Imagine there is a race of beings that far exceeds humans in intelligence. Would it be ethically right for them to use us for food as we use 'Lesser' animals for food? by Varo112in AskReddit

[–]ApolloBrowncoat 13 points14 points ago

  1. No. Given that there's been a healthy discussion surrounding the question (305 comments as of this writing), coupled with Varo112's admission that they eat meat, the suggestion that this is an argument falls flat.

  2. I've regrettably not read any of the recommended works, and cannot answer this appropriately.

  3. Both the premise of Varo112's question and that of Blade Runner question the bounds of humanity. Where Ridley Scott's film (and Phillip K. Dick's short story) frames the question in terms of humans vs. synthetic beings, Varo112 frames it in terms of an alien species and humanity. Furthermore, Blade Runner focuses on what it means to be alive, whereas Varo112 focuses on what it means to be part of a food chain.

  4. I do not share s3t1p's disdain, primarily because I believe the word 'hippy' (or 'hippie') has had its definition broadened to a point where it ceases to mean anything (see also: "indie", "hipster", "epic")

What Pavlovian response have you developed accidentally? by jonathansayreallenin AskReddit

I'm a New York Mets fan. Mentioning the year 2007 causes me to start cursing uncontrollably. Also, sometimes there are tears.

What is your guilty pleasure band? by keepingscorein AskReddit

I've liked Creed and Linkin Park since I was 12, and have stood by them in spite of the haters. More recently, I've been listening to Carly Rae Jepsen and "Call Me Maybe" at least 3 times every day.

What movie do you think would have been severely altered had one of the characters been casted as someone else other than the original choice? by JacksWastedTimein AskReddit

[–]ApolloBrowncoat 4 points5 points ago

X-Men. Dougray Scott was originally cast to play Wolverine; try to imagine anyone NOT named Hugh Jackman in that role. I dare you.

I am Joss Whedon - AMA. by IAMAJossWhedonin IAmA

Joss, I saw Cabin in the Woods last night at a press screening, and it was incredible. Kudos.

When writing the film, how hard was it to find the balance between paying homage to the old horror movies (Evil Dead, Friday the 13th) while still letting this film be its own thing?

What 'lower level' job did you actually enjoy? by ThereisNOmemein AskReddit

In college I worked at the library's circulation desk, usually on the late night shift (10pm - 2am). The work mostly consisted of checking books in/out for people, and routine checks to make sure no one was having sex in the stacks or setting the place on fire. Aside from that, I basically had 4 hours to myself in a quiet place. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

I got called a closed-minded bigot today by my boss because I told her I don't believe in astrology. What's the strangest way you've been insulted after something you've said? by SomanydynamoSin AskReddit

I once told a coworker I didn't support the death penalty, and somehow that meant that I was in support of child molestation.

That was the last time I tried to have a conversation about current events in my office.

Which fictional universe do you most want to live in? by HolyShazamin AskReddit

[–]ApolloBrowncoat 10 points11 points ago

My answer was, is, and always will be The Muppets.

Muppets are as real and common as humans. Almost everyone is happy and pleasant toward each other. The sad or mundane parts of our everyday lives are either bright and shiny or nonexistent. Sign me up.

Show your inner hipster! What did you like before it was cool? by TheMrHigsyin AskReddit

Harry Potter.

I got the first book for Christmas when I was in 5th grade. Read it with my mom over the spring and summer. By the time I started 6th grade everyone in all my classes was reading it.

My boyfriend responded to my crying by saying, "You know, tears don't stain but they might be corrosive. Building a crying robot would probably be a bad idea." What's the weirdest way someone's ever cheered you up? by mathbender99in AskReddit

[–]ApolloBrowncoat 1 point2 points ago

I headbutt and/or nuzzle my friends on an almost daily basis, and can confirm few things on this earth cheer people up as effectively.

Then again, my friends are also convinced I'm a puppy in a human suit, so there's that.

Said this once before in another thread, but I didn't see The Sixth Sense until well after the ending became common knowledge. Would love to be able to go into that movie cold.

What's your best *facepalm* worthy moment with a coworker? by politicaldanin AskReddit

I can't remember the context now, but woman I work with (mid-20s) kept using the word "necrophilia" when she meant "narcissism".

Hilarious and depressing all at once.
