The Infamous Great Lakes Report by bretthullin aviation

[–]BobCollins 0 points1 point ago

I wonder if I was the only one who initially tried to figure out the context of a report concerning a plane manufactured by Great Lakes.

Part of that is probably because I have see many Great Lakes airplanes and have never heard of an air carrier named Great Lakes.

It's Official! Google Blog: We’ve acquired Motorola Mobility by technopwnin Android

Maybe together they could set a standard for official AndroidOS updates. I know that they blame it on the carriers, but Apple seems to be able to do it.

Just curious, and off topic, but does your name refer to the 1960s era Olds muscle car? My guess is that you aren't old enough to know the association.

Who would watch a "Big Bang Theory" without Penny? by BobCollinsin AskReddit

[–]BobCollins[S] -1 points0 points ago

This was not the result I expected. I find the antics of the main characters to be so over-the-top to be cringe-worthy, especially Sheldon. Penny, in her cute outfits, gives me something to dream about. Maybe I don't sufficiently relate to the level of geekness being portrayed.

Your link here does not seem to be the ticking bomb that would support your comments. I assume that what you saw in real-time was different.

Americans now consume an average of 4 bottles of water a week, the highest ever, despite years of environmental opposition by holdenkawfieldin environment

[–]BobCollins 5 points6 points ago

I don't understand why Coke or Nestle would steal public drinking water. The margins are so astronomical, there is no motivation for theft. ;-)

Yes, please point us to more info on what sounds like heavy-handed behavior. I did a quick search and couldn't find anything on it.

Of course, we all would like to hold the foundation to a higher standard, but we often accept very ugly behavior from commercial suppliers (Microsoft, Apple, Intel, etc.).

The (very) uneven distribution of DNS root servers on the Internet by meshnet_derpin darknetplan

[–]BobCollins 0 points1 point ago

Question: doesn't each DNS slave server have the "choice" which server or servers to use for their database? I would think that the operator of the slave would choose to avoid sources which were unreliable (or affected with "funny business"). Please educate me.

doesn't make me want to buy a product more than a pop-up would.

Actually, I am someone who will boycott products that are advertised with intrusive ads such as pop-up or pop-behind. I still don't use NetFlix because of this behavior.

All in, quite discouraging for a company that will go public with a valuation of more than $100 billion.

Maybe it won't.

I am trying to understand why we should care. It's a resource-for-performance thing and acquisition and location decisions are based on "acceptable" performance to the served users.

What I thought interesting was that there are more servers in europe than north america. Could that be due to fasters connections which increase load?

While I am also incensed by the story, one fact really stands out to me. No it is not the unloaded rifle. My interest was piqued when I learned that she was carrying $13,000 in cash with her, to pay for college and private high school tuitions. That someone would pay that size of bill to institutions in cash seems unusual. It would be interesting to ask a few college bursars to how often they get someone paying a ~$10,000 bill in cash.

Edit: corrected incorrect word usage.

Is your stuff falling apart? Thank Walmart. by aimbonicsin BuyItForLife

[–]BobCollins 1 point2 points ago

Unfortunately, the manufactures (for the most part) are not really creating higher quality products than what they sell through Walmart. I guess they have the same incentive that Walmart has to shorten their product's lifetime and sell you a replacement. Walmart is probably just accelerating a trend which was happening anyway.

Long lasting, thin with capacity man's wallet by Syllogism19in BuyItForLife

Their wallets look great, but I would suggest that you pass on the medium. I have had wallets like the medium with overlapping card slots and I regularly have cracked and broken credit cards. Much better to stack them as with their small or large.
