Planter I just built with a wire fencing to keep out rabbits/my curious dog. What do ya'll think? by GuyintheArmyin gardening

Hence putting the plants on top, and chickens on the bottom.

It's not moving the goalposts or changing the argument. The argument is "There are people who would rather die than suffer". They aren't all people, but it's a significant portion for whom being left suffering is worse than dying. Therefore, you cannot definitively quantify 'who has it worse', because it all varies by person. You have your opinion and I have mine, and neither of us can tell other people what their experience is.

We're not going to agree. That's fine. I have different priorities and values than you do. We're never going to find a point of agreement about what should or shouldn't be survived. My only goal had been to remind you that not everyone places life above all else in importance the way you seem to. I note how you completely ignored my comparison to dads deprived of their children.

Ahh, see, Hiddleston's eyes are the best part, imo. They're so emotive! But this is good. Because I already have enough competition, hehe. You go on ahead and take Cap.

Ah, a complete misunderstanding of mental trauma. I hope you don't go around saying shit like that to returned soldiers.

We're talking about history, and context. The women in Nanking couldn't just move. The women in the Congo can't just move. I could just move. But I'm a white American female, who's not going to be under any such threat, with a lot more available to me.

Meh. Like I said, I don't think life is sacred. Yes, it's literally the be-all-end-all of existence, but, existence is pretty damn insignificant in the grand scheme of things. You're not suffering when you're dead.

It'll be different after I have children--if said children weren't dead, then I'd have a reason that staying alive would be worth it. But as I am right now? The mental scarring that would come with going through something like that would likely ruin the rest of my life, not to mention how shit life always is in a place that's been ravaged by war. It's not like you just sit and endure it and then everything goes back to normal. You endure it, and then it's over but everything is still terrible. Especially if it's one of those cases where they come in, kill all the men, torture all the women. Love of my life murdered before my eyes and then suffer PTSD the rest of my life? A lot of people never recover from that. Just from how hard it was for me to deal with a friend's suicide, I'm fairly confident that unless I had a damn good reason, life wouldn't be worth it after something so traumatic.

You're different. That's great. But that's why this shouldn't be treated as a pissing contest--you and I and everyone else in the world will all have different opinions on what is the worst possible thing. There are men and women who can walk away from their children without a care in the world; that doesn't mean that other parents feel the same. The stereotype of the unfeeling deadbeat dad is what led to people thinking "Ah who cares about him, we can't take custody away from the mother, they care more", which leads to a lot of male suicide. Some people can shrug off bullying, others can't and end up killing themselves.

You just can't quantify suffering.

Unfamiliar measurements in US recipes by fruntin Cooking

[–]InfinitelyThirsting 0 points1 point ago

I think it's because we're more nostalgic? We never switched over to metric, and a lot of cooking skills were handed down from before scales were really around. Grandma's recipes, etc. Switching over to metric is a lot more important for baking than cooking. I measure pretty much nothing when I cook, heh, so the cups and such on recipes are guidelines, because I know about how much they mean.

Hehe, yeah, whereas I can just know how much a cup or a tablespoon is, without measuring.

I think it's a taste thing; studies have noted that women cannot as a whole agree on who's attractive. Tom Hiddleston is damn near perfect, to me, while Chris Evans just... doesn't really do it for me. I mean, he's got a good body and all, but it's a bit toooo huge for me (I like arms and muscles, but I feel like Evans would squish me like a bug, I'll take a more lithe or compact guy any day), and his face just isn't what I like in a face. So Hiddleston, being tall and lithe, is just... mmf.

Because he said let's see if women would prefer the men's role. I was pointing out that yes, historically, there have always been women who prefer the men's role.

[–]InfinitelyThirsting 0 points1 point ago

Life isn't some holy thing. All we are is what we're going through. As atheist as I am, if my life's suffering far outweighs the positives, then it's just a net negative, and I wouldn't want to be alive. I edited in that this applies to a lot of scenarios. There are levels of adversity that are indeed worse than death, because we are our experiences; when you're dead, nothing matters anymore. A quick death versus longterm torture? There's a reason I support euthanasia.

Male Privilege. by Seacrest_Hulkin MensRights

[–]InfinitelyThirsting 0 points1 point ago

Yeah. My point is that there are women who prefer the men's role. I'm rabidly against the draft. No gender role has ever been all good for one half and all bad for the other.

Male Privilege. by Seacrest_Hulkin MensRights

[–]InfinitelyThirsting -1 points0 points ago

If it's pointing out that privilege isn't a black and white issue and is more complex than just about gender, I'm all about it. If it's being just as shallow as the people who think all men always have it better than women, well. Sigh.

Male Privilege. by Seacrest_Hulkin MensRights

I'd rather be killed than undergo what some of those women have had to suffer. It's not a pissing contest. War is absolutely horrifying for anyone who has direct contact with it.

Edit: Some of you might rather be tortured, I'd rather not. It applies to more than just this example, in my life--if I'm ever severely burned, I don't want to be kept alive in a painful, melted skin suit. If I were completely paralyzed, I'd be suiciding out not too long after. If I get a terrible disease, same thing. When you're dead, you're dead; if your level of suffering is greater than the good parts of being alive, I have no religious reason to not rather be dead. If I had the choice between a few years of torture or a quick bullet to the head (which I know no one ever does, but this a hypothetical), I'd rather take the bullet.

Uh, a lot of the women of Britain, especially London, risked being maimed or killed in the bombing during WWII, and had to deal with their homes being utterly destroyed. Ya might want to pick a better example there.

Retro-styled a bit perhaps (I wear things like that all the time), but not period. The bikini wasn't introduced until 1946, for example, and didn't become common til later.

Well, there have been women fighting to be able to join the armed forces for decades, including during all the major wars of this century, and including today, to be able to fight on front lines. So.

Sigh. The woman had no idea her image was going to be used. The original image was not a big campaign whatsoever, it was briefly shown within the company. It wasn't until the eighties that it was coopted to become an icon.

Also, she was a musician, and quit because she was worried about her fingers getting mangled in the machinery. Not because it was too hard.

They're amazing! They sprout so quickly, and are ready almost instantly in garden terms, hehe. Three weeks or so from seed to harvest. I'm leaving mine in a little longer to hopefully plump up; we had a lot of grey rainy days, so they were a little behind.

I really hate the way that cosmetics are advertised to women... by MsManifestoin TwoXChromosomes

[–]InfinitelyThirsting 12 points13 points ago

Oh, please. Let's not be ridiculous. Most of those things have been considered flaws. Yes, there were time periods when you'd powder your hair white--but plenty of other time periods where everyone wore wigs of young hair to cover up their own grey, or dyed with henna or other brown dyes. Women have never considered to be most beautiful in old age. Smooth skin has always been prized, no one to my knowledge has ever idealised stretchmarks.

Cosmetics have existed for literally thousands of years. We've been decorating for longer than we have history. Don't make patently false claims just to try to make people feel better.
