first world problem today by cahlimain SaltLakeCity

I just moved back to Utah Valley a year ago. I'd lived here four to five years previously. When I moved away you'd see someone of the African American persuasion very rarely. Now it's a daily thing. The university has brought quite the diverse group down here. Bohemian activities are flourishing too... It's made it a very strange place.

I made my VTOL using a shitload of RCS jets. Works great, but you spend a lot of time figuring out where to place them to center the lift.

Well aparrently even the USB Loader GX Google Code Page lacks the instructions on how to use NAND emulation with their software. So far the only successfull NAND emulation guide I have found was for WiiFlow.

Sorry, that's all I have for you.

[–]BloodyThorn 1 point2 points ago

Just curious, the only think you've done so far to get your NAND emulation working is "turning it on" in the "nand emulation thing"? If so you may be a few steps short. Honestly I've never done it myself, but I've read about it. And I was under the impression that it was more complex to get working than 'turning it on'.

Just in case that is the case, I found this tutorial that outlines what is involved.

[–]BloodyThorn 2 points3 points ago

I don't doubt it. I'm glad it's rarely practiced. But unfortunately not rare enough keep from making the news in the last decade. It's still repugnant, and it's really hard to imagine anything more brutal/repugnant than neonate mutilation. Metzitzah b'peh takes it to a higher level though. Yet you say they have worse rituals? I shudder to think.

[–]BloodyThorn 1 point2 points ago

That's understandable. The act is much too similar to masturbation for American comfort, I'm sure. And the US is certainly the kind of country that would fire one of the best Surgeon Generals it has ever had because she voiced support for masturbation in front of the United Nations (Joycelyn Elders).

Phimosis and Balanitis are two of the main conditions that circumcision is supposed to treat. But on phimosis;

"Robert S. Van Howe has argued that choosing to skip nonsurgical treatments for phimosis and go straight to circumcision may be influenced by non-medical considerations; he has also suggested that an inaccurate diagnosis of phimosis is sometimes used as a justification for elective circumcision so that it will be covered by a national health system or insurance plan. Moreover, one study has shown that attempting nonsurgical treatment of pathologic phimosis when it occurs in infants and children costs 27.3% less than primary circumcision."

Van Howe is a very notable anti-circumcision advocate though. The Wikipedia article on phimosis is pretty good. It gives some consistent information. Phimosis is a common, almost normal, condition and in most cases resolves itself. And yes, teaching an uncircumcised child to retract it's foreskin is on par with teaching a child to wipe it's butt.

So, just because circumcision does cure the condition, doesn't mean it can't be remedied in other ways. As Van Howe points out, many doctors will use a misdiagnosis of phimosis and balanitis to enforce their own world views.

You're welcome to my reference page. I posted it below.

My paper is very biased in the against direction though. The paper focused more around the push to circumcise Africa as an HIV prevention measure. Even though I included a few meta-analysis of them, I didn't include the three sub-Saharan RCTs that happened between 2003 and 2006. Those three trials were pretty flawed, and I included critiques on them from both sides. Unfortunately the RCTs were enough to convince important funding like The Bill Gates Foundation. Yes, Bill wants your wienie cut.

The argument is very divisive though. For every study you find saying that circumcision does something, I can find you a study saying that it does either nothing, or just the opposite. Not to mention if those three RCTs were true, you'd wonder why the United States and the Republic of Congo have HIV infection rates within the top ten in the world, while they are two of the most circumcised countries in the world.

Since the American Victorian era and the puritanical attitudes towards sex it spawned, people have claimed circumcision cured all sorts of things, including the ridiculous, like allergies, and masturbation. Over the years, common sense has been chipping away at these claims. But the circumcision proponents keep fighting back, and coming up with new claims. And it is just a select group of doctors that support it.

No major medical organization in the WORLD supports circumcision for non-therapeutic reasons. Unless you count the WHO, which is more of a political organization than a medical one.

Sorry, I'm not Jewish or very familiar with all things Jewy. Nor did I really want to go into detail with someone who was also unfamiliar with Jewish traditions. What I was mentioning was an orthodox version of brit milah called metzitzah b'peh, where the mohel sucks blood from the wound with his mouth. Just in case you were unaware of the Jewish tradition I was referring to.

I should have said the "orthodox way" rather than traditional. I would say I meant no disrespect, but the ritual is repugnant. If I was Jewish and I heard of either this procedure, or the herpes event, I'd renounce ;) Though I certainly didn't mean to offend a stranger.

But short answer to your question; No.

Long answer; Following this are some of the examples he quoted in his article. Death as a result of complications from circumcision have a variety of causes.

"The first was Julius Katzenstein in 1856 (New York Times) and the second was one-week-old Myer Jacob Levy in 1858 (New York Times). Both boys were circumcised by a Dr. Abrahams, and the same coroner reviewed both deaths. The coroner found that Abrahams had performed the surgeries properly, and that the boys died from blood loss as a result of parental neglect. Neither boy had received a follow-up examination."

"Allen Ervin, born 1985, was in a coma for more than six years before he died. He had been on life support after his brain was damaged from oxygen deprivation during his circumcision (The State, 1992)."

