Nurse refuses student inhaler during asthma attack by croutonsoupin offbeat

[–]Gecko99 2 points3 points ago

So you think it's okay for a dean to take an asthmatic student's inhaler, because he shouldn't expect privacy?

Does it have an especially long handle? It could be for stirring a pitcher of iced tea.

The fear of litigation is one of the most destructive factors currently at work in American society. What we see here is a dean who took a kid's inhaler out of fear of the school's liability if it should be misused and a nurse who would stand and watch, inhaler in hand, as an asthmatic teenager died in her locked office, also to protect herself from liability. If I had an asthmatic child, or a child with a similar medical issue, I would seriously consider withdrawing them from a school system like the one Florida has and homeschooling them.

They have one of those on the GRE. You have to transcribe a paragraph about not cheating. In cursive!

The inhaler was originally in the student's locker. A dean, going around searching lockers since students have no rights for some reason, found the inhaler and took it.

Volusia County School officials stand by a Deltona High School nurse's decision to refuse a student his inhaler during an asthma attack, citing a lack of a parent's signature on a medical release form. by scientologist2in WTF_Florida

[–]Gecko99 2 points3 points ago

The whole story is fucked up. Could you imagine working at a school and taking an asthmatic kid's inhaler in the first place? That's what the dean did. Searches of lockers like that should be illegal. For some reason young people in the US are supposed to expect to have absolutely no rights.

SAT is coming up? What are some websites you used to study? by trapkingxoin GetStudying

[–]Gecko99 0 points1 point ago

I'd recommend taking the SAT later.

In between now and then, get some lists of SAT words and make flash cards to learn their definitions. Instead of learning 10 words a day, you should probably try to learn maybe 100 words in a week. Make 100 flash cards, and every day use them to quiz yourself. When you find a word you can't remember a definition of, look at the definition and move it back 10 or so cards so you come back to it soon. At the end of the week make another 100 cards and occasionally look at old sets of flash cards.

Take up reading as a hobby and when you come across a word you don't know, write it on a notecard that you use as a bookmark. Look up the words sometime and add them to your pile of flashcards. Catch 22 is a good book to read. You need to improve your reading skills anyway if you scored so low on the practice SAT. Honestly if you can find any sort of books you like reading you'll be ahead of many of your peers. Go to your library sometime and look for books you might be interested. Don't limit yourself to the fiction section either. There's got to be something you'd like to read about.

Does anyone else think that the Darwin fish is a bad idea (in America at least)? by thehitchrestinpeacein atheism

[–]Gecko99 0 points1 point ago

The fish is a Christian symbol and I feel that if I were to put Darwin in it, that would mean that I agree with both Darwin's ideas and those of Christianity. Some Christians do indeed believe that evolution happens. I don't want to misrepresent myself.

In one sentence or one word, explain what makes YOU so confident in your atheism? by MattLikesMusicin atheism

[–]Gecko99 0 points1 point ago

When I was about 19 years old (I'm 28 now) I learned that there was some controversy between scientific ideas about evolution and Christian ideas about origins that are founded in the Book of Genesis. I became interested in this controversy and I did my best to learn about both sides and I found the creationist side of things to be full of frauds and fake evidence and strawman accounts of what evolution really is. The evolution side is based on strong evidence from a number of branches of science. I'm most impressed by the findings of evolutionary developmental biology, which show that similar biochemical cascades are present across just about all animal life. They can help trace a tree of life that goes back to the most ancient branches of the metazoans. But the transitional, branching sequences of fossils, which link birds and whales and hominids to their ancient ancestors, are convincing and beautiful as well. I have agreed with the position that there's no need for a god to shape life into its past and present states. Natural explanations do a better job. I'm an atheist because I don't think a god is necessary for things to be how they are.

"A fatwa was announced in a mosque on May 11, stating that any woman using a cell phone will have acid thrown in her face" by iezvzin atheism

[–]Gecko99 0 points1 point ago

"I think it is time for our society to forcefully stop such people who not only violate the dignity and safety of women citizens, but also give a bad name to Islam, a religion which places a priority on the dignity of women."

I have heard claims such as this many times. In what ways does Islam prioritize the dignity of women? All I hear about it indicates that the governments of Islamic nations force women to live an almost animal-like existence, and individual Islamic men will commit horrific crimes against women. This fatwa, about throwing acid in their faces, comes from a former legislator who also wants to end the education of women.

Your links don't work. They're not clickable.

The small sunglasses are what I'd classify as a medium.

The thin-framed glasses have no frames. The medium framed glasses have thick frames.
