How about "should there be a separation of church and state?" Uses a well known phrase. Or, "should the government give preferential treatment to religious people or organizations?"

I helped marry a couple in their backyard. Friends and family attended. There was a processional. They basically had a script for me with their vows that they had written. And, we finished with a reception in the house. It wasn't fancy but it was their ceremony.

What I hear them say is that God has a plan, people need to seek to understand it and follow it. Humans have free will so they have to choose to follow the plan. Praying to God helps them understand the plan.
