Try some of the lecturers on campus. In the school of IT, chat to Hami about anything coding related. He's a really good lecturer and can point you in the right direction. Also Blaine, as his specialty is web dev.

Does something like DD-WRT exist for switch firmware? by CYCLADESin networking

[–]CYCLADES[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for your reply. Is there any kind of functionality which is inherently software only? Is there anything else theoretically modifiable other than simply the UI?

Something like the addition of a telnet interface would probably tide me over.

It's pretty damn pricey, but at least Woz is the half of Apple I respected more - the engineer.

Noob question about Wifi in my dorm.. by jpesh1in networking

[–]CYCLADES 1 point2 points ago

I'll try and keep it abstract for you. The concept of DHCP is a protocol which assigns clients addresses to communicate on a network. At the moment, clients in the dorm will (likely) be assigned DHCP addresses from the infrastructure in place which allows devices to connect to the network. DHCP is also built into most consumer grade routers, so that all devices connected to the router are able to interconnect on a LAN.

Once upon a time we had a user plug in his router into our University halls' infrastructure, and the DHCP protocol running on his router was assigning its own addresses to users in the halls faster than University equipment was (DHCP is basically request an address, wait for a response). This resulted in those users being assigned an address from his router, which actually didn't actually provide them with any connectivity at all. This meant a large amount of users within the closest proximity to this router lost connectivity from the actual University network. We had to find the user by using TCPdump to filter for DHCP traffic on an older switch in that block .. it made a good case for the University to begin putting in smarter equipment.

How to prevent this? Don't plug the cable from the ethernet jack into a LAN port on your router unless you have it set to bridge mode, or even simpler, plug into the WAN port instead, creating your own local network.

Hope this helps..

Noob question about Wifi in my dorm.. by jpesh1in networking

[–]CYCLADES 1 point2 points ago

If you cause rogue DHCP on your router, you can potentially knock off other users using the network.. depending where the dorms infrastructures natural boundaries are. You can bet they will find you then.

Make sure if you do a router to use a channel that doesn't interfere with any existing 802.11 aswell.

Minimise your footprint - hidden SSID, MAC spoofing, etc.

I'd love to invest in Pacific Fibre. I wish there was an easy way to do so.

I'm sure /r/newzealand would be able to scrape together a tidy contribution.

Looking for help choosing an ICT Qualification by CaseusClayin KiwiTech

I'm currently studying toward a BCMS at Waikato. There are lots of decent programming specialisations in the CS major, or alternatively, if coding is right up your alley, there is also a Bachelor of Engineering, majoring in Software Engineering. You can find most of the info here (or here!), or alternatively you can download the PDF CS faculty handbook here.

It's done pretty damn well to equip me so far, but you have to have the drive to take some additional initiative. You're going to get crammed with a lot of different conceptual principles, but to really make it stick, you'll want to take those principles home each week and apply them. Get some projects going. Start up a github account or even start contributing what concepts you do learn to an open source project. Consider finding an internship so you start making what you learn relevant to you early on.

At the end of the day, it all depends what you want to end up doing. I started my tertiary education specialising in software design, but now I'm majoring in networking and wouldn't have it any other way. You can expect to change your mind a few times, but the BCMS (and associated degrees) at least offer a diverse range of different avenues to pursue inside the field.

If you have any other questions hit up a reply here or PM me, and I'll be happy to help.
