Came here to write this because I am a nerd

George Will asserts that Student Loans are an 'entitlement' and that most of them can be paid off in less than one year. by deangreenzin politics

[–]CowboyDan 4 points5 points ago*

Chillax, guys. The one-year-payoff thing is indisputably dumb, but "entitlement" has a specific definition that fits here. It's a descriptive rather than a normative statement.

[EDIT: dumb, not done. That was done of me]

Racist lady gets what she deserves by leebaain videos

Hard to hear what she's saying, but she certainly comes off, at first glance, as mentally ill, if she simply started harassing a black guy for no reason as she rolled past.

So yeah, don't really see this as a blow for civil rights.

Was anyone else reminded of the excellent 200 Bad Comics (see #8)?

Also, does anyone know where this is? I've been scouring the comments page for an answer but can't find one anywhere.

It's safe to say that the question "Should I get the abortion that my cat is recommending?" had never been spoken aloud or written before this fateful day.

When MTV put's out a PSA comparing America to Nazi Germany, you know things are B A D. by anitasangerin videos

[–]CowboyDan 25 points26 points ago*

Okay, I'll bite. Why do we know things are bad because MTV put out an emotionally powerful but overall pretty superficial ad?

I'm going to be the crotchety old man here (and I'm only in my late twenties!) and say that there's a tendency among (even) younger people who are new to politics to react to every setback, every new piece of information, as something which presages catastrophe.

There are profound problems in the US right now, first and foremost our historically high level of inequality. It's awful and there's no sign it's going to get better anytime soon, although there is a glimmer of hope in the fact that we're talking about it a lot more than we used to. But in many ways the world is, overall, becoming a freer and better place -- the Arab Spring is the best recent example.

I just wish people would make substantive arguments instead of posting stuff like this while shaking their heads gravely. It reflects a lack of critical thinking.

My newspaper almost ran this photo on the front page. The press room guys caught it. by Gargarbinksin funny

You can obviously crop (as long as you're not cropping out something that matters) or alter the image to make it more visible. You just can't substantively change anything in the photo -- I don't really think I need to define what "substantive" means here, but what someone is wearing counts.

'[I]s the print on a child's shirt really essential to the central theme of our story?'

By that logic, anything in the photo not central to the story is fair game for whatever photoshopping you want.

You just can't edit a photo like that. Would doing so be the most serious violation of journalistic ethics in the history of journalism? No. Would it be a violation? Yes.

That drove me so freaking crazy. 70% of the time I would marvel at the gameplay and the remarkable mini-New-York they built, and 30% of the time I would wonder how all the relationship crap could possibly have survived play-testing, given that none of it was any fun. Big part of the reason I never got very close to finishing the game.

Don't worry, when I was 18 I was "without reference" too.

I liked it a lot too, and echo what others have said about her looking more or less like a real woman.
