A friend of mine found this on her car... by Justgot_herein WTF

[–]Exaflood 1 point2 points ago

Why would this note be printed? If this actually happened, don't you think the person would have made a hand-written note? Why would they go searching for a printer just to put some smug comment on a stranger's car?

Oh yes, because karma.

Thanks for the advice! This is very helpful! I do code, but my father is the expert so he can help me with the harder stuff.

That sounds like a good idea, thanks!

Thanks for the feedback. I've thought about this project for a long, long time. I've figured most of it out, but I haven't really written down my notes, so here goes. Hopefully this will give you a better idea of what I'm trying to do.

I go to a school that is notorious for surveilling students' social network activity and making sure that their life outside the classroom follows the same rules and morality code as dictated by the school inside the classroom. Students with confiscated cell phones are even required to give their passcode so the administration can browse through their text message history. Naturally, this feels like a violation of privacy for students, who are often unaware that the student handbook sanctions "random searches" of personal belongings or social networks. I wanted to create a private social network that disallows any access from staff or administration. Everything is a "walled garden." I want to do this because:

  • It would be a fun project.
  • It would be useful to students.
  • I could potentially package it up and sell it to other communities.
  • It would piss off the school administration, since there is absolutely nothing they can do to stop me.

So this is what I plan to offer with Ryyme (pronounced rhyme):

  • A dedicated collaboration page, where students can work on homework, class projects, or share notes
  • An open directory of student information (like you said in your post)
  • A small-focus friend system, with groups of friends being allowed to form their own "posses"
  • Facebook wall import/export
  • Site-wide private / public (whichever you choose) chatroom. All users would be able to access a public text or audio chatroom. Posses can also form their own chatrooms.

These are a few of the ideas I had. I've made quite a few concepts for the site design and how it would function, but I'm going to start over again.

I'll tweak my ideas a bit and post the results later.

Hi! Ok, how do I start? How did you learn?

Thanks for the feedback! I know that everyone wants to reinvent Facebook, but here I'm doing something different. There will be a lot of features that Facebook lacks, such as public schoolwork collaboration, a public photo sharing app, and complete isolation from school staff.

What I had in mind was to have no "Register" or "Log In" buttons. When you type your name in, the site will check to see if your name is is the database of applicable students. If it isn't, you get an error message. If it is, the site then runs a check to see whether or not you've created an account, and directs you through the appropriate process. This sounds intricate, but it results in an experience that requires less effort.

Most people in my school aren't very tech savvy, so my idea was to present the registration system one line at a time. It's just as quick as any other registration system, but instead of clicking on the next field, you click "Next." The next field is then auto-selected. And I do have to require an email address. The purpose of this is to filter out school staff emails, so they can't join. Also, password retrieval. Thanks for the feedback!

I know some basic concepts, such as the syntax. I got confused pretty quickly with this one programming book when it threw like 7 different kinds of variables in my face at once. I got really confused when I had to learn everything about int, float, *, structs, long, double, and I think there's more I'm forgetting. I have pretty much forgotten what I've learned by now, unfortunately.

I threw out the flyer for my high school's programming class after the first item listed under "What you will learn" was "how to create a folder." So yeah, my school doesn't offer any competent classes.

Any Objective-C books you would recommend to absolute novices?

It helps to know that. I'm constantly making a mockup for some project I want to do and flip-flopping between 5 different colors. Blue is usually the first to go. It's just so cliché.

For this mockup I was deciding between orange and red, so I compromised: orangered.

Thanks for the advice! I'd considered doing an subtle ultra-light-gray texture (even subtler than Subtle Patterns), and I'll look into it some more. I considered making the color scheme a light blue, but then I realized that everything is blue in social networks.

As for coding it, it will be tough, but I can do it. I've worked on similar projects in the past that involved a user-management system for my school, but not this complex (and way, waaaay uglier).

I like it but I hear that AMD has some driver issues. I thought that the 680 was the superior card.

That is something I hadn't considered. You both make a strong argument; kickstart the movement with official direction, then let the community take over once we have momentum and we are sustainable.

Two things:

  1. Again, we are not marketing yet. Not until we have made more progress.
  2. Please don't use that logo. If you insist, you don't even have to use our official logo (though I recommend). But that logo looks like something... else.
