God's solution vs Hitler's solution by sci101in atheism

[–]GuitarGuru2001 0 points1 point ago

Yep. and Martin Luther wasn't responsible for the anti-semetic foray, SS belts didn't say God With Us, and Hitler didn't make numerous references to himself as God's Servant for slaughtering the Jews...

History is hard. Making shit up is easy. Try the hard path next time.

Christianity supports scientific investigation more fully and consistently than any other worldview. by josiahspraguein Christianity

"Personally, it appears to me that modern evidence does suggest that natural selection acting on genetic changes, combined with various flavors of genetic drift and flow, can alter populations to the point of producing new species, as technically defined. "

Science isn't a personal choice, and Behe's book has been eviscerated on multiple occasions. It's simply an argument from ignorance: "I can't understand how things can become so complex! Therefore God!"

To be sure, there have been amazing advances in the sciences due to Christians, but touting that Christians have nothing to be afraid of, then subscribing to defunct arguments against evolution is intellectually dishonest, and seems more like pandering than honesty.

I appreciate the sentiment, just not the fact that he was honest enough to carry out his own sentiment to the logical conclusion.

Historically, both theists and atheists have made advances in science.

Many theists actually sought knowledge in the context of a God who created a natural order. Of course it is mostly happenstance, since after the Greeks, and then the early Moslems (who made amazing advances in chemistry, astronomy, and mathematics while the europeans were wallowing in filth), Christianity became the intellectual and economic powerhouse, and was the prime investor for much of the sciences.

Faith = Imagination X Stupidity^2 by what_the_french_sayin atheism

"Einstein didn't write that! There's no way he said that."

"Yes he did. Just have faith in this obviously photoshopped picture."

"But you just said it's obviously photoshopped!"

"Well, since the earliest gospel was written 40 years after jesus' death by noneyewitnesses, who's the more credulous one?"

I see this as an opportunity to point out the faith that people have in the bible. Here we have a 'shopped picture of something that is obviously not true (the statement is good, but Einstein sure as hell didn't write it). Meanwhile the gospels or quran are incredibly removed from what the Jesus and Mo actually said. It can be a rhetorical trick for pointing out the incredulity.

If the Father is radically different than Jesus, then why even pay attention to Jesus at all?

I think you just explained to yourself why many think that religion is a man-made institution, especially Christianity.

Nevermind the fact that Hell wasn't mentioned in the Old Testament.

Is God a hypocrite or could the passages you quoted be reinterpreted in light of Jesus, God's final revelation?

Christians: did any of you used to be atheists? What are your stories about becoming Christian? by andjokin Christianity

[–]GuitarGuru2001 4 points5 points ago

There are both Christians and Atheists who don't take the idea of 1 Peter 3:15 seriously, who merely blindly follow ideas based on emotional focus and anger, and never make a concerted, respectful effort to examine the claims and history of religions from an unbiased perspective.

As someone who generally fought ignorance on both sides, I am continually frustrated. There are Christians who don't know that the bible is written in 3 languages, over multiple continents, that there were major translation errors in the KJV, and that there are more manuscripts for the New Testament than other books of antiquity. There are atheists that don't know why Paul's theology allows for cherry-picking the Old Testament, why Martin Luther wrote his 95 Theses, that the gospels aren't eyewitness accounts (or even what they say), what the exodus is, etc.

I'm out and proud, and would consider myself an anti-theist, but I was always a vehement fighter for what I considered truth, and wanted it for others, whether on either side. This results in what could be seen (by ignorant people) as an emotional hatred of God, but that is far from accurate. This is a skeptic's mindset, and can exist either on the Christian side or the Atheist side. Many Christians are angry at Christian culture's stupidity (Derek Webb, Jon Acuff, the entire emergent church); would you accept them yet denigrate atheists who recognize their own inconsistencies in the culture, who point out the demarcation line between people who care about truth more than belief?

This was what set me down the road to Christianity initially. "Hmm, there must be something to it."

Turns out there is something to it (psychologically), but that doesn't necessarily mean that the something is true.

My motivation for being outspoken is that I recognize the good in my life that has come througn my deconversion. It was the same reason I wanted to share "Salvation," as a free gift that leads to prosperity and joy in this life.

I started studying the historical Jesus and deconverted. What aspects of his historicity did you find acceptable for grounds for acceptance?

I'm just curious as to what you knew when you were anti-theist about Jesus, and what you know now, and if there are any gaps in your knowledge. I find that apologists often gloss over the problems of the historical Jesus.

Can you recommend me song Christian music that isn't TERRIBLE by beng1053in Christianity

[–]GuitarGuru2001 1 point2 points ago

Christian music I still own after purging from deconversion and not being able to stomach the cheesy crap anymore:

Caedmon's Call: My ex-favorite song Dance (also written by Webb) group of reformed, amazing musicians.

Derek Webb: wrote Wedding Dress, T-Shirts, and is extremely anti-christian-culture.

Alison Krauss is Christian.

Brooke Fraser: Wrote for Hillsong, but makes amazing music as well. Check out Coachella by her, about the music festival, and if you want worship music check out Hillsong.

Gungor as others have said. I'm sad that I no longer believe in some of their lyrics, because they are beautiful metaphors (Beautiful Things comes to mind)

Kutless: I used to like them before i fell in love with better music. Check them out for slightly harder Rock.

