Florida Student Asks Obama about Israel's Human Rights Violations at Tampa Townhall - Obama looked visibly uncomfortable with the question, spoke slowly in response and skirted the question. by Mind_Virusin politics

[–]Gates9 0 points1 point ago

I agree, but it is still disappointing to see him refuse to recognize that Israel is in fact committing human rights violations, and we are simultaneously paying Israel a metric shit-ton of money. Some of that money has to be facilitating those abuses. In that sense the response does seem a bit skewed. That, and the fact that he said "first, Palestine has to recognize Israel", as if the modern nation of Israel were there first. I understand that Israel is pretty much our only ally in the region, that this is a political powder keg, and that he has to walk on egg shells over it, but come on. You can't bullshit a bullshitter. Anyway he said what he had to say and I don't hold it against him too mich. We need to get Congress to act right, and find a way to check the Israel lobby if we want to fix this.

Iranians did this during the "Green Revolution".

I believe this is one of the peaceful techniques prescribed by Gene Sharp.

"Do not follow false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?"

Matthew 7:15-16

Sounds to me like what you got yourself is some grade A thornbushes and thistles right there.

Sorry Atheists. I'm not religious, but I do find that the Bible has it's clever little allegories. I have a hard time repressing the urge to use them in response to clearly bigoted or otherwise intolerant Christians, or accounts thereof.

Unfortunately, despite the validity of what you are saying, there have already been instances of violence and vandalism at occupy events. This will be used to justify deadly force. Or perhaps ktf23t is correct.

I suppose there is a requisite altitude for it to be considered "skydiving", but good point.

L. Ron Hubbard basically learned the cult racket from Aliester Crowley and the OTO. Even stole the Rosicrucian symbolism. He studied magic under Jack Parsons, the founder of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, then he stole his woman, his boat, and a bunch of his money. Parsons later exploded himself under mysterious circumstances in a simple chemical experiment in a shed in his backyard.

Here's a cool web comic about it.

Petition to stop the USDA from allowing industry to self-inspect chicken by MaximilianKohlerin politics

[–]Gates9 0 points1 point ago

Sinclair himself did not like the legislation that came as a result of his book, he viewed it as an unjustified favor to large meat packers partially because the U.S. taxpayer, rather than the packing companies, were to bear the costs of inspection at $30,000,000 a year.

I have never heard this before, I suppose I may be mistaken. A citation would be appreciated. I don't know what you mean by "US Taxpayer". The United States did not have a Federal income tax until 1913, the Pure Food and Drug Act was passed in 1906. Even so, just because aspects of the legislation were poorly implemented does not mean that it was not needed or effective.

"I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach." -Upton Sinclair

Surely you must know that the context of this quote is that he had intended to impact "the public's" opinions towards labor struggles, and instead it became a controversy about the meat industry.

Perhaps I should not have used the specific term "bottom line", as you so capitally put it. In my conversations with executives in the industry, I get the overwhelming impression that they view inspectors as a bane to their daily operations, and a waste of time and money. Operations personnel even moreso, as they ultimately have to answer for, and deal directly with these issues. I believe from personal experience that this industry should not "self-regulate", and could not effectively maintain public safety.

Also the USDA legislation was heavily backed by some of the biggest Packing plants...

Hmmm, I must admit that I hadn't heard that before. Care to provide a link or citation?
