False Dichotomy

A Response to "Reddit Makes Me Hate Atheists" by DoctorOMGWTFin atheism

[–]Fallacy_Nazi 0 points1 point ago

Did it occur to you that the comments I "chose to show" were the highest rated at the time I posted?

  • Argument from popularity fallacy

Did it occur to you that after my post, more supportive comments to the OP were upvoted and added? Nah, probably not.

  • Begging the question

I never said "all male members of /r/atheism are sexist, perverted assholes." You're right, that is total bullshit and also a stupid, obvious strawman. Tell me, would you accept this response from a Catholic? "Sure, if you highlight the pedophiles in any organization, that organization will look bad. But look at all the charity work we do!"

  • Strawman
  • Tu Quoque

Would you accept it from a fundamentalist Christian? "Sure, if you pick out just the Bible verses about slaves and oppressing women, any book will look bad. But look at all these verses about loving your fellow man and giving to the poor! Look at how much joy people derive from this book."

  • Strawman
  • Tu Quoque

No, you wouldn't. You would expect those people to police their own community.

  • Moving the goalpost fallacy

You would demand that they strongly renounce those amongst them who are causing harm. And that's what I'm asking of r/atheism.

I do believe the community was doing just that. And ironically, you chose to malign the whole community in an outside condemnation rather than "police the community" yourself.

If so, then call upon your moderators to facilitate intelligent discussion. Ask them to demonstrate compassion, and ask your fellow Redditors to do the same by downvoting their obnoxious comments and publicly calling them out on their behavior. When we raise the social cost of being a bigot, fewer people will be bigots.

If that doesn't concern you at all, then you're just as much a part of the problem as people who justify their misogyny with religion. Think about it.

what do you call the fallacy where somebody is pointing out something, and the counter argument is this person is supposedly distracting from something worse thus hijacking the original point of the debate/question?

It's typically a Red Herring.

The classic "B..b..but Clinton!" meme is a Tu Quoque fallacy. It's also known as, "Two wrongs don't make a right."

"Bush lied about WMDs"

"B..b..but Clinton was impeached!"

That's probably also a variation of Appeal to Popularity. They're appealing to something commonly known; if it's not commonly known, then it's an appeal to authority if it's not evidential.

RP would defer regulation of abortion to the states and doesn't think the government has any business being involved in marriage; therefore, his personal views are pretty irrelevant. Same goes for evolution.

Even in science there are plenty of "we don't know exactly why things work, but it does".

In science theories are open to being revised or thrown out completely. There are many fields of chiropractice which are not science based and still being practiced. (as the OP referenced regarding adjusting infants)

So not believing in global climate change or evolution is "the voice of reason?"

He's a man of honor and principle, he's not a fucktard who's going turn an ass puppet for the rich.

Ron Paul: a) doesn't believe in church-state separation; he doesn't believe in evolution; he doesn't believe in global warming; he's a MD who claims there is no such thing as a "medically-necessary" abortion. Whatever "honor and principals" he espouses seems to be something different from logic and rationality.

As recently reported in the New York Times, military personnel who identify themselves as “Atheists” have requested chaplains to tend to their spiritual needs.

This sounds a bit ridiculous. Does anyone have any citation for this claim?

I think religion is a form of psychotherapy, and along those lines I think anyone, especially people in a stressful environment, would benefit from being counseled by people who have experience in mental health. Instead of chaplains, the military should employ more psychologists and related therapists -- I could see atheists inquiring about that. But why would an atheist need tending to his "spiritual needs?"
