A note on Timothy 2:12 by Albertssonin atheism

Another minor point: it was pseudoepigraphical. Paul didn't write it. Somr misogynist that wanted to add credibility to his ideas did.

One reason why people believe in God - doing so removes their responsibility to make their own decisions. by wonderfuldogin atheism

[–]GuitarGuru2001 1 point2 points ago*

You're 100% wrong. I spent 3 years of independent searching and research, reading Institutes, the early church fathers (Augustine, etc), and coming to the conclusion that the works-based church I attended was not the home of the gospel. I left my church family, many of whom i was extremely close to, over the truth of Reformed theology.

I didn't mind the slavery either; I was a Christian Hedonist (John Piper's term), who found satisfaction in the truth of scripture, the word, and history. Just because it's fun doesn't make it true.

I appreciate you openly admitting your desire to ignore my writings, and not invest extensive thought in something which would challenge your views. The focus is not on God hating evil; it is on the fact that God blames us for His mistakes; Blame shifting and victim blaming are not characteristics of a well-developed moral being; they are characteristics of an egotistical child.

Concerning the established theories that are taught in seminaries across the country, what proof do you have that anything I said was untrue? I'd love to look at it. The Documentary theory has given way to other theories that share the same time frame and multiple-author ideas, but vary on exact dating and who contributed what.

The Blackwell companion to the new testament (standard fair for Seminary) points to the 2-source hypothesis, holds that the authors of the gospels are today unknown (the names were added later), that half of Paul's letters were pseudoepigraphical.

Codex Sianiticus (our oldest manuscript) provides a really cool insight into textual criticism: Mark, which was the first gospel written (30-35 years after Jesus' "crucifixion"), has no virgin birth nor resurrection. The story of the virgin birth, added in Luke and Matthew from the Q source, has multiple inconsistencies. The fact that you've never been taught any of this in church highlights the dishonesty of the whole enterprise. This is what theologens know to be true but don't tell anyone.

So I'll ask: Show me the evidence. Give me a link to a source that, in a scholarly way, proves anything I've said untrue. I actually value the truth of what I believe, so i don't brush things aside like you apparently want to. But I've been looking hard for a few years now, and have found nothing to the contrary.

P.S. the coffee shop atheist is my blog. If you want to understand why someone would go from a strong, reformed believer to antitheistic atheist, you should read it. But if you want to continue being comfortable, ignore this entire message; don't research, don't learn, and certainly don't investigate history, archaeology, science, or anything that might sway you. But don't have the audacity to say that you don't have blind faith, or that you've done even a cursory attempt to satisfy 1 Peter 3:15.

True freedom of intellect is better than anything offered by Jesus. It's a hard road to admit you're wrong, but it's worth it in the end.

Edit: here is an AMA from an atheist NT scholar. Pretty cool stuff.

One reason why people believe in God - doing so removes their responsibility to make their own decisions. by wonderfuldogin atheism

[–]GuitarGuru2001 1 point2 points ago

Exactly.

God condemns man. Then God chooses some men to come to jesus, therefore replacing their depravity with righteousness by the atonement of His Son. Meaning the choice was never man's but Gods.

Furthermore, it is God's choice to give them over to sinful desires by condemning them in the first place. I take no issue with what you said, except that you're trying to have it both ways.

Under reformed theology, God is responsible for salvation, and because of total depravity, man can only choose sin (righteousness is as dirty rags Isaiah..) and by God's Choice (Irresistible Grace), some may gain the ability to do good.

Ergo, sin is god's fault. The depraved nature is God's fault. He made us this way (or he is not omnipotent). This is the logical conclusion of Reformed theology: That God is the most insatiable egomanical torturer that all of fiction has ever conjured.

God is a tyrant who hates humans. Or he is too inept to realize what he was doing.

"We must question the story logic of having an all-knowing all-powerful God, who creates faulty Humans, and then blames them for his own mistakes." -Gene Roddenberry

But yeah, you still ignored the "hardening of heart," and you twist the meaning of romans 1; God makes people be evil. Period. To show off his (ego) glory. You can try to dress it up like i did for years, or you can value truth and honesty over fairy tales and become an atheist.

Then there's the problem that half of Paul's epistles are pseudoepigraphical, the gospel authors are anonymous, and the entire old testament was written after 950, complete with edits and redactions that tried to paint a polytheistic israel as monotheistic the whole time.

Sola Scriptura is bogus, and you would know that with 1 hour of honest research. Good luck.

Moral of the story: "God made me do it" is more accurate than "I have a choice in the matter." ergo, your first comment was completely incorrect, and the OP is more accurate than you are. If you're reformed you should be more familiar with free will/God's election, drawing, and unrighteous nature.

One reason why people believe in God - doing so removes their responsibility to make their own decisions. by wonderfuldogin atheism

[–]GuitarGuru2001 0 points1 point ago

You say you are reformed. Yet you say choice is up to man not god.

You are conveniently ignoring a lot here, such as when god hardens Pharaohs heart, or as Paul says he prepares some clay for destruction (making the absurd conclusion that as the potter he is justified in inflicting eternal suffering on humans because he is more egotistical than everyone ever)

I'm not sure you fully understand reformed theology if you believe in free will. The position of god made me do it is more Biblically teneble than free will means everything is our fault.

There are a lot more areas where religious tax exemption creates more problems than solutions.

There have been recent cases where churches couldn't have bookstores or get tax exemption for retirement communities, but coffeeshops, schools, pastor homes, and other places are still exempt. At any rate, megachurch pastors make tax-free bank.

At USC (Carolina), we have 3 itinerant staff that are chaplains for the Football, Basketball, and Baseball teams; they lead prayers, provide counciling, and get paid by the University to push protestantism.

Its some bullshit.

Yeah that passage is an interpolation from around the 2nd Century, is not authentic, and if it were, would nullify jesus' sinlessness, since he is ordered by law to stone anyone caught in adultery by the father.

He used the wrong word. Personable means someone who is enjoyable to be around. Personal as a characteristic describes something that has aspects of humanity. If a dog could talk to you, he would be a personal dog. If your dog talked and was generally agreeable, he'd be personable.

and yes. people can be assholes.
