I think it's confirmed that Verzion plans to try to spearhead Windows Phone the way they pushed Droid, though probably not to the same extent.

I'm making a 'boxel'-based game and can attest to the extremely high RAM usage (especially if your blocks interact or are dynamic), but of course it should be reduced by an order of magnitude for a 2D game.

Most libraries should be fine. Custom shaders are the only real restriction I've met in developing for Windows Phone. RAM might be an issue, but if it's been ported to Android phones, it must also be a solvable one. I don't see why Terraria would be using any specialized APIs.

Unless this is just for Android tablets or something... I'm not entirely familiar with the different targeted platforms of Android. As a WP developer, I'm kind of used to things running on all possible hardware...

Not nearly at all-- 2% vs 61%. But it's dearly loved by those that have it and the source is already in XNA, which is the Windows Phone game framework. I don't know, I might try it myself assuming there's some unobfuscated source somewhere. Apparently they don't press legal charges?

Depending on the architectures, best-case scenario is that it's similar to writing for WP/Xbox/PC-- most of the code is the same, but you'll have occasional large #if XBOX #elif WINDOWS_PHONE #else #endif blocks with platform-specific code, workarounds, or even whole methods and classes.

I think we could deal with that. Of course, if the underpinnings are fundamentally different then this isn't possible. But since it's all WinRT, they shouldn't be, right?

Why not Windows Phone, then... would probably take less than a week. Just retool the interface and it'll already compile and deploy, assuming they don't use custom shaders.

I find it easier to click twice and then do something else while I wait than juggle cmd and control panel, but I'm not much of a cmd guy to begin with (I'd rather click than type). It's whatever you like.

My router sucks (don't buy cheap Rosewill), and my university's ISP is a little finnicky. Generally it happens once a day, and still would if I didn't abandon the crappy router and switch to ethernet into the wall.

I do this on Kharg TDM too, since teammates always have a spawn beacon to get on the roof.

Screw the roof, I rack up 10 kills a life by dropping C4 as I glide behind the enemy, then propping up a bipod and killing anything that moves.

Firstly: let me freely admit that my comment about "anyone ragging on Windows Troubleshooter" was hyperbole and I don't deny that it's imperfect, only that it sucks.

On your question: I get all my drivers from Windows Update except for first-time network driver install (obviously) and Nvidia display drivers, for which I prefer to get the betas. I've only ever had one driver failure which was notable, where the display adapter threw a blue screen. Upon OS recovery, Windows Troubleshooter offered to check for problems, and upon completion directed me to Nvidia's website for the latest patch. This has happened even with software, like game patches, although with software I rarely use the troubleshooter in favor of Google.

Microsoft's growing data collected from those people who actually send error reports to Microsoft has vastly improved the Troubleshooter over the years. All but the most recent errors seem to have at least one suggested solution.

Every time my network connection is acting up, where I used to run ipconfig -release / -renew, I just right-click and Troubleshoot now. It runs all the options and fixes it every time. Anyone ragging on the Windows Troubleshooter is either impatient, unwilling to go past Step 1, or last used it in XP/'95.

I might be interested. Do you have access and rights to the existing codebase, or would you want to start from scratch (might want to anyway)? Can you give me a bit more info on the concept, other than TD? Feel free to message if you like.

I'm a game developer with a lot of XNA experience, but I don't actually have my device yet. It should arrive within a few weeks, but in the meantime I've already coded 2 apps with the emulator and find it to be serviceable. Oh, and I'll never leave for iOS.

Of course I'm also flat broke, so if you're looking for a salary or even a payment... I'm afraid I can't help you there. Cuts of any revenue are a-ok, or just for fun as I prefer.

Are you talking about this trick? I didn't think it needed all those credentials. Of course, having to piece together multiple emails to get your photo is not user-friendly at all! Imgur is a good solution.

My 'full desktop browser' uses webkit and I haven't seen any downsides whatsoever. It's just faster. I used Firefox for years before switching to Chrome, I don't see any difference except that Firefox was slower but had more add-ins (which obviously aren't available on the 'full desktop browser' of WP7).

Honestly I think it's a little silly how much OEMs put into software. Like Android UI skins and usually gaudy simple 'select' apps.

If I get a WP7 phone, I'm going to expect a) good software and OS from the software company (MS) and b) good hardware from the OEM. I am not looking for good software (and wouldn't expect to find it) from the OEM. Granted the converse is not really true-- Pretty much every one of Microsoft's hardware ventures have been spectacular, except perhaps 1st-gen 360s.
