Wage Slavery by MikeBodain Anarchism

[–]Arcitens 3 points4 points ago

It's not politically correct...

Gosh, it must be so hard being unable to speak the truth about how white people were also slaves because it's not PC.

Also, your explanation for why slaves in the US were predominately almost exclusively black is a complete load of crap. I mean, try starting with some really basic elementary school level history like, for instance, the Triangle Trade

And for the record, I don't disagree that wage-slavery is a form of slavery. I just think all the white people in this thread getting riled up over people pointing out that what happened to black people in the US is different is really stupid and, yes, racist.

Awesome. I love when everyone down votes the one person bringing historical perspective and a deep social critique to the table.

Err, which things didn't you say? I was responding to you saying

Anarchism isn't an endgame. It's barely even an ideology, to be honest.

and

Chomsky rarely expresses opinions; the vast supermajority of his political writing is analysis and/or observation.

scumbag reddit by gogobrentin Anarchism

[–]Arcitens 1 point2 points ago

Eh, I see what you're saying, but I disagree. This is the old debate/attempt at reconciliation that emerged in the 80s and 90s that basically said the Marxists will take care of ideology and strategy, the anarchists will take care of means and tactics.

Anarchism itself has its own ideology and its own program for how society ought to be organized. That started way back with Bakunin. And also look at things like Parecon today, which is definitely a program for organizing society but is against capitalism and state communism.

Also, saying someone "only" does analysis misses the point that whenever you analyze something you have your own opinions embedded in the analysis. Yes, Chomsky rarely uses the label anarchist, but his analysis is certainly anti-capitalist and anti-imperialist. So it is possible to deduce his opinions from his analysis. (And it's not that rare that he share his opinion.)

[For Hire] Intelligent 15 Year Old Looking For Any Job. by NicSoricein forhire

[–]Arcitens 1 point2 points ago

Yeah wait, how do the laws work here anyway? Is it legal for this 15 year old to work at all? I was thinking all the lawn mower stuff was done under the table so that's how everyone gets away with it. Or is the law just about not being full time?

Citigroup is now being sued by shareholders for excessive pay! Suit filed in Manhattan federal court accuses directors of breaching fiduciary duties by awarding more than $54 million compensation to executives. by AdamVR4in occupywallstreet

Except this doesn't actually address the structural problem of how banks work. We could avoid the problem of overpaid directors altogether by using credit unions instead. At most, even if this wins, it will result on a slap on the wrist after a lot of effort expended by activists and lawyers alike. Instead we should be directing our energy to building alternative institutions.

Free the Market, Abolish the Wage System by DerEinzigein Anarchism

[–]Arcitens 5 points6 points ago

These folks at c4ss have always interested me: reasoning seems well thought out, not an-caps, but pro-market. It's an interesting, under-represented perspective.

I am curious though how they reconcile not wanting to abridge "the freedom to contract wage employment" with the belief that "subordination and hierarchy [are] undesirable". Isn't wage labor always predicated on hierarchy and subordination? Can we have markets without wage labor?

Sorry if this had been posted before. Hadn't seen it pop up here though. Kind of a more artistic version of this.

Plus I like how in this image the pawns are police.

"Come fuck with me" - Jeff Monson, MMA Champion in police standoff. by fuckingidiotjunkyin Anarchism

[–]Arcitens 2 points3 points ago

yeah exactly. in that case i'd defer to people who feel that his presence would make the space unsafe. and i mean, even look at your phrasing in your original comment: "A bad breakup lead him to have a questionable background with domestic abuse." Why phrase it passively? If the guy abused someone say "He has a bad background with domestic abuse" - a bad breakup doesn't mitigate that fact at all.

Not to single you out. Just pointing out the way patriarchy can be insidious like that.

Yes, we just need to watch out for being too lax about that "he's not the same person he used to be" line and make sure that we really are holding people accountable for their behavior.

I don't know the story here, but it is of course legit to bar a known abuser from a community. That said, if he's open about his past, can own up to it and not get defensive, and can talk about male privilege and patriarchy then I think he should be allowed to give a talk.

Re-posting here because I think it's hugely important that all radicals start taking internet security seriously - especially when a group like Riseup goes out of their way to make it so easy for the rest of us.

Commencing long debate thread about anarchism and religion in 3...2.....

To summarize what will follow: some anarchists believe that religion is inherently hierarchical and acts as a tool of capitalism and the state. Other anarchists have been moved to anarchism by their religion for a number of possible reasons. After some people take very strong positions on this matter, someone will say something to the effect of "it doesn't matter what your religion is or how you got to anarchism as long as you're against capitalism and the state". This person will be viewed as the sane "reconciler" in the thread, even though the debate about religion was really interesting and both sides of the argument made very strong, valid points.
