What the hell is austerity? by doublementhin SocialDemocracy

Yeah, I'm all for austerity measures when times are good.

How are we feeling about DC's idea for an "iconic" character coming out as gay? by hcdivadbin DCcomics

[–]BevansDesign 0 points1 point ago

I only care if the stories are enjoyable.

You know, there are plenty of characters that we've never seen engage in any kind of sexual situation. There could be lots of gay characters for all we know, and it just hasn't come up. Hell, maybe Darkseid is gay.

What the hell is austerity? by doublementhin SocialDemocracy

[–]BevansDesign 5 points6 points ago

Don't feel bad. I had to look it up just a few days ago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austerity

In economics, austerity refers to a policy of deficit-cutting by lowering spending often via a reduction in the amount of benefits and public services provided.[1] Austerity policies are often used by governments to try to reduce their deficit spending[2] and are sometimes coupled with increases in taxes to demonstrate long-term fiscal solvency to creditors.[3]

It's basically the idea that ensuring that the majority of a country's citizens has less money to spend will cause them to spend more money and help out the economy. In other words, it makes no fucking sense. But it's what most conservative parties have been advocating for decades.

Testing things like materials, bump maps, luminosity, reflection, etc. on a 3D object. It's somewhat useful when you're texturing 3D objects.

No matter what, this will always be my favorite Superman moment. by vivvavin comicbooks

Far as I know, he's gotten several power rings. Besides Darkest Knight, he also momentarily got a yellow ring, a white ring, and a black ring (although that technically wasn't him).

Online 3d virtual tabletop demo by theredballin rpg

[–]BevansDesign 5 points6 points ago

Very cool, but I can't help but wonder why there's a charge for it yet, when it's basically just a proof-of-concept demo with no way to alter anything. (Just reading from the description.)

Doesn't need much more to be useful though. A way to change the map, and a way to add more tokens/traps/etc. It looks great so far.

LPT - Use a can opener to open those endlessly-annoying blister packs and avoid cutting yourself. by alisebelcherin LifeProTips

[–]BevansDesign 0 points1 point ago

I had this problem last week at work. Found some new scissors in my desk drawer, and had to remove a packaging loop from the handle. I had a brief moment of considering how to warp the fabric of space to allow the scissors to cut themselves, and then noticed that I already had scissors in my pencil holder. Crisis averted!

Paid DLC: and how it's damaging public relations by Juggernogin pcgaming

[–]BevansDesign 1 point2 points ago

I'd love to know what the difference is between DLC and an Expansion Pack, because many people seem to act like they're different.

DLC shouldn't be used as a way to combat piracy and reselling games, but other than that, I don't see anything wrong with it. If the game itself is a solid value, there's no problem. If the DLC is a solid value, no problem.

Fox News has turned off the comment system for all stories except a few science topics. FN commenters were largely vitriolic, Obama-hating and liberal-hating. Is this change a good or bad thing? by pandaflavorin PoliticalDiscussion

[–]BevansDesign -2 points-1 points ago

Nah, they want their audience angry and hateful. That's one of their primary methods of getting votes for their party these days. But they know that their reputation is getting more and more damaged, so they want to keep their audience under a tarp so they can't be seen for what they are.

Think of this as Fox cleaning their blade.

I thought Red John's voice and accent sounded a lot like Garret Dillahunt. Just throwing that out there. He can play creepy pretty well. If it's not somebody who's been on the show already, he's a good choice.

How do you guys cope with job interviews? by twolittleducksin socialanxiety

[–]BevansDesign 1 point2 points ago

First, at the beginning of an interview it's helpful to let the interviewer know, flat-out, that you're really nervous in interviews. That'll set the social bar lower, and it actually does help to get the interviewer on your side earlier.

Oh, but before that...I really recommend getting on some prescription drugs. They can certainly help. But it's a crapshoot; some drugs won't help you, some may even hurt you, but hopefully you can eventually find one that'll work for you. It's a very long process, and it takes months for you to figure out if a drug is actually helping you at all. (You don't just pop a pill and feel an instant mood change.)

If you don't have insurance (like me) you'll just have to cough up $100 to see your doctor, and hopefully they'll help you avoid some office costs. For the drugs themselves, just about every major pharmacy has a program you can sign up for to knock the price way down (for me, it was about $200 down to $20). I know Walgreens and Target do.

Also, try a job placement or temp agency. I really recommend Robert Half if they have any offices in your area (they probably do). It helps to have a big group like that vouching for you, so when you get an interview, they already know you've got the skills.

Also, start doing breathing exercises. Seriously. Yes, it's technically also a yoga meditation exercise, but it's actually very helpful. Just ignore the mystical hippie bullshit if you encounter any.

Also, there's the more obvious stuff: get more exercise, eat healthy, wean yourself off of caffeine. And don't avoid social situations. I think of socialization as a muscle that needs to be constantly exercised, no matter how much we hate doing it. Your social skills won't get stronger if you don't force yourself to use them.

Wow, that was a lot of stuff.

New survey ranks Minneapolis as the #1 bike city in the US. Portland comes in second by cameronjin twincitiessocial

Don't worry, I was just writing that comment as if I was an H2 owner.

Here's a picture I took of my car yesterday.

Personally, I'm getting tired of picking hipster chunks and bike parts out of the grill of my H2.

(PS: It's a joke, people. This is called "satire".)

What hard truth does Reddit need to hear? by TheJungleVIPin AskReddit

[–]BevansDesign 0 points1 point ago

I've been thinking that it might help if Reddit split its voting into two categories instead of just one: "Worthy/Unworthy", and "Agree/Disagree". Right now, upvoting gets used to mark something "worthy" AND "agree", and downvoting for "unworthy" and "disagree". Just imagine how interesting posts with high "worthy" scores and high "disagree" scores would be.

I think that rule also applies to classic literature.

New designers: Please remember that this is /r/design_CRITIQUE, not /r/design_compliments by iDemonixin design_critiques

[–]BevansDesign 19 points20 points ago

Too many people equate criticism with insulting your work/opinions/whatever. I personally look at criticism as a great honor: someone cares enough about me to try to help me make my work better.

Also, being able to put aside your feelings about your work and look at it critically, as well as being able to gracefully take criticism to heart, is essential to a professional designer. If you can't take negativity, you have no business being a designer. The business world doesn't give a fuck about your feelings.

And a secondary question: are there any good podcast directories, with ratings and numbers of listeners and stuff? Besides iTunes? I can find plenty of crappy directories, but no good ones.
