Andy Rubin said for Face Unlock they had to "slow down the process" because it was too fast to make folks believe that any security at all was involved. Is there any way to speed it back up? by caliberin Android

I read an article once about how fingerprint locks on cars in South Africa were causing more people to get their fingers chopped off.

I also read an article about how to lift a fingerprint from a person's coffee mug and then use that to break into their fingerprint scan protected computer, and the moral of the story was that good passwords are actually pretty hard to top as far as security goes.

Wow. Thanks for the feedback. I didn't realize our site was so ambiguous. I'll forward your response, verbatim, to our marketing team and to our web team. It's tough to find honest critique.

MakerBot is a consumer-level printer. We have one at our office and use it to prototype ideas for Sphero. It takes a long time to make a thing, though, and the bricks would be very rough and hard to use as Legos.

Tennessee Man loses $22,000 to cops. No charges filed, no arrest made. "If somebody told me this happened to them, I absolutely would not believe this could happen in America." That was the reaction of a New Jersey man who found out just how risky it can be to carry cash through Tennessee. by Mind_Virusin politics

Andy Griffith and Mayberry

Why would you say it were true then? Because of a fictional TV show from that time? That was the same period in history that cops were helping to lynch black people.

Atheists, how do you explain the extremely low chances for us existing as just a coincidence? by bryce1234in DebateAnAtheist

If every planet in the Universe were a hand picking cards, and if only the hand with the Royal Flush resulted in life as we know it, it would look to us like we just reached in and pulled out a Royal Flush on the first try because it's not obvious that the whole Universe is pulling cards all the time.

This is called the "anthropic principle". It's the perspective we have that makes us look specially created, and so unlikely, because we're only now starting to see the wide depth of the Universe and how actually small we are.

only by racists

Marginalizing racism to "just a joke" is racism. You don't have to be a full blown racist to participate in the system of racism. More than simply a label for people, racism is also a system of oppression.

You seem to think there's some kind of clear line where there's a bunch of cross-burning KKK members and neo-Nazis over there, and they're the "racists" and there's just no connection to you. That's not how it works. It's a complex system, and the "stop being so sensitive" folks (you) are doing the crucial part of it called "victim silencing", which is an essential component of racism as a system. Basically, you, a person living on the white side of the issue, are telling offended people to shut up. Then, you act like it's you who's being attacked when you're called an awful jackass. No one attacked you. You came here, and you involved yourself by throwing your oar in and defending a person who called someone a nigger. That's the side of the issue you chose to take the time out of your day to defend.

Oh cool. A teacher that doesn't understand why a person of privilege that has never had to face it, should avoid saying "nigger". Hope my non-white son doesn't have to encounter you!

I guess I just assumed you were a highschool kid, because your argument is typically a high-school level one: "oh, why don't the victims of racism just stop being so sensitive about it (and I would know, even though I have absolutely no perspective on the topic)". AKA the "it's the black people's fault for being so offended" argument. Related to the "Let me, a white person, tell you how you should feel about racism" argument. Also related to the "they say it, why can't I" bullshit, which you seemed to sort of pull out of your ass for a second there, you know, using the "everyone at my school does it" argument. Awesome to know you take your moral examples from the people "at your school". Good work. Glad you're around children (I'm not actually glad about that).

Nigger is one of the most common used words at my school, by all races.

Oh okay then. It's all good, guys! bgrugby60 says it's fine "at his school", so everything is fine now! It doesn't offend bgrugby60 or "his school", so it shouldn't offend anyone, obviously.

Also, I'm too old to be on reddit anymore. It's like dropping pebbles into a well. I'm not making any difference here at all.

EDIT: What would you say, off the top of your head, is "your school's" favorite Pokemon card? Is Pokemon still a thing at "your school"? Just curious. We need to know what "your school" thinks about these things. TIA.

EDIT2: Do you guys still play Pogs? I used to play Pogs. Is that still a thing?

Things that offend people other than me are just them being too sensitive.

To Atheists: Let's Talk Marriage by nasch890in DebateReligion

[–]ColdSnickersBar 14 points15 points ago

I think a lot of atheists here are trying to argue that marriage didn't start as a Christian thing, but that's pretty irrelevant in my opinion, to the OP's question. I think the OP is mostly asking what marriage means to us. Basically "if you don't think magic is real, why do rituals?"

To me, the fact is that rituals have power. I don't think it's supernatural power, or godly power. Taking the time to have a ceremony adds importance to a thing. It happens everywhere, and not just for marriage. We have graduation ceremonies, birthday parties, baby showers, anniversaries, funerals, initiations, and the list goes on and on. While I was in the Marine Corps, I witnessed an amazing secular ritual machine. The Marines have traditions and rituals for everything. Even the red stripe on our trousers has deep meaning. Ask a Marine what that stripe means sometime.

A wedding ceremony helps to cement the value and importance of the marriage. I had a ceremony for my wedding, and it was a secular one, but a meaningful one for me and my wife.

One of the hard thing about economies as we know them (in capitalist, wealth-driven societies), is that they really require more young people than old people to function properly. They're like Ponzi Schemes that work because enough of the original investors are expected to die before they can collect so the survivors will be okay.

Anyway, modern economies require growth in order to be healthy. Growth requires constant increases in population, production, and resource exploitation.

Wasn't an article posted just yesterday here saying that EA stocks were the lowest they've ever been?

They were on NPR yesterday talking about this. The representative from EA actually said that they believe this is because Zynga beat them to the new way of gaming, and they now want more than anything to do what Zynga does. The whole interview was about them wanting to be Zynga.

And I see it as Reddit accepting racism and misogyny. I support a state that doesn't censor free speech, yet I wouldn't allow racism and misogyny in my home, or business. Reddit let's it in their business. This community seems to think it's "cute". It's not. It's disgusting. To me, that says something important about both Reddit and the community.

Free speech means that you support the idea that a state shouldn't censor speech. Reddit is not the government.
