lot of truth there.

Someone aught to get all these veterans together in one room and ask them to hammer out the next game changing star trek television series. Paramount should then afford them the same tools / freedoms to push the boundaries of television and let the next great instalment be born. /end fantasy.

I fell your pain - the trek community is pretty divided with respect to what they want. I feel like if the fans organized around some consensus with respect to what they want, what their expectations are and sent that message to paramount we could see things moving along faster.

Personally I think Trek on television will suffer when networks like NBC / FOX / CBS revolve around shows like American Idol, Desperate Housewives, Hawai five-0, NCIS, CSI every god damn city in America..

If Trek comes back in needs an HBO treatment, in terms of smaller seasons, bigger budgets.. No chance a network like CBS will do that.

Good observation - I'll quote my response to this from up top :

Definitely would be an interesting aspect to visit though - federation citizens who disagreed with this policy circa the 24th century, peaced out to form colonies of their own where this practice is legal, becomes a sizeable regional power only 200 years later. Perhaps in the aftermath of Janeway destroying the borg collective as we knew it, these now "freed" drones were left helpless and unable to return to the cultures they came from, having no where to turn this new civilizations adopts them.. They could represent a source of tension / friction with the federation - aka they become the nouveau Borg - a "child" of the federation + Borg - duno I'm not a writer haha.

Only advantage I see there is Frakes is a legit veteran of the most successful trek television franchise. That would almost certainly guarantee a well oiled television series.. trouble always comes down to who the writers are...