Lincoln Brewster: Cheesy but an amazing guitarist. Fairly sad that he sold out so much.

NeedtoBreathe: One of my favorite bands of all time. More Time is a good example.

Mute Math: Chaos, Control Amazing band.

Robbie Seay Band: Amazing band. Check out Beautiful scandalous night

Shane and Shane: Two incredibly talented primarily acoustic musicians with powerful lyrics.

Vicki Beeching: Best female worship leader IMO.

Hope that helps.. mostly rock/alt rock but very little cheesy on that list.

Questions about my first tube amp by SocotraBrewingCoin Guitar

[–]GuitarGuru2001 1 point2 points ago

EE here, checking in.

  1. Always, always run it in a matching fashion. the transformer couples the power of the tubes to the right 'size' load (ohms). Using the wrong coupling is like using first gear at 60 MPH: fire happens. If you get an extension cab (8 ohms) and have a cab already (8 ohms) and wire them in parallel, it will become 4 ohms, in series, 16 ohms. If you don't know what these mean, I suggest you become familiar with it before you get an ext. cab.
  2. Tubes work by boiling electrons' guidance being restricted like a spigot knob. The electrons are made similarly to a light bulb: a filament is heated by high voltage and the excess electrons exist as light (orange glow), which creates a ton of heat. Typical heat for 1 tube is about that of a 100w lightbulb (non-florescent.. the old kind). When you see smoke, or smell smoke, turn it off; you've burned up something.
  3. If you have an on and standby switch, turn on the "on" switch for about 1 minute before you hit 'standby,' as this allows the tubes to heat up before the real juice is applied. When taking a break of less than 10 minutes, turn off standby. Turning off? just flick the "on" switch first. Big things are the transformer (point 1) and the tubes; Tubes die, preamp tubes last much longer than power tubes, and it all depends on how hard you push them. If you find a deadening of tone, replace the power tubes. If you push the amp at 10/12 all the time and play 4 hours a day every day, you should have about 1 year of life from a set of power tubes. Preamp tubes.. once every 5 years.. they last forever.
  4. Tube amps generally last forever, barrign burning up the transformer or running it over with a car. They're fairly heavy beasts, not like a computer. Most are made of very sturdy components, so it should last you awhile. Happy Tone!

Walkie Talkie signal coming through on my amp, what do I do? by trefrog66in Guitar

[–]GuitarGuru2001 4 points5 points ago

EE here, checking in.

  1. The faraday cage others have suggested. High-dollar solution is copper tape, low dollar solution is aluminum foil. Put it inside the cavity under the pickups, glue aluminum foil to the inside of the pickguard, and be sure and somehow ground this aluminum to the overall ground of your guitar (wire to the solder-dump spot connected to a screw).
  2. There is a possibility of some sort of resonant filter being created by your electronics, which no amount of shielding will fix. First, check if the problem occurs with all types of cables (really cheap cables aren't well-shielded, but try different lengths as well and see if you get the same effect.). If this is a problem, you'll need to get rid of the resonance. One effective way that even helps your tone is the treble bleed capacitor. This will change the resonant frequency to another dimension (a different, lower, non RF frequency)

Don't be afraid to say "I don't know" by DaJiain Christianity

I'm wondering how this idea squares with the first chapter of James, where believers are admonished to seek wisdom from god, who gives generously to those who ask for wisdom?

The same sweeping stereotype can be said of Christians; most simply follow what their pastor says and don't engage intellectually with the gospel, epistles, theology, history, the law, or the prophets.

Ignorance knows no bounds, on either side.

Though I hope you understand enough that most atheists are also agnostic?

I go to the University of Oklahoma. The OU Daily published this article about a month ago regarding 'New Atheism'. by Rocketman157in Christianity

[–]GuitarGuru2001 3 points4 points ago

I think the problem, in all communities regardless of belief, political credo, or anything, is that there are people who act in accordance with their emotion and preferences, and others who take a more educated approach.

When I was a christian, I was consistently disheartened by others who did a sum total of zero legitimate apologetics research, who didn't flesh out 1 peter 3:15 in the slightest. I see the same problem in the atheist community, with many young (maturity-wise) unbelievers embracing the animosity of their elders (dawkins, harris, hitchens) without having laid the extensive groundwork in the theology, neruology, or history that underpinned each of their messages.

[–]GuitarGuru2001 0 points1 point ago

I concur. As a Christian, I couldn't read "I Don't have enough faith to be an atheist" by geisler and Turek because it was so bad. As an atheist, I find dawkins troublesome for the same reason.

His grasp on theology and constant straw-manning are disheartening. I give people who are interested in my own journey 'letter to a christian nation' or 'god is not great' first. I would never recommend the god delusion to anyone, christian or atheist.

So?

I am a skeptic first and an atheist second. I'll always change my mind in light of the evidence, including rethinking the god question. This means I read any (worthwhile) christian literature i'm given.

Fortunately C.S. Lewis' arguments are fairly naive and easily dismissed, but for whatever reason small-minded people believe he's some sort of great thinker.

I'm reading End of Faith right now, and recently finished hitchens.

You're right. Though I prefer Harris' and Hitchens' works to Dawkins, as they provide ample evidence from the past of the poison that is religion, and how it works its way into our humanity.
