IAm Phil LaMarr voice actor, face actor (Mad TV, Pulp Fiction, Futurama) by Imphillamarrin IAmA

[–]GrokMonkey 0 points1 point ago

Actually, the briefcase was originally going to be full of diamonds (speculated by some to be from the Reservoir Dogs heist, nothing's been said on this either way that I've seen), but they figured that this would be too boring, so they went with a MacGuffin.

Ultimately, I'm glad it's simply an unknowable MacGuffin, because any definition to it would shift the focus too much from the characters.

Well, that's not say he wanted those guys gunned down. Him being so shocked by that, so agog, I'd say there's more than a fair chance he was friends with them, even if he informed Marcellus about the briefcase.

Fellow DMs, how does one make an NPC go insane? by 501Milesin DnD

He is a man of intelligence, and being a wizard within a world so steeped in the arcane, a man of science. Being as powerful as I imagine he is, a man of will. It would take a lot to break him, and all of it must be done--at your hand, no less.

TIL Miles Davis was invited to a White House dinner by Ronald Reagan. During dinner, Nancy Reagan turned to him and asked what he'd done with his life. Straight-faced, Davis replied: "Well, I've changed the course of music five or six times. What have you done except fuck the president?" by lankowankoin todayilearned

[–]GrokMonkey 2 points3 points ago

It's a little girl asking what she, personally, should do if someone offers her drugs. Now, assuming she doesn't want to do those drugs, she should just say no. Which is what Nancy Reagan was saying, and all she meant to be saying.

Underlying causes of drug use are only tangentially related, as is "Just Say No" as a national anti-drug campaign.

If someone asked you if you would like some crack (I'm assuming here you would not), the correct response is not a graph about drug arrests and incarceration or your ideas on the missteps of the war against drugs.

The correct response is to just say "no" to the person offering you the drugs.

"Just Say No" as a national policy? Yes, flawed.
As a personal policy? What the hell else are you going to do?

Michael Bay Announces a Female Ninja Turtle....WTF by KarlPaynussHungusin movies

[–]GrokMonkey 0 points1 point ago

Doesn't stop them from wanting it.

For instance, technically DCU shares continuity with a sizable portion of H.P. Lovecraft's stories, even if that continuity is not reciprocated.

Also, I'm not sure parody's really the word to use here.

Didn't know that about the ooze, though.

It wasn't explicitly canonical at any point, but that's what the creators were aiming for/wanted. I've never read the comic, but it's likely that this has been contradicted at some point (but then again, maybe not).

I assume he meant that the ooze was in the comic, not the ooze being extraterrestrial was in the comic, because the ooze was man-made. I know this because they wanted Ninja Turtles to be in the same continuity as Daredevil, and the ooze is meant to be the chemical that blinded/gave blind-sight to Daredevil when he was a boy.

TIL that requiring that scientists--even accomplished surgeons--believe in Natural Selection before you let honor them at a prestigious university makes you one of "Darwin's Bullies." How do you answer people who demand you tolerate anti-scientific thinking? by herbert1820in skeptic

[–]GrokMonkey 0 points1 point ago

Oh, of course, and I agree wholeheartedly. They're clearly stretching the truth to try and rustle up some sort of counter-protest of people who don't truly care, and are abusing the word "bully", and everything that goes along with it, to do so.

But is a surgeon's belief in "intelligent design" in any way sabotaging their ability or competence as a surgeon? There are some times when it is actually irrelevant. As long is it doesn't somehow compromise their competence in their field, they can believe whatever they want. And they have the right to, frankly.

And, likewise, the student body and faculty are well within their rights to protest his receiving the honor.

It is worth noting, however, that otaku sometimes has a deeper negative connotation in Japan than nerd/geek can have in the States, with the subculture occasionally being at the center of moral panics.

For two weeks Sandler learned the accent and some slang from a man that was part inspiration of the character.

Of course, I can't really say whether or not his accent is ultimately accurate.

Trolling aside, the definition has actually been an issue in the past. For instance, in some places it doesn't actually count as rape unless the victim was the one being penetrated, so, legally, a woman cannot rape a man without also putting something inside of him against his will.

The Kitchen by oD323in Frisson

[–]GrokMonkey 0 points1 point ago

If you even just google frisson, the definition it gives is "A sudden strong feeling of excitement or fear; a thrill: 'a frisson of excitement'"

It's chills or goosebumps and any kind of emotional response, positive or otherwise.
