It depends. If it is a fully encrypted disk and you plug it into a Windows 7 machine, you will see a prompt telling you that you have to format the disk before you can use it. You can ignore that and try to mount the volume in TrueCrypt, but without the password you'll get nothing. Every HDD I own is full-disk encrypted with TrueCrypt. Just plugging it in to a machine, you'll never be able to know what's on there. I could take that HDD and do forensic analysis on it and tell you that there's data on the drive, but again, without the decryption key, I won't be able to tell you what the data is.

If I have, say, a 1TB HDD with a 500GB TrueCrypt container on it, you'll see a 500GB file with a .TC extension.

I have mentioned a number of times before that I work in data forensics, and have had a few people request an AMA.

Unfortunately, almost everything I know and have done has been under an NDA. I have some... Interesting... Stories, but I wouldn't really be able to share much.

One story that I can share is one of the funnier things that has happened. We did a data collection for a law firm that shall remain nameless (very well known) . The attorney that was handling the case wanted a copy of the data. We gave him a copy of the data for his own review. Later, we requested the data be returned to us, which was under our contract and chain of custody agreement. Apparently, instead of just returning the data we gave him, he sent us an entire copy of his external hard drive that he stored the forensic images on. I have never seen so much porn in my entire life. Some of it was "questionable" and was flagged by a "known file filter" in our forensic review tools. Needless to say, the person in question no longer practices law.
