Don't forget to mention schools, roads, road signs/traffic signals, police departments and waste management. Just to name a few things.

Exactly. Social programs in general are viewed as handouts, not a reinvestment into the country.

An evening with my fiancee's Evangelical, conservative Christian family by Wolfmanateein atheism

[–]DBM 1 point2 points ago

They will go through the misery that I did--that my fiancee has, and is still, going through--when they see that the world doesn't fall in line with the things they've been told. Some of them may be ostracized from everything they know and love, or pretend to be something they aren't for fear of rejection, for the rest of their lives. And I want to reach out and argue on their behalf.

This applies to so many more things in life than just religion. Very well put!

Find healthy, frugal recipes. It really isn't that hard to have a balanced diet on a budget. You'll feel better and your mind will be sharp.

I want to do it, but I'm afraid that I can't afford it by undecidedvolunteerin AmeriCorps

Hit up craigslist or padmapper and, of course, reddit to find a place.

I am currently in Orlando for Public Allies, an americorps sponsored program. I actually found my roommates on reddit, but I can not stress enough that you need to look early. The problem I ran into a lot was that since I was still in Missouri at the time, I could not physically tour any places that actually responded to my request for leasing. I'm not sure if it was because they were afraid of being scammed, or if it wasn't financially beneficial to 'hold out' on leasing a room until a month down the road instead of having someone rent it who was already available. It was a frustrating search, but with sites like those mentioned above, there are plenty of people with unique situations that would fit your needs.

I realize this post is old, so I hope it still is helpful. Good luck to you!

Atheist GGG @ Thanksgiving by theroamingnome85in funny

I didn't assume you were an atheist from your comment. I was just pointing out that targeting specific groups happens quite often, especially when it comes to religion. Honestly, I didn't even notice this was in r/funny. I'll read things in a different light next time. Thanks for pointing that out :)

I don't know why OP had to target a specific group.

Isn't /r/atheism filled with this?

I work with and around a bunch of volunteers. Honestly, volunteering your time (ideally in a field closely related to where your job seeking) is a great idea. You get to network, it gets you out of the house and away from sending out resumes for 8 hours a day. You don't have to spend a ton of time doing it either. I know countless people who started volunteering, used it as a networking opportunity and as a way to give back to the community, and now have good jobs.

Former boy scout, current non-believer here. Don't let that one phrase deter you from signing them up. Scouts really can teach kids valuable lessons for life and the outdoors (and not religious ones). Yea the word God comes up in the oath, but for fuck's sake you don't have to believe everything you say. Just bite the bullet, say the word, but don't believe that part. Don't waste an entire opportunity because one thing bothers you. Maybe scouts has changed, but until you highlighted that phrase in the contract, I didn't even remember that the word God came up in any meeting or scouting event. What I do remember is the campouts and learning valuable life skills from an early age (budgeting, leadership, outdoor skills).

I'll definitely have to give that a shot. I use them with the same presentation, but Texas rig it with great success.
