You are completely correct. Lineage, success and destination is basically "the chicken and the egg". Depending on your view/motivation it can can be un-taoist. To me the path is the goal. I see lineage as a path that is tried and true. It's also very possible for the individual to blaze a new trail, but I tend to think that is rare. I do think that sometimes it's necessary to hack your way through the forest alone in order to find path. Much respect and many paths.

Personally, I don't buy brownestrabit's take. Lineage is very important. It basically serves as a track record for success. If you're off on your own, without a guide who comes from a proven lineage, you're like a rowboat in the middle of the ocean. You can row and row, but you aint going nowhere. This is totally my opinion. I respect brownestrabit's take, but I just don't buy it.
