TIL the Most Effective Economic Stimulus for an economy is: Direct Spending in Infrastructure, with a Multiplier of $1.75. [ Figure B ] by Tobar7in progressive

[–]Bhima 1 point2 points ago

And the United States has 2.2 Trillion dollars worth of outstanding repair and maintenance which needs to be done just to bring existing infrastructure up to legal code... not to mention the idea of expanding and improving things.

My god that looks like someone I know. I haven't talked to him in years. Perhaps I should mail him and ask. You know that would go over well.

The cheapest way is to not put them in a dryer to begin with... and your clothes will last longer as well.

Scientific American: "Heirlooms are actually feeble and inbred—the defective product of breeding experiments that began during the Enlightenment..." Reddit, can this be true? by dorkydragonin Permaculture

[–]Bhima 0 points1 point ago

I have to admit this whole thread turned out to be very disappointing for me. For the most part people either read Monsanto, rejected it and stopped thinking or thought of a handful of plants in their garden and stopped thinking.

The loss of the genetic reservoir of important agricultural crops is an extremely important problem that we face and as far as I have been able to teach myself the ethics and methods present in Permaculture represent a superior solution as compared to patent encumbered monocultural 20th century industrial agriculture that Monsanto represents.

Yet almost no one (who is interested in Permaculture) appears to be interested enough to even discuss it.

I've worked in R&D for medical diagnostic device manufacturers for more than 27 years. It's well known that all communication is monitored in these places. There is no way I would ever use company assets for personal or private communication. Nor would I attach a device owned by the company to my personal home network or internet connection (or visa-versa). I do not take company laptops or cell phones anywhere off company property.

These facts are exactly what has driven my interest in portable wireless devices and privacy.

Has anyone found a really good system of using the colored tagging? by thekaplanin Enhancement

[–]Bhima 2 points3 points ago

I use tagging a lot but I don't use colour until I've seen the account a few times. Then I try to categorize folks by the topics the comment on that interest me. Mostly this just helps me know who I'm responding (or more pointedly NOT responding to) to more clearly. Honestly I don't have a system which I think is logical... but I have used it so much that it is becoming more consistent. Ultimately I seem to be using colors to tag users are particularly enthusiastic about something or other who habitually post in reddits populated by users with starkly different opinions.

FWIW: I also stalk users using metareddit or redditinvestigator before responding to anything remotely controversial or in a reddit prone to controversy and drama. Then I try to make an accurate tag based on that for the future.

Also the fix for the asshole now being green is golden. I always suspected that being moderator was really feeding my inner asshole self.

[–]Bhima 0 points1 point ago

Ultimately it is. What he is asking for is a faster but still manual way to alert mods, via mod mail, that there is something in the mod queue. This is essentially making the mod mail indicator into a mod queue indicator as well.

The only reason that this idea is effective is that that there is a mod mail indicator on the Reddit front page but not a mod queue indicator and many mods are reading the front page but not the mod queue (or the RSS feed that reddit already provides).

This is really a design flaw in Reddit, which submitters are overcoming using mod mail.

Yes, this is most likely a bad video card. Last night I just finished diaster recovery from the the video card in my Mac Pro going bad and corrupting my system drive.

So my recommendation is that you take action sooner (and on your own terms) rather than than later.

[–]Bhima 0 points1 point ago

There is already a feature which notifies mods of submissions in the mod queue built into reddit and moderators can subscribe to as private RSS feeds as well.

Why they did not choose to have that queue signal the mod mail indicator also is beyond me.

Looking for cheap transportation. Try a motorcycle. This is my set up. by WaffleMoosein Frugal

[–]Bhima 4 points5 points ago

I have an old car, an old motorcycle, and an old bicycle. Most days with passable weather, I ride the bicycle. On occasions when I have a longer distance to cover but the weather is still nice, I hop on the motorcycle. When the weather is poor (like today it's snowing), I have a lot carry, or someone coming with me, I use my car.

The amount of fuel I purchase per year is dramatically less than before I got the bicycle. The extra cost for insurance is minimal but I recall that being different in America. At the end of it all I've saved a lot of money, fluctuating fuel prices don't bother me, I've lost weight, I'm in better shape, and I'm enjoying my life the way I've always wanted to.

Motorcycles might not be for everyone... but anyone serious about being frugal needs to seriously consider avoiding using a car as much as is practical for them and that means some other form of transit: Bicycles, Public transit,... even walking.

The way people are responding to you is like the existing method of allocating tax dollars had not created a largely invisible 2.2 Trillion dollar gap in Infrastructure Maintenance and Repair.

Your proposal is flawed to be sure... But no more so than the existing system.

After Stint of Frugality, Americans Opening Their Wallets Again by Havenin Frugal

[–]Bhima 1 point2 points ago

Besides being wrong, if it weren't it would still be disquieting news. There is still way, way too much debt that needs to be deleveraged and paid down. Furthermore Americans really need to move away from an economy based on consumption to one based on investment & efficiency.

The United States it's well along in its transformation into a Neo-Feudalist society with Theocratic and. Authoritarian tendencies. If that bothers anyone for any reason, they are going to have to abandon the status quo of rampant consumerism, self absorption, and ever rightward drifting politics.

Alberta Oilsands: They wanted to nuke them! by mrselfdestruct2in environment

[–]Bhima 1 point2 points ago

I've idly wondered why they did not build a pseudo portable nuclear plant to create the steam, power the equipment on site, and the waste water treatment facilities. sure, that's essentially converting nuclear power to oil... But I don't think it's more ridiculous than the rest of what they are doing and I think it would yield cleaner oil.

Obviously the best thing to do, is to leave this shit in the ground... But equally obviously they aren't going to do that.
