Picking Apart Raw Food by NoWoo2in skeptic

If you're not my doctor or wife I could give two flying fucks what you think of my diet. I fry all my milk in bacon grease and then suck it through a straw made from the hollowed out femur of a baby panda.

NOTHING irritates me more than someone chiming in on what I eat.

"You know those chickens suffer before they're slaughtered?" Not nearly as bad as your mere presence makes me suffer... I hope you live through a fire.

Not aimed at NoWoo2, just airing some pent up anger.

This is an excellent book that covers most major scientific subjects. More than that, it's a great read.

If you're looking for more physics related stuff, this is a pretty easy read and even has a NOVA series that accompanies it.

I served 4 years in the US Army and can tell you, unequivocally, there are plenty of gays in the military. In fact, I had one gay roommate and a guy across the hall only dated transvestites. Our unit never had any unexplained natural disasters. Although, we did have some interesting parties.

I would also like to note that there were two lesbian soldiers in my unit. I'm pretty sure they could have made a porn in the motor pool and the post commander would have financed it with the command sergeant major as the cameraman.

Although, it's my experience that gay girl sex isn't really viewed as that bad. It's when you start playing bottom rockets that the fundies get their panties in a ruffle...

I had a similar journey to you - although mine is a little further along than yours (by 10 years or so) - and many of my circumstances were the same as yours. (Different denomination, but otherwise, strikingly similar.)

I distinctly remember a period of years when the idea of admitting to myself that there was no goD was almost paralyzing. I kept thinking, "but what if I'm wrong?" Eventually, I decided that I had tried my best to find the truth, and whether by his anger or by his grace, I could face him with an honest heart and any goD worth believing in would honor that.

From that point forward, for me - this is not any attempt at prognostication - I was on a slippery slope to atheism. It works great for me, even with a Christian wife. I still attend church with her and go sometimes, on my own, to Quaker meetings - their life philosophies are so close to mine that none of us care about my non-belief.

As for advice, I'm not going to give you much. Besides the fact that no 10 or so paragraphs really tell me who you are, it wouldn't matter anyway. You'll find your own way, one way or another - by his anger or his grace.

However, if it's movies you love watch as many as you can. Attend church with your wife - if need be, find a church you can agree on. Listen to music, take walks in the park, find/join/create groups of people who share your interests.

It's a truism but life is about the journey and not the destination. Enjoy it while you can because, by his anger or by his grace, it could end at any time.

goD speed and keep us informed.

Which is probably a necessary evil given the size and diversity of the communities we now live in.

The alternatives might be an infinite number of news sources (which blogs approximate and have proven themselves to be largely as useles as the Mass Media they attempt to displace) or no information - which is clearly a step backward.

I agree with Walter Lippmann. It's not necessarily the system that's so bad - although it is, in fact bad - it's the consumers who attend to life with so little interest as to make the system necessary.

A Response to Dr. Phil's scolding of Farmville Mom by Pwoggyin cogsci

As an ex WoW 'addict', I can tell you that unplugging and walking away does work, but but that's the ends and not the means. As a person who suffers from manageable OCD, I basically had to wait it out until I found something else to keep me occupied.

I disagree with the article, though, on the point that the instant gratification makes it worse. In my experience (read: in my mind) obsessing about it is enough. I need not have played WoW to feed my urges, I could have read about it online, talked with fellow players, design keybinding setups, etc. But maybe WoW lends itself better to that, as it's potentially a very complicated and complex game. I don't play Farmville, so I can't use it as a reference point.

Interesting article that addresses something I've been curious about. I occassionally look at the Vibram Five Fingers shoe and wonder what sorts of activities they would work for. Their website has a most types of activities listed - except the one I'd be most interested in.

The bulk of my outdoor time is spent hiking. I live in the Sierra Nevadas and I suspect that the trails (much less off-trail hiking) would be too rough to allow it in these shoes. Basically, I think I'd end up getting them and then trying to find activities that they'd work with.

Has anyone ever tried them?

That doesn't seem right. You can't PROVE to me that adamantium doesn't exist. I read it in a book and they can't print it unless it's true.

Chavez Writes Off Haiti's Oil Debt to Venezuela by glparramattain socialism

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In all seriousness, from someone who has only recently realized my personal philosophies fit very well with socialism, what does Venezuela get from doing this?

I'm not so naive to think they're wiping this debt just because it'll make things easier for this impoverished nation. It seems that if that were true, they would have just given them the oil in the first place.

So, what's the catch?

Edit: to avoid being attacked, I'm still adjusting to viewing the world through the new lense of a semi-focused socio-political philosophy and am looking for real guidance/help, not a heaping helping of crap.

I had a dog for more than 10 years. He had moved all over the country with me and there were many times that he was my only companion. We knew, loved and understood each other completely.

His death was undescribably devastating. I've moved on with my life, but getting over his death isn't even something that makes much sense to me.

But that's easily corrupted into the same sort of narcissism...

There do seem to be a significant number of people claiming that dietary change is easing gut pain (often due to constipation) and increasing the quality of life for some autistic children.

Not to nit-pick, but couldn't you say that of anyone with gut pain? It seems a change of diet is the most obvious first step.

Is there a specific Autistic Diet? (I'm really asking...)

Yeah, fuck little kids. They should die because their parents are scared that something that is supposed to help (or be benign) might actually make it worse. It's not necessarily stupidity that leads a parent to be that protective - maybe just gullibility. But we're all gullible to a certain degree.

I mean, only if those parents had a few examples...

  • Clorofluorocarbons
  • Tetra-ethyl lead (happily discovered by the same guy who discovered cfc's - Thomas Midgley, Jr.)
  • Agent Orange
  • The nineteenth amendment
  • goD