"Demetrius Manker was born in 1993 and died soon thereafter from blood loss. The coroner’s examination found a large, gaping wound on the underside of the boy’s penis extending almost to the scrotum. The coroner listed cause of death as blood loss due to penile circumcision (Welti, 1993)"

"A West Virginia child, whose name was withheld, was born in 1996 without incidence and circumcised prior to hospital release. A few days later, the parents rushed him to the emergency room because he was having seizures and his penis had turned green in color. He died the next day from septicemia (Ballad, 1997)."

"Dustin Evans, Jr., was circumcised soon after being born in 1998. The surgeon took so much shaft skin that the scar healed as a tight “collar” around his penis, preventing him from urinating. When he was later given an anesthetic in order to repair the damage, he immediately died of cardiopulmonary arrest (Giannetti, 2000)."

"In a 2004 Vancouver, Canada, incident, one-month-old Ryleigh McWillis was sent home from the hospital immediately following his circumcision. He later bled to death, his disposable diapers absorbing the small amount of blood from his circumcision wound necessary to send him into hypovolemic shock (Newell, 2004)."

"In 2008, 6-week-old Native American Eric Keefe died from massive blood loss. Hospital officials claimed his circumcision was not to blame, but instead faulted the parents because they had administered over-the-counter pain medication that, they also claimed, thinned his blood. The parents were not told about this possible complication (Verges, 2009)."

All of this from the article in question "Bollinger, D. (2010). Lost Boys: An Estimate of U.S. Circumcision-Related Infant Deaths. Thymos: Journal of Boyhood Studies"

Circumcisions by mohelim were taken into consideration. In the study the researcher (Dan Bollinger, Men's Studies Press, 2010) did give an example that happened just recently. I remember it from the news. It was a case where a mohel circumcised a baby in the traditional way (actually sucking the wound after it is done) and gave the child herpes, killing it in days.

While Jewish communities privatize their circumcisions, from what I understand, out of that specific grouping (privatized circumcisions) they are one of the minorities. There are well more non-doctor given circumcisions performed in Africa as manhood rituals. And again, from what I understand, most sects of Judaism typically train their mohel very well. And it is a simple operation by comparison.

But out of the real examples Bollinger gave of circumcision fatality, the bulk of them were not Jewish. He even gave an example of the first recorded fatality due to complications arising from circumcision. Not that this means anything. But you'd think if what you stated was the case, there'd be more examples from that subgroup. Most of them given were by doctors, in hospitals. Maybe per-capita. But there are well more American circumcision done than Jewish.

I just did a research paper on male circumcision. Figures on circumcision rates in the United States are hard to pin down. After finding mixed results from 30% to 90%, I settled on this;

50-60% of the male children in the United States are circumcised at birth. 60-80% of the male population in the United States is circumcised (the remaining number being added as adult circumcision). <4% of males in the United States, adult or child, develop a medical condition that circumcision would fix. <1% of the above 4% would require circumcision as therapy, as there have been newer procedures that treat these problems cheaper, and more effectively.

Also you have to consider that the more homogeneously Caucasian a population is(in the US), the higher the circumcision rate. Circumcision rate is low on the coasts, and starts getting higher as you work your way inland. The figures are also starting to go down because now sixteen different states have discontinued covering it with Medicaid. It was the reason circumcision rates declined in the UK from 50%ish (around WWII) to modern day at about 1-3%. NHS stopped paying for it.

Also something seldom talked about is death rate from complications due to circumcision. Parents are almost never told that death is a possible result from circumcision. And thanks to skewed documentation death rate is really, really hard to pin down. I read a study on it, not sure how serious I'd take it, but the guy estimated that approximately 140 children die each year from circumcision complications in the United States alone. Death rate was the primary reason NHS in UK stopped paying for it.

Ugh, I now know way more about circumcision than I wanted to.

I just spent a semester in college researching and writing about how much of an abomination male circumcision is. I didn't even touch female circumcision in my paper because how much worse it was. Despite it being essentially the same issue, I didn't have time to cover both. At least the proponents of male circumcision are going as far to conduct (questionable) studies to try to legitimize it as a preventative measure.

Nowhere is female circumcision practiced for anything other than religious reasons. I feel they are both forms of body mutilation, and while I don't think they should be outlawed, I think that parents circumcising their children, male or female, should be viewed the same as a parent who wants to get their neonate tattooed or pierced. With extreme repugnance and possibly legal action for endangering a child.

It's nothing more than a sexual kink supported by the religious, same as abstinence. The AMA, and AAP both state that it is unethical to perform non-therapeutic surgery on a non-consenting person. Which makes circumcision the one, and very widespread exception.

That being said, how I would feel about you? It's not your fault. If I was your partner, it would be an odd twist. It would certainly make oral sex challenging since the clitoris is my primary focus. But anyone who likes you will easily be able to overlook it. And as it has already been said, if I fell in love with you, I'd suggest you never let me meet your parents. I would carry nothing but contempt for them and would find it hard to be civil.

Not a lot of foresight in this. I don't think I'd ever setup a situation where not pulling a lever fast enough after digging out a damp block would drown my whole fort.

If you put the lever right next to the dig spot once it floods, you can't pull it. And since the lever can be anywhere on the map, there is no reason it should be right next to the potential flood area. Hell, seal the dwarf that you assign to pull it in with the lever. Walls are easy to build and tear down. Even better yet, seal in the dwarf who is digging out the damp. That way, he'll die, sure, but you can pull down the walls sealing him in AFTER you pull the lever. Minimal water spilt.
