If it were some highly fundamentalist dude from Kansas saying that the Holocaust never happened and that gays should be hung from cranes and liberal dissenters should be rounded up and put in prison

That would be Fred Phelps.

Why the hate for Jimmy Carter? If we listened to him we would have had a more robust financial system; less dependence on foreign oil; a better environment and a far less corrupt federal government not filled with ideologues. by the6thReplicantin politics

Annoying thing is that our electorate is actually quite diverse, and so are the politicians of the two-party system in certain respects. But we're just too collectively dumb to notice it, and just assume that each party means one thing, and one thing only... with no options in between. If the Democratic and Republican parties suddenly disappeared, but all the currently-serving politicians remained and were asked to form groups with no prior knowledge of the two-party system - - you'd easily see a multi-party system emerge.

Or if every congressional Democrat was taken to the UK, put into their parliament, and then told to join a British party - - you'd see them evenly split between Labour, the LibDems, and the Conservatives, with a handful of others joining UKIP. If Republicans joined British Parliament, you'd likely see most join the Tories and UKIP, with a few joining the BNP and perhaps one or two would go to the LibDems.

It's very frustrating. Personally I lean liberal by American standards, but I'm not a strict ideologue... I'd really just like to see some pragmatism and common-sense goals, with progressive, yet cautious, reform. But with two parties struggling to maintain 51%, this doesn't happen often since they risk giving away everything to the sole opposing party if they screw up. If a third party entered into the equation it would seriously shake things up, for the better in my opinion. We've almost done it a few times... during the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Populist Party and its allies held a fair amount of seats in Congress, but they eventually faded with time as the Democrats became less classically liberal and slightly more progressive (think what would've happened in the UK if Labour died out before 1915, with the Liberals and the Conservatives left as the only two parties). And in 1992, if Ross Perot and his running-mate hadn't come off as batshit insane, they might have destroyed the two-party system as well. Oh well.

We'll have to try again.

The War on Drugs wasn't quite as bad under Nixon. Yes, technically he "started" it... but his policy was focused more on rehabilitation and treatment rather than punishment and law enforcement.

And there we have the dilemma of the Democratic Party... do they expand the tent and potentially hinder progressive reform, or do they go for a smaller tent and risk alienating themselves from the moderate and conservatives who have pushed them into the majority?

That's gotta be a major headache for Democratic strategists all over the United States.

edit - I should point out that the GOP also has the big-tent/small-tent dilemma. And it's pretty apparent which one they've chosen to pitch recently. Unfortunately for them, I can't fit in it and neither can many other voters.

I'm not a big Carter fan, but it has little to do with his political ideology. Honestly I think he was on the right track regarding most of the issues of the time... but my problem is that he was so uncharismatic and perceivably weak that it created a perfect storm which ushered in the Reagan era - - which we still have not recovered from.

I know this sounds wrong, but I truly believe that a strong personality is essential to being a successful politician. Just look at history... the most comprehensive progressive change in this country happened under the watch of guys like Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, and Lyndon Johnson. A far better Democratic candidate in 1976 would've been someone like Lloyd Bentsten, Frank Church, Dolph Briscoe or Harold Hughes.

Why does the US not adopt the metric system?

Because we'd have to pay for the replacement of every road sign in the country... and when we Americans are faced with spending tax dollars on anything remotely productive, we protest in the streets as if we're trying to free Nelson Mandela.

Any realistic attempt at reforming it might require an anti-lobbying lobby to persuade lawmakers to agree to stop lobbyists from persuading them too much.

Sarah Palin is what ultimately led me to support Obama.

I voted for McCain in the primary, and thought he might be the pragmatic type of Republican who would just do what he thought was best rather than being a strict conservative ideologue. Although as the campaign dragged on, I saw him trying to please the right-wing more and more, so I shifted into the "undecided" category. But then he picked Sarah Palin and lost any chance of getting my vote.
