Four cops injured, one stabbed in protest melee. "Peaceful" protesters, please leave our police and our city alone. by Epicwarrenin chicago

Indeed. Peaceful protesters, you can stay. "Peaceful" protesters, please leave.

Shame on you protesters: What I saw from the protesters over the weekend made me not want to support their cause. Details inside. by moderate_extremistin chicago

[–]ChainChompsky 4 points5 points ago

Thank you. It seems this subreddit is gung-ho about bashing the protesters in general and praising the cops in general. The thousands in each group seemed respectful. However, yes, there were more than a few vandals AND club-swingers. This is why no one wanted NATO here in the first place.

I think we all anticipated protest armageddon. No SEALs dropped out of any helicopters, for example. So things were pretty smooth... Not counting the shoving, masked agitators and those cops who clubbed them in response. Wish we had less of both.

Seems to be in retaliation to getting hit by an anarcho-syndicalist flag. Which seems to be in retaliation for several people having clubs swung at them. Which might be in retaliation for people throwing things. Which was a "measured response" within the black bloc to being dispersed. Which was, of course, the reaction to people standing in the street when they had been asked to leave. And so it goes.

I expected someone to get the joke, or failing that to at least get the point. Let me say again. Stay safe. Let me say clearly. Be prepared. See you in Chicago.

Caol Ila 12 - a review by ChainChompskyin Scotch

[–]ChainChompsky[S] 8 points9 points ago

I'm picky about Islays. For example, I found the experience of Laphroaig Quarter Cask to be a lot like vomiting up several 9volt batteries. Anyway. A notable ingredient of Johnnie Walker, Caol Ila doesn't get enough love in my opinion. Full disclosure: I have only sipped a glass of the 12, on a couple of occasions. In my original "notes" I gave it a B grade, but I felt it needed a proper review. So, I recently revisited it as part of a whisky flight. The bottle is brown. Gotta love brown-bottle Islays! 43%, $55.

Nose: peat and potting soil.

Taste: smooth, sweet-peat and umami notes -- grass, okra, seaweed, bell peppers, and I want to say asparagus. Finishes with smoke, peat again, and a little brine.

Quite good but a tad too expensive for me, I'd buy CI12 all the time if I was, say, Tagg Romney. 88/100

Old Pulteney 12 - a review by ChainChompskyin Scotch

[–]ChainChompsky[S] 1 point2 points ago

There are no surprises. No "bonuses" if you will. Nothing lingers in your mouth reminding you that you just drank scotch and that scotch loves you. This finish doesn't take away from the dram but it doesn't add anything either. In my humble opinion.

From the northernmost distillery in the Highlands, it's the frequently-packaged-with-free-toys Old Pulteney 12. Cool looking bottle. 43%, $38.

Nose: honey nut cheerios.

Taste: first a very small bite, light sherry, and some oily-heaviness, then smooth, sweet malt, honey, butterscotch, sea salt, and peppercorn. Finish is coppery. Peat? Nowhere.

Good, even with not much of a finish. Long and sweet. This is a malty malt. Always a great buy. 90/100

Thanks, and I shall! No, not much sherry influence -- not much going on at all, in my opinion. Loved the 10yo, though.

Benromach Traditional -- my first review by ChainChompskyin Scotch

[–]ChainChompsky[S] 2 points3 points ago

A NAS offering from the good people over at Benromach, who have quite a share of shelf-space at Binny's in Chicago. This one has no sherry finish like his 10yo big brother. Very light in color. 40%, $30.

Nose: delicate - smoke, dust, straw, and sherry.

Taste: a small bite, caustic, sherry, a sour creaminess - gonna say fingernail polish, and some peat. Finishes with smoke, apple, burnt plastic, and sweet'n low.

Damn. Was my first review a malt I didn't like? It sure was, Other Barry. 78/100
